Yeah, what is it about men and sport, I just don't get it ? Why is it I hear so much that all men want to do is sit down with a six pack and watch sport on the tv ? Is this what the stereotype of a male is ? I just find it difficult to understand what is so appealing about watching sport, I never have. To me, watching sport is akin to watching paint dry. Oh, I have tried to find the interest, but I have found there are more things more enjoyable in life than watching people boot around a bag of air, whack a feathered thing over a net or any other variation on a competition between people that the tv broadcasters seem to be fanatical on reporting on every movement someone does as if every movement including scratching their ass is a super honed skill of the gods of sport. Go on, why is it that men and sport are synomynous ?

I don't like watching sports, and I never have. The only "sports" I engage in are bowling, billiards, fishing, and target shooting. Of course I wouldn't call those sports. I do like going to horse races....is that a sport? [:D] I think most men are encouraged to enjoy sports as youngsters. I got signed up for Little League, youth soccer, basketball, football, and a youth bowling league. My father used to drag me along with him to the golf course. The only one of those activities that I enjoyed was bowling, and I still do it. I just didn't care for the rest of it. I didn't like the structure and the rules. I was always content to be by myself and left to my own devices. I didn't enjoy organized activities. Luckily for me, my parents weren't sports fanatics. I think they were just trying to give me something to do and trying to help me make friends.

Mostly it's the testosterone. I don't care for sports either. I've mentioned on other threads that I don't much care for NASCAR, the NFL, baseball or basketball. About the most sport I've watched in over a year was the women's olympic volleyball yesterday. (and that was for entirely different reasons) I consider the time, money and effort expended on sports in this country to be a total waste. Those billions of dollars could be used much better elsewhere. Now, if they ever had an official sex olympics, I think I might just become a fan...

Well, to be fair, I have some women friends who are not quite normal when it comes to some team or another.....but when I moved down south I was utterly amazed at the reverence with which college football was treated. I was more accustomed to the northern-style professional football or basketball team sports nutjob....but they have nothing on the southerners I knew who were into college football. I once spent an excuriating 3 hours on a bus with clients who, as boosters, were trying to position their team for a bowl game. I kid you not, they had some of them scouted high schools students personally...and that was the least of the mania. I pretended I had fallen asleep and just prayed I'd get through the whole ride wihtout losing my job for shouting 'what bullshit!' at the passengers. candystripper

Watching a sport event is appealing to me for two reasons: The outcome is unknown I can "bet" on the outcome That being said, I rarely sit and watch an entire game from start to finish.

I love to watch sports, and play them (fairly well), also. It can be a source of joy, watching someone perform at a high level at something one finds of value.

Candy, me too! Unless I went to a particular college or university who cares which team wins? "Who do you think's going to win the Harvard-Yale game?" "Who fucking cares?" "I didn't go to Harvard or Yale, I went to a small business school in New England."

But I think you're wrong on that bipolar. Collegiate sports make a lot of money for the colleges, and that money goes back into the school for other things. Also considering the obesity rates in this country; I wouldn't call the time, money, and effort a waste. If anything, we aren't active enough and we don't encourage physical activity enough with youth.

My goodness... [&:] when I moved some years back from New England (go BoSox) to Texas I was surprised at all the support I saw in sports (I had never observed that while growing up) and quickly got caught up in cheering along w/ everyone [:D][:D][:D] When I moved from TX to AL... well I never ever saw so much interest and support in college football in my life. WOW! It was definitely eye opening to say the least. Auburn or Alabama, hmmm... decisions, decisions (PS this was back in the mid to late 70's [;)])

My man doesn't watch sports. I'm an anti sportist myself as well. Tis one of a million reasons that I love him so much. We'd rather stick a good porno in the player...

I'm not a guy but I enjoy watching professional football. It's an important part of Sundays in the fall/winter for me. To the degree that I don't think I could have fun with a guy who didn't watch football. In my family we often plan our Sunday around what time the Steelers are playing.

My friend and I were inspired by watching the Olympics the other night, and we got out there and sweat and had a lot of fun. Sport isn't just for those already in shape! As for watching sport ... I don't like it when it becomes an obsession, but I do enjoy it myself, especially playoff games where something is really at stake or when two teams are in a very competitive, heated battle.
