BDSM Literature

Do you read it ? What is there a market for ?
What would would make you buy it ? [8|]

siamsa24 -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 7:35:57 AM)

I have never really read BDSM literature, although there are some great books (at least, that's what I've heard) and I have flipped through Srew the Roses, Send me the Thorns and found it interesting. I always thought that it was silly to just read about it.......

By the way, are you just trying to boost your numbers? You are just posting on pretty much every thread and not really contributing anything.........

IronBear -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 7:52:23 AM)

Do you read it ?

Yes :
The Loving Dominant (It was recommended by a number of people in CM and I've talked to the author (well who hasn't?) on CM)
The Gor Series (Logical isn't it?)
Miscelaneous "Black Lace" publications.
Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns (Om my wish list)

I've forgotten the rest but I have them listed in my diary.

What is there a market for ?

I haven'e a clue. [;)] I haven't done a market surbey or accessed one.

What would would make you buy it ?

Three reasons:

i). For Professional Education

ii). For Lifestyle Education

iii). For my kinky pleasure.

Not entirely sure if you mean literature as in books that can be tools of learning on different aspects/avenues of it, or if you mean any with a bdsm theme, but here's my 2 cents for what it's worth.

I have the Beauty trilogy, and several erotica books with that theme. I like reading books like that, enjoy them. I also plan to get some like Screw the Roses, Give me the Thorns, etc. because I want to learn more about different aspects of D/s, bdsm.

It's two-fold on what would/does make me buy it. One being an interest in that type of literature, the other being a need to learn.

Hope this made sense....sigh...haven't had my coffee yet.

I would read it for professional reasons, I didn't really think about that. So I would be looking for something a little more academically oriented then some of the books out there.
I did have a book about the areas of Human Sexuality (I don't remeber the exact name or who wrote it, but I will try to dig it up, it's been years) that was great. I would love a book that went into detail about various aspects of BDSM and how it relates to human sexuality as a whole.
Why some people find the need for BDSM and others don't (and even find it extremely unappealing)
Why is it that some people explore all fetishes, while others are satisfied with just one or two.

Things like that

greetings ,evil biatch,
thot you'd never ask....
personally: i always go ,for the mag bizaar
its available everywhere
mainstream glossy
next to high society mag
i don't particularly like leg or leg world or anything close to it because ,they copy each, other ,and, the name, of the mag. is like 20 different kinds ,of generic cornflakes
and ,there are, too many immitators.
i'd look ,at vogue cause all ,of the classic ;philosophy of science- variables are there ,for the" look", of the perfect slave(anyone can at least try) ,and, the real tops have, that attitude reakin'!
i can't tell you what i've read ;i'm more visual ,with my own imagination vs someone elses' light stuff spanking,or off the wall ;off the target focus,at least ,not, since ,sandy, and, her husband have owned ,and, set up the newspaper corporal...i've seen their cutting room floor ,and ,i was blown away ,by their sexy; oh my gaud; real bathroom; hit the spot-literature ....,now, i don't even know, if they are ,around, since: they split ,or something back ,in 90's ,or something...."hostile-takeovers" ,of a lot ,of businesses ,and, if it's, not actual pistols, and, guns ;it's doubles;double-trouble,in bed ,and ,girls(one way ,or ,another sabotage,or force- takeovers ); i don't know their case; i had my own major concerns same time...sometimes: guys like the defunct drummer (a NYNYforum size; pocket soft-cover bk.)had more hot ,and ,sexy writing ,cause, it was ,to the core, but ,they are ,out ,of bussiness,and,books comming ,out last-decade are long ,and ,boring ,and, not real-life, just romance ,and, i see screw newspaper has some brief; spicy; s ,and ,m writing ,on the ,open mind side, but ,other, than ,off the top my head; i don't know the "demand", or resources.only rare timeless ;'reference books' i know are: in gay-books ,if there is such a difference ,in s/m/b/d/cirles) called: s ,and, m manual vol. 1 ,and, 2, ....,that's, for your REFERENCE - library COLLECTION ,or ,for sparking the interests.i stick, to eden press ,or 'military' presses(brigade,catalog- books) where i can get books ,on "how to", or "fact-manuals" ,of brainwashing techniques,in russia .it speels ,out the facts, that are a cream, about, interrogation ,and, control.
make a mag. ,with a well-known ;full layout-centerfold ,in the ,underground world ,of sm ,of a famous ,or infamous dom. or 'top' ,in some provocative mix ,of vanilla, and, sm leather ,in glossy; color; full facial ,and ,body -semi back, and, front nonchallant POSES/ closeups ,and, you got me dreamin'!....
ONCE: (ONE TIME!) I SAW A GOOD SLAVE-DOM picture! i'd frame ,on MY,wall!!, inside cover ,of hollywood lifemag. november /december((AMANDA PEET . THE MOST LIST) 2005; issue- see:THE INSIDE COVER pic. labled: BCBGMAXAZRIA,....makes a true slaves' heart pump wild ,and,go ,on panting, for the life, plus: i ,only buy it, for the ocassional image gadgets ,and ,toys ,that i might find like: a fantastic $ 250.00 twisted metal; elctro-bycicle, (,so, if you walk ,on the beach.... ;you won't be alone ,for long,and, soon attract the vain; arrogant; top ;you die, for....),or something ...the rest ,of this thin mag.is lies ,and, P.R./ b.s..
the last page ,each issue has:"x and y" files,which are fun ,for playing ,on expensive computers;altering faces, to get an illegal third....
remember: there's always a smart top somewhere,that has a mag., for sorry exploitation ,by the next-wannabe M star.

Evilbiatch -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 8:09:20 AM)

Yes, I was meaning more erotica rather than instructional or how-to-be-a-better--XX-in-28-days type thing--sorry should have made that clear. Why I ask is that our community is thinking of putting together a collection of erotica with a strong BDSM with a handful of overseas contributors by invitation. We are lucky here in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, in that we have the smartest, richest constituency in the country and many in the scene are scholars, writers, etc and so writing "grassroots" copy should not be a problem. [8|]

What is envisaged is a kind of BDSM version of the Rowan Pelling edited _Erotic Review_ (UK) which was a collection of short stories, vignettes and anecdotes by a variety of authors, writers and practitioners, with drawings, cartoons and some artistic photographs. It is described as literary smut, or erotica for pretentious bastards. We think the brain should be stimulated so we are aiming at a highly-educated, highly literate demographic. [8D]

I was curious about the questions I posed for another reason too. Many people like 'doing" things and just loathe reading about them.

Thanks to all thus far for posts. It is a shame I cannot edit the original post. [:o]

I put reading BDSM stories in the same catagory as cybering. Rather boring and kind of a waste of my time. I love to read for a sake of learning or because I enjoy the author, but not to be turned on. I have my partner for that [;)]

Of course, this is just my opinion.

Evilbiatch -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 8:13:32 AM)

would you be able to write an accessible article on human toiletry ? [X(]

Is that because the stories are poorly written, cliched or because you'd rather do instead of read.

siamsa24 -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 8:17:37 AM)

Most are just cliched and I would rather do then read.
I love reading, don't get me wrong, I could read Harry Potter all day long, but I read it because I love the story, not to learn anything or to get ideas.

Evilbiatch -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 8:23:03 AM)

Our Philosophy is that the stories should be covertly instructional but that most of the emphasis should be on entertaining the reader and expanding the mind. Even mundane things, creatively written, can be brought to life. I recommend the Erotic Review to you if you can get a hold of a copy. The humourous tales were absolutely side-splitting and they had a pool of established writer such as Kingsley Amis, etc. We might approach Vanilla writers here who might want to let themselves go a bit in print...

In my opinion if you use vanilla authors you will get very stereotyped work.

The best BDSM literature (by this I mean fiction) I have read is written by folks who do BDSM. Some of the below I know are BDSMers (or SMers or what have you), some just write so well, I suspect they may be.

Here's a small list:
Antoniou, Laura
Antrews, Grant
Califia, Pat/Patrick
TammyJo Eckhart (this is me, though, so I'm fully disclosing)
Green, Sharon
John Preston
Luc Milne
Tan, Cecilia
Thomas S. Roche
Townsend, Larry
Travis, Aaron
John Warren
Winslow, Don

Some of them write romantic stuff, some very hard, some mysteries, some raunch, some gay, some lesbian, some bi, and some straight.

They appear in their own books, in anthologies, in magazines, but rarely online -- why? they do have to make a living somehow, folks, so they can pay the bills and still have time to write.

truesub4u -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 9:10:15 AM)

Greetings Evilbiatch,

i have often wondered about the same thing. Back in 2000 i was asked to prove i was capable of showing i can have a vivid imagination by a Dom from yahoo. And was instructed to write him a short story. after doing so he forwarded to a publisher friend of his and i was contacted and asked if i could turn my short story into a novel. a rare request at best. but after thinking about it. i figured why the hell not. had nothing better going on at the time. before i knew it.. i had 17 chapters done for this novel. i have to tell you.. i found it very erotic. while writing it, i allowed my mind to wonder past where i knew my limits where at that time. and i found my new limits wanting to be reached. and was able to open up more to my them "protector" to help me explore them. so that hopefully when the right Dom found me, i knew i would be able to go where he wanted without hesitation.

So i think some of the litature out there can be fun... and a learning tool for some. after my book got published i got a quite a few e-mails from Doms and subs alike thanking me for various reasons. from the erotic reading (being able to draw one into the book as if there were actually there) to fueling some fire in some subs to make them want to try to reach new places in their limits also.

i'm now working on my 3rd novel.. and i do it not for profit (though it helps) i do it for pleasure. i think more should try it. some might even find out that they have more to explore in them selves if they ever thought about it.

jessica

Evilbiatch -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 9:12:39 AM)

Hi jessica

thanks for that--great post. So would you contribute to an anthology ? What types of short stories do you write...and while you are at....think about participating in my poll [sm=lol.gif]

cheers

truesub4u -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 9:35:23 AM)

lol... they're not short stories... that was only the first order.. but sure, nothing going on with me right now and would be glad to give me a holler and i'll holler back...

Phoenxx -> RE: xx**BDSM literature**xx (11/20/2005 9:37:53 AM)

Laurell K. Hamiton writes two series that have strong BDSM under-themes. Although in the last couple in the Anita Blake series, BDSM and poly is almost replacing the story.
fawn, my wife/sub loves erotic literature. I find most of it a bit boring, like the porn from the 70’s. It focuses only on the sex and not on any plot. It's cheaper to buy Penthouse Forum.
