I am a huge Law and Order fan....I find it some of the best writing on television.  However, another coup the series has achieved over the years is great casting for episodic characters.

Among the actors chosen for roles on the show are two I have admired all their careers and not seen often of late.

One is Kathleen Turner, a star of the 1981 film 'Body Heat' which combined extraordinary casting and writing to generate one of the most devious and sexiest films of the decade.  If you have not seen it, you should.  In the film, Kathleen Turner's perfect body is almost a separate charater in itself....and yet in recent years, she has been striken by rhematoid arthritus.  The perfect body is no longer, though she will always be beautiful, but her ability to act is undiminished and she has turned in absolutely flawless performances on the show.

Another actress chosen for episodic roles whom I admire is Lynda Carter.  As 'Wonder Woman', an early '70's television show, her 38-20-37 figure was amazing to everyone, even kids.  Her 'credits' include gracefully standing beside her husband as he was tried and found not guilty of banking fraud, and entering a rehab clinic for alcoholism after holding a press conference to give support to others in need to seek help.  I have always been struck b the fact that she has acted with integrity and abplomb and never, in my opinion, capitalised on her appearance in a way that dengegrated women.  Her appearances on Law and Order, in the role of villian, were as compelling as Kathleen Turner's.

I applaud the show's producers for thinking outside the box and using older female actresses to the advantage of the series.

Jeremy Sisto was a great pickup, but I'm not very excited about Kevin Bernard. Bumping McCoy up to DA and bringing in a new prosecutor, Linua Roache, helped reinvigorate L&O which had gone stale the past few seasons.

Cloudboy I guess I am not sure who you mean because I so rarely watch 'network' television.  One frustration I have with the damned cable company is that because there are so many in the catchment area of the local paper, there is no 'tv guide' in the old fashioned sense.  I cannot find out what's playing on channel 3 at 8pm on Wednesdays.  It's been worse since 'Criminal Minds' came out, because I am a Manny Patakin nutter...and I can never seem to track down the show.  I guess someday, if my ship comes in, I can always buy a DVD player and a DVD of the first season...but still...I hate cable tv.

Love law and order, the shows format really lends itself to a long-running series. Not surprisingly alot of my favorite shows follow a similar format. House, The Dresden Files, etc.

Also Kathleen Turner has always been and will always be awesome. First thing I think I ever saw her in was Serial Mom, either that or War of the Roses. But that was forever ago. Though I did see Who Framed Roger Rabbit a bit before either, I wasn't aware at the time who she was, or that she had voiced Jessica Rabbit. Though her voice has always been sexy as hell.

I always chalked up Law and Order's success with that opening woosh thunk sound...

Law & Order, with all the various spin-off series are high on my list of brain candy.  I just adore Mariska Hargitay as Detective Olivia Benson.

So check the tv guide online then.

Laffs...yes I know about the site....it's still not what I need and want.  I want the old fashioned little book that came out weekly that told me what NUMBER channel was playing what show at which time.

Instead I'm supposed to memorise what all the various station numbers are?

It's not at all helpful to tell me that the show's on CBS or NBC...I need to know whether it's on channel 3 or channel 6.

Anything else is akin to telling me to 'go north'; since I can't fly I have no clue how to go 'up', lol.

Well the local newspaper also has this information for you.
As well as there is a tv guide on your tv...call the company and ask what channel it is on.

Hate to break the news to you but Mandy Patakin flaked out on "Criminal Minds" much like he did Chicago Hope years ago....It would seem he has a phobia of some sort for sucessful  series work

Well sh*t.

Do you mean he left the show?  Cuz if he's just doing a crappy job of acting...well..he's still major drool material.  Gawd, I even loved watching him just walk down a set of stairs, bilthering about some Rx drug in a commercial.

I can't watch those kind of shows, if it wearn't for dumb people talking to the cops there wouldn't be a series like that.
Same with "The First 48" a real life cop show where these dumb idiots talk themselves into jail!
All they have to say is; "I don't want you to ask me any questions and I don't want to answer any questions and I want my lawyer."

UncleNasty -> RE: One Reason I Love Law and Order (8/15/2008 10:56:58 AM)

Right on popeye.

One of the worst things is that people believe what happens on these shows is how the law actually is, and is a legitimate indication of the powers of police, prosecutors, etc. There was a fellow on Law and Order several years ago was always using the line when he met resisitance from an unknowledgable character "Oh, its OK. We're authorized." Turned my stomach every time.
