My sense of wonder.
My imagination.
My desires.

kiwisub12 -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 4:23:13 PM)

my definition of myself is based on internal qualities.  Things like being a mother or a sub/slave could change anytime, so are really ephemaril. And really , i try not to define myself too much, because to me defining is one way of pigeon holing something.  To define something is to bind it against change, to exclude new experiences and values. I consider myself a work in progress -  just getting better and better. [:D]

masamichi -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 4:31:41 PM)

i live as a river. for in every since we are not really bound by anything but our own minds. i am many things and nothing. while i live to serve and in serving i live that is not all of me.

sooo
find peace without putting a label on it or making it complicated.

stella41b -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 6:44:31 PM)

Wow! So many interesting and thought-provoking responses, I don't even know where to begin here. In thinking about this a little further I guess it's true that there are many things which define us depending on your perspectives. Really, this is a goldmine of responses, so I'm going to have to keep this general.

I'm trying to get away from the labels and the various roles that we fulfill in our lives, employee, employer, parent, sister, brother, submissive, dominant, and so on, as I feel that's perhaps just a part of who we are.

If we were to take the statement 'I am me, I am X, X is me' and this is our own (perceived) intrinsic value, i.e. that what makes us different from everyone else.. No, maybe value isn't a good word here, perhaps quality or essence, yes, essence, where does the identity of that essence come from? Does it come from other people? From our experiences? Or does it come from somewhere deep within ourselves?

And if it comes from deep within ourselves, how much of it is influenced by other people in our lives and how much by our own experiences?

Prinsexx, I appreciate the complement, but trust me. I'm just a man trying to find his way through the world. I've done lots of things I'm not proud of, hurt people that I never should have.
Every day, I try to be a better person ... and I fall short.
I think the secret is in the trying.

Take care hon

I agree with Prinsexx...You ARE an amazing, caring, truly one of a kind man.

Kana -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 7:15:47 PM)

If I am to be defined let it be done by the actions I have taken
The actions are rooted in thought which stems from feeling
Yet I am a dualist
I believe that there is something more than just the flesh
there is spirit to, the intangible
That helps create and mold who we are
If I am to be defined in the end
Then let me be measured by my capacity to love.

Just my thoughts.
Why the constant search to need, to know?
There is an American fascination with labels.
It is as if we possess this idiosynchratic need to define everything
As if once we have
we can find its proper place
We like things neat, orderly
Life seldom is
Try this on for size...
The second I define something I have limited it
I am not defined by anything external
it is the internal that matters
but in the end
I am a human being
not a human definition
I think I will go about the business of being
And let others worry about defining.

In the words of Thoreau:
My life has been the poem I would have writ,
but I could not both live and utter it.

God and Covey.....faith and principles.

TemptingNviceSub -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 8:13:09 PM)

What defines me?..Ever striving for the ultimate balance...As I grow older...the defintion blurs...it changes ..it flows...and it can also stagnate at times...What defines me?...I really have no clear answer for that...Tempting

Feeling death ever at my side-a dear old companion who will claim all of my moments one day. As it has, many I have known.

SimplyMichael -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 8:32:59 PM)

I thought the OP was a rather wonderful question, I have drafted a couple of responses but didn't like any of them.  I think that was because they were wrong and all external.  I think what I most value and think defines me is my ability to change and grow.

UR2Badored -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 8:45:02 PM)

FR~  Happiness at no else's expense.
Giggling out of context--in my goofy way
I think laughing and smiling is my favorite thing.
I am ever evolving into a new person every three years. Today I would not even hang out with the person I was 20 years ago.  Oh she wasnt so bad, but not appreciative of the little things and she didnt stand up for herself as much.

jim64 -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/12/2008 10:13:30 PM)

My honesty, integrity, compassion, and knowing each day could be my last. I am far from perfect in these respects. Yet, that is how I define who I should be. My lack of perfection would create horribly low self esteem, if not for my very dark sense of humor.

You do realize you can prbably keep this thread going forever... oh never did you come across such a group of people who LOVE to talk about themselves as we are.. We could tell you som stories! Whew!  Yeah.  We're a goldmine[;)]

Jeeze, lady, you have to know what a tough nut this is going to be to crack.  It is not as if anyone is going to deny that the our environment affects who we are.  Are we to define ourselves as a living dialectic then?  An essence acted upon by an environment and synthesizing a new essence that is a product of the mix (can't properly even be called an essence then can it?)?  Do we try to distill the original essence and call that the 'x' in your equation?  I could say I am what has become of a mated pair of zygotes.  That would be true from one perspective.  It seems sort of fatalistic though.  I do believe in fate... Fate is the inertia of the universe.  You can't fight it.  Thinking you can is hubris worthy of a tragic hero.  You have to adapt to it.  To call myself adaptability is far to wide open as well though.  I might as well say I am surviving... same thing.  Do I define myself by how I am influenced?  I know enough about psychology to be able to say I do not know exactly how much of my 'will' is the result of factors that have been acting on my during my whole life and how much is 'self.'  Yes there is room to swim around a bit in the stream of fate.  I can impose my will to some extent and influence my surroundings (even reduced to helplessness in the face of fate, forced to simply witness what is done to you and around you, you have influence, as any scientist can tell you, simply observing has an influence... I have wondered if this may be the purpose of our existance in the universe, actually) , so do I define myself by my influence?  Style perhaps?  Am I ID, Ego or super-ego?  A triumvirate, maybe?  An alchemical process?  Do we start out Tabula Rasa? Well obviously not we know enough now about genetics to know we start out life with some pretty complex genetic script on our respective surfaces.  So is that what we are?  SO many choices...

You seem to have a specific kind of answer in mind Stella.  Could you be more specific about the P.O.V.?

Now that's profound but i must admit to having tipped the centre point in my life-cycle and realising the end is nearer than the beginning was farer away. Make sense? I don't have any fear of death whatsoever though so it's not anywhere near what motivates me to want to stay alive or feel alive.
yes so many i knew have passed....ravaged by drugs, disease or just rock and roll or ravaged by self-doubt and anguish.

Michael: just let it all hang out man....what's expressed is nearly always repressed anyways.....IMHO

HeidiAnn -> RE: What is it that defines you? (8/13/2008 2:41:44 AM)

i feel it is impossible to determine what defines me while i'm still so caught up in all this life-stuff.

i have so much i wish accomplish in this life, that it gets overwhelming at times. Time will tell if i can make choices and focus my ambitions on really accomplishing something, or if my life will end up in a chaotic mess where everything is at best half - done. Maybe that struggle defines me the most?
