TNstepsout -> Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 5:05:29 AM)

Anyone else out there really hate the stage in meeting someone online and it's time to take it to the phone? For some reason I get the most awful knot in my stomach and feeling of dread imaginable. I just hate this stage. Honestly I'd rather just jump straight from email and chat to a first meet than have that horrible phone moment to deal with.  What could it possibly be about a stupid phone that conjures up such anxiety. I don't get it.

Anyone else out there? Or am I the only phone-a-phobe on the planet?

BrokenSaint -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 5:09:32 AM)

I used to be pretty bad about being on the phone. I still somewhat am. Though I tend to warm up to conversation immediately after a few minutes. I suppose all that time being on the phone for work really improved my disposition towards it. I'm still kind of bad with calling people regularly, or picking up my phone. I generally prefer for people to just IM me, as it's much faster, as chances are I'm either at work and on messenger programs, or home and on messenger programs. If I happen to be out, it's just like leaving a message, and I don't have to deal with 10 telemarketer hangup messages before I get to something important. I also can see who it is right away, and I don't have to go searching for where I left the phone last :P

Yea, I generally meet in public first, with a phone number all they have to do is look up a reverse listing book (number/address) and they have my home address.

I generally always meet at either a local munch, or someplace for coffee before I hand out my phone number.

But then, I get all the nuts who send me their phone number demanding I call and start serving them.  These I just post on local bathroom walls

Lynnxz -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 5:16:49 AM)

Haha, I am horrible on the phone- I usually come off as being bitchy... when in reality I'm just uncomforable on the phone.

DominaYork -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 7:15:25 AM)

I would much rather do a face to face meeting than a phone meeting. I really am not fond of phone conversations with people I haven't met, and most days with people I have met too!  housesub have you considered using a cell? They just show up as 'mobile phone from whatever region' not a home address.

Bethnai -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 7:47:27 AM)

It takes a minute to get to the phone. I do it after a bit and if I am interested its the icing on the cake as far as interest. It scares me to do it but my curiosity over rides it. That voice drops and it adds something.

simpleplan2 -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 7:50:15 AM)

I'm not much for the phone either.  I used to think it was because I am on the phone so much for work, but that's not it.  It's those long uncomfortable silences...I HATE those!  I will say, tho, if someone can make me feel comfortable on the phone, there's a good chance that a face to face will go well.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 7:53:05 AM)

I have a cell phone and limited minutes. I am subject to bad reception becasue of my phone. I do not like going to the phone unless it is to finalize face to face plans. I am not a phone person at all, though. The boys are, and I talk to them and to my mom, but thats the extent of it. Anything else is almost exclusively shot conversations verifying meeting plans or professional.

TwoNYCDommes -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 8:08:21 AM)

I hate the phone, in almost all circumstances (though some times are worse than others).  Fortunately, my darling is somewhat more tolerant of it.

pahunkboy -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 8:13:38 AM)

if someone wont disclose a phone number- then they are not serious about meeting.

early on- I freely gave out my phone number. I even had the phone company add "distantive ring" which is a special ring- a diff phone number goes to it.

these days I dont give out my number quite as easily.

some guys will call ..be jagging off then CLICK.  no "I shot, thanks bye"

nothing just "CLICK".

meeting in person doesnt always work out- some it seems misdescribe what they are wearing so that they can see what you look like before you can see what they look like.

2 words ruined a date that I thought was a sure thing.  "you better".   [im reply to Ill call you later]

the cyber world is not the real world.    you can put "no games, must be real" all you want onto the net- when someone does that- I conclude the game playing on the poster is experienced.   must be real. a picture of a hamburger online doesnt substitute for lunch.

oh- if I were female...I would not meet men online.  it is too dangerous.

lighthearted -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 8:18:23 AM)

oh goodness, yes!  actually, my preferred method was to have them leave a voice mail so I could at least get accustomed to the sound of their voice, and then I could talk to them on the phone.  that jump from email to real life was terrifying

lalbobbilynn -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 8:38:54 AM)

i do not mind the phone so much. For me it is still quite limited, similar to the net. Actually i prefer the phone, b/c one can infer my tone, and actually "hear" that i am being playfully humorous instead of just plain bitchy, as most my emails come off as. Dry, dark humor does not come off well in emails!
Never the matter, meeting one in person makes me so nervous i could piddle!

i wuvs the fone...ya can have lots of hot converts....right GT?? [8|]

KatyLied -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 8:53:55 AM)

My worries regarding the phone tend to center around:  what if I don't like his voice, or the conversation will lag with uncomfortable silences, or that he's looking for a phone sex get-me-off sort of thing.  Once a relationship is established I do enjoy phone calls, but not constantly, although it is fun to get the unexpected "hi, I was thinking about you, how's your day going?"

Bethnai -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 9:42:46 AM)

See, my worries are.....will I like the sound of his voice?  Its a lot about the voice.  It is what I will here in my head. Too, I'm legally blind (it doesn't take much to be there, lots of people are, a dime a dozen) but over time, I think that there is an ability to decipher people through sound.

To be honest, I haven't spoken with anyone that I think is whacking off. I could be wrong. I am afraid of those moments of silence, but its better to find it here then in public when there is the added plus of strange body language.

I am afraid of my phone but its because soliciters will show up as cell phone numbers and you have to listen to there schpiel to eradicate yourself.

popeye1250 -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 9:58:16 AM)

I don't like phones because I'm just not a "phone person."
I don't have one of those portable phones that everyone else has walking around talking to themselves.

I haven't a clue what I'd do without a cell phone. [:D]

Lockit -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 10:11:59 AM)

By the time someone gets my phone number, I don't care if they have my address.  I have no problem on the phone, love all the features and can control just about anything I want to in the whole process.  I also have features at home that I can control in case I get a lil visitor I didn't want or doing something odd.

What do you think it is that you all don't like about being on a phone?  I get the in person meets..lol.. but just wondering what it is about the phone that gets to you.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Phone-phobic UGH! (8/13/2008 12:12:07 PM)

I despise the phone-meeting thing. We -do- go right from the online introduction to a meeting in a public place. I actually don't even give -out- my phone number until I decide that I at least like the person...in person -- I've had way to many "discards" who call me for weeks on end, several times a day, trying to get me to change my mind and give them "one more chance" -- or just plain forgetting that I said that I didn't think we were compatible and that I wished them luck elsewhere.

Yeah, despite my phone-phobia expressed earlier, we do tend to interpret unwillingness to provide a phone number as a red flag that someone is unlikely to ever actually meet in person.
