Are you now suggesting that the US hasn't attempted to do anything for any of those?  I suppose the same question could be asked of every nation, eh?

Not every nation invaded Iraq and America didn't invest in a 3 billion dollar war for them either but then they are not sitting on any vital resources.

How much oil has the US gotten for that "investment'?  Oh and I would check your facts about how much the US has spent on Iraq, and those other countries, the ammount is much higher.

How is the Netherlands going to react when Russia decides that Ukraine is antagonizing it by joining NATO and anti missile technology is talked about?

Well, the plan went wrong. If one listened to the Bush administration, particularly Rumsfeld, the Iraqis would be laying down palm fronds for the invading soldiers to walk on and set up a pro-western democracy within the week. The then pro-western democracy would be so grateful for America's rescue from the hands of Saddam that they would gratefully give American companies privileged contracts to modernize their ageing oil company and extract their oil. Of course, after the initial invasion nothing went according to plan because nothing had been thought through in typical Bush style.

Like many Europeans, many Dutch see America wanting to put missiles in eastern Europe as a deliberate provocation of Russia, especially since the US would be breaking promises to Russia it made after the fall of the USSR. I'm pretty pissed but the continent seems split between seeing America as the aggressor and Russia being the aggressor. I tend towards America being the aggressor because it is America breaking its promises. I think I'm on the majority side too, that is why so many Europeans want to see Obama as President and not another rogue Republican. Whether it would make a difference is probably more hope over experience, a new President has to still work with the old entrenched establishment.

Well those evil Americans are trying to interfere with folks around the world...

http://www.wfp.org/appeals/Wfp_donors/index.asp?section=3&sub_section=4

i just looked at the list, have not looked at the posts between the original and this.  I find it interesting that the amounts donated vs the population and 'economic' prosperity of the donating countries interesting.  And the high place for private donors ... now that's a donation!  How is the list determined, is it for example, if i say i'm from X and donate as an indivdual that the $s i donate is listed against X country?  Or is it if the Government of X donates?  Regardless, that the haves are willing to feed the have nots is good, then the haves can start training the have nots to fish, grow and or farm food sources ... there is never anything wrong with genoristy, only those that abuse it that make it wrong.

i hope we never stop trying to help our fellow human beings, regardless of who/where they are ... because we may need that very help ourselves.

From what I understand that list is strictly from governments to that fund, the private are corporate donations.  In terms of ciitzens donating to charity, the BBC reports that

quote:

Americans donated a record $306bn (£155bn) to charity last year, despite worries over the state of the US economy, an annual study has found.

With $102 billion going to religious organizations.

Making a last effort here to turn this thread back to the OP-

26 June 2007
"Charitable Donations by Americans Reach Record High"
Individual giving accounts for 83 percent of $295 billion total in 2006

By Jeffrey Thomas
USINFO Staff Writer

"Washington -- Americans increased their charitable donations significantly in 2006 to more than $295 billion -- a record, according to a study released June 25 by the Giving USA Foundation, which reports on charitable contributions.

The overwhelming majority of this money was donated by individuals, not corporations or foundations, according to the chairman of Giving USA, Richard Jolly. Donations from individuals, including bequests, accounted for 83.3 percent of total giving last year, or $245.8 billion, he told USINFO.

“The total amount of money that was given to nonprofit institutions is remarkable,” Jolly said. “What we see is when people feel engaged, when they feel a need is legitimate, when they are asked to support it, they do.”

Americans have a long tradition of charitable giving and volunteerism -- the donation of time and labor on behalf of a cause. When disasters happen or a social need arises, government clearly has a responsibility, Jolly said. “But it’s also obvious Americans believe they, too, can make a difference, and they reflect that in terms of giving away a lot of money.”

The United States is “a land of charity,” says Arthur Brooks, an expert on philanthropy and a professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School, who sees charitable giving and volunteerism as the signal characteristic of Americans. "
