I thought electric cars would prove popular but this was surprising good news.

"Over 33,000 buyers signed up for GM electric car"

Wed Aug 13, 2008 12:29am EDT

By Kevin Krolicki

"DETROIT (Reuters) - In a bid to show the demand for the upcoming all-electric Chevrolet Volt, a proponent of the car has released details of an unofficial waiting list for the vehicle with over 33,000 prospective buyers.

Lyle Dennis, a New York neurologist who has emerged as a prominent enthusiast for the battery-powered car from General Motors Corp, has been assembling a list of prospective Volt buyers for over a year through his Web site GM-Volt.com.

On Tuesday, Dennis released details gleaned from the list showing that 33,411 people had signed up to show their intent to buy a Volt when the rechargeable car is released in 2010."

Only if you look at it in a cost per mile way. Low to no carbon emmissions still make this a good step forward. Eventually, the electricity to charge these could come from any number of green sources... either solar, geothermal, ...or one of John McCain's "clean" coal plants, or one of the slip-shod nuclear plants he's hoping to put in everyone's back yard.

Chernobyl a-go-go, everyone!

Plus with a good planning , you can produce more electricity in the future , but you can not create more oil. Being less dependent to oil is a good thing, being less destructive to envoriment is also good. Hoping they will prefer cleaner methods when it comes to producing more electricty.

Enjoy it

On an individual cost level, I don't think we are ever going to be able to return to the near-cost-free driving that we have been accustomed to -- but on an environmental level, AND on the level of ingenuity and progress, this is an improvement after generations of stagnation.

Cheaper is not necessarily 'better' -- or even 'adequate'.

Well unless they upgraded the electric car it isn't something anyone would want to drive on a long term basis anyway.
Some hybrids only had a 5 years shelf life then pretty much it would cost you more to fix it than to buy new.  When you're paying so much more upfront you expect a car that can handle being driven.

As far as electric rates rising...well ours went up 75% two months after we moved to NE...have not went down since.  So, how much more can they go up?

They need to seriously re-think how to manufacture a good car for the future.  Hydrogen cells look promising.  Or how about a car like in back to the future that runs on trash?
Let people steal our trash from us for fuel..I'm all for that.

The price is affordable and should come down as production and competition increases.

I`m  psyched.

Next, practical, easy to employ solar panels to charge the electric commuter-cars and grocery-getters.

Anyone heard of compressed air driven cars?

There`s so much range (and speed) on a charge, then a gas powered air compressor picks up the slack, allowing for long range driving.

The report I heard(NPR) said that 60 MPH and 85 MPG were possible with the car.

Nouw-ice!

Very well stated, this is but one step in the right direction and one of many possible ways to change transportation in the US.

We HAD electric cars being manufactured for the west coast market almost 2 decades ago. It was to keep business going after CA enacted it's "zero emissions" standards. People loved them then, too. (You can probably still find the Youtube clip of the Tonight show with Tom Hanks talking up his E-car.) But then the CA state government took a shift to the right, and they backed off the ZES legislation. As a result, GM recalled all the electrics and had them destroyed. They COULD have been the leaders in this current trend, but they backed away simply because they wanted to keep selling gas guzzlers.

Would you like to guess which country is now in the lead in the manufacture of upcoming electric car models?

If you want to know more about this -- check out the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?"

GM's response totally, totally SUCKed!

the volt is a great step in the correct direction , though i would not buy it first year out of production . I still just love the flex fuel cars yet i have yet to see one flex  refueling station . We can make soy and corn based fuels yet nothing ,honda already showed they have a hydrogen car yet no infrustructure for refueling and the sky high cost s . then again i remember what a new VCR and CD player cost once too .

The Volt is their way of trying to make electric cars "sexy" by building something that would show up on "Top Gear"... big whoop. The bulk of commuters need something that can go at regular highway speeds within a 50 mile range each way. If they could build an electric car that is equal to the Honda Jax, or the Versa... roughly the same price as a gas powered edition, THEN we'd be talking about a viable product.

We could, in 50 years time, have all the electricity we ever need.

If we started during Reagan, we'd have capacity to offset the dwindling oil supplies RIGHT NOW.

Thanks Shortsighted Assholes in the Reagan Administration, for not making energy independence and domination a national priority.

Oil is *so* 20th Century.

This is the 21st Century -- And all the energy we need is falling from the sky, and we're too damn stupid to make buckets.

"Top Gear" has become, against all odds, one of my favorite television shows. I'm NOT into "penis cars" in any way... but those guys know how to make a show entertaining... even as they mock you by reviewing vehicles that no one but the top 2% of income earners in the world could possibly afford. I think my favorite episode so far is the great "trans Africa" road rally... where Hammond proves that the biggest, most expensivemake is NOT the best thing you can get for off road travel.... (and ultimately, that VW bugs are indestructible.)
