I am a foot dragger when it comes to software. They dragged me kicking and screaming into XP, I was happy with 98SE up until last year when an issue caused restore back to the point before I had the router and DSL. I know a few things but not enough to set it up in 98SE. I installed XP perhaps a year ago because they wouldn't support it, that is walk me through the setup on the phone. I argued that I had 98SE when they SOLD me this stuff, so support it. They scoffed. I had some remarks, like "what, did my money expire ?". I was not very pleased.

So I did a "sidestep" install of XP. What I mean by that is I changed the install directory, in this case from C:/WINDOWS to C:/WINDOW. That way I didn't lose anything. Even my old desktop is there and I had alot of stuff there. I know it's not good to store alot of stuff in desktop and I also know it is not the best thing to install XP the way I did. But it is the way it is now. But it does run quite well.

When I had 98 I could play DVDs, now I can't. Microsoft themselves don't seem to have the codecs or whatever, I have tried. I did have the WM9 upgrade and not only would it play a DVD it would play the DAT file off a DVD, but sometimes the aspect ratio was screwed up if I did it that way. Also I refuse to set the region on the DVD drive, I think there should be a way to do this without setting the region, but right now it won't even play region free DVDs.

The other PC balks at an mpeg4 file, but says it might be able to play it, and does, but it has XP Media Center Edition. This one has XP Pro corporate edition and simply won't play it at all. Where do I get the codecs or whatever ?

I have restored just about everything else, including my manually modified sendto menu. I figured out how to do it in 98, and it is not quite as simple in XP but I got it done. However I had another neat little function that I would like to have back.

In 98 I performed a search for *.*, but in a specific directory, my music directory. Then it says "save this search", which generates an fnd file. I put this file right in the start menu and it would open the search window and automatically limit the search to C:/MUSIC. It worked fast, it didn't bother searching anything else, but it came in real handy when you can't remember who did something you want to hear. I would like to have that in XP and I am not sure if it is possible or not. The original fnd file is still here from 98, and it opens the search window, but does not limit the search. It was nice to get the search results in five seconds instead of five minutes.

So if there is a way to do that in XP I would like to know. Would it maybe be possible to find the search program in the 98 files (they are all still there) and just invent a filetype and associate it with that program ? It is not inconcievable but I can't seem to figure out where the old search program is, and have no idea if it will run in XP. Everything else seems to run, but this is more of an internal Windows thing.

However I have taken cardfile.exe off a Windows 3X machine and made it run on a Windows 9X machine. Think something like that would be possible here ? I am no stranger to setting up file associations, I just can't seem to find out what that program's filename was. Even now it doesn't show up in explorer. Well I mean the lnk file in the old start menu. If I could find the program, I could rename the search file to fnt or something and associate it with that.

Other than those two issues, everything works.

Any ideas ?

You can go to the Microsoft site and try to find the add on.  However, because you purposely named the directory incorrectly it will make it difficult for Windows to find the files that it needs.  If you have a chance to put in a path name try to direct it to the System folder under Window.  Otherwise you may just need to suck it up and name the directory correctly.

Well, not answering your two questions asked, but some advice on playing media:

Download the K-Lite Standard Codec, and use Media Player Classic that comes with it.  Should be able to play any media file that your computer has the processing power to use.
