ORIGINAL: Sunnyfey OK, Usually I have no trouble comeing up with something to cook around here, It's my specialty, my fav hobby and past time. this weekend Im hosting a cookout for Master and I's friends. It's my first one for them so...obviously super nervous about it....which is silly but eh...its what I do. So Im makeing sweet/tangy bbq pork ribs for the main, I have a selection of light beers, and a refreshing mixed drink for the Ladies and those with lighter palates, and a minty lemonade for the kids. Ok so Im trying to steer away from the comfort bbq food you know? baked beans, stuffed deviled eggs and the like. Im having the damned time coming up with an appetizer. I want something interesting and different, I was thinking maybe some grilled salad, (actual grilled green leaf ) but all the recipes I can find for that have a distinctly asian feel to it, and...that wouldent work at all with the rest of the flavors I have picked out. The Bbq is a slightly spicey, reletively smokey, marginally sweet and very tangy taste with a tomatoe base (think...more liquid smoke and vinigar then brown sugar..lip smackin i tell you) the drinks are all citrus based, the beer is an apple cider, the mixed drink is a vodka peachy lemony thingy i made myself, and the lemonade for the kids. So.......any ideas? (1) Grilled sweet potato salad. It will pick up the tang and tone down the vinegar in the barbecue sauce, and provide a rich, unusual side. (2) Corn/Mango/Coconut chutney... makes a nice replacement for traditional salads, gets better at room temperature instead of wilting, and can be 'spiced up' with some jerk seasoning and crushed mint for the adults, and toned down and mellowed with the addition of some coconut milk for the kids. If you want the recipes, just holler. CFB
