Sunnyfey -> What appetizer to serve at my bbq? (8/14/2008 10:42:17 AM)

OK, Usually I have no trouble comeing up with something to cook around here, It's my specialty, my fav hobby and past time. this weekend Im hosting a cookout for Master and I's friends. It's my first one for them so...obviously super nervous about it....which is silly but eh...its what I do. So Im makeing sweet/tangy bbq pork ribs for the main, I have a selection of light beers, and a refreshing mixed drink for the Ladies and those with lighter palates, and a minty lemonade for the kids. Ok so Im trying to steer away from the comfort bbq food you know? baked beans, stuffed deviled eggs and the like. Im having the damned time coming up with an appetizer. I want something interesting and different, I was thinking maybe some grilled salad, (actual grilled green leaf )  but all the recipes I can find for that have a distinctly asian feel to it, and...that wouldent work at all with the rest of the flavors I have picked out.

The Bbq is a slightly spicey, reletively smokey, marginally sweet and very tangy taste  with a tomatoe base (think...more liquid smoke and vinigar then brown sugar..lip smackin i tell you)

the drinks are all citrus based, the beer is an apple cider, the mixed drink is a vodka peachy lemony thingy i made myself, and the lemonade for the kids.

So.......any ideas?

I can grill most anything.  I love to cook as well.  No matter what you have to have a good veggie platter.  Maybe a different sort of dip than the norm.

As far as appetizers go...I usually go overboard on all food.  I wouldn't only make ribs..as many don't like them.
Do you know the tastes of your guests?    You may want to ask them what they would like?

Just keep it light so they can load up on dinner instead of prior.

yeah  I take my guests taste in to account when i plan the menu, thus what I have so far, I know these are the taste they like, since me and Master have a set date to see all our friends every other week (really...so nice to see them that often). And frankly, I hate to say it (lmao) I love my friends so much! But the only reason I really plan on big dinners like this is for the simple fact...I adore cooking for lots of people...really, its just feeding my ego (hehe!)

Anyway, randomness aside. I have a reputation for always cooking something different and exciteing. So, whats a girl to do, I was thinking something involveing cold sauseage and some sort of cracker and dip.....and my veg platter is usually artichoke hearts, pickled okra, hearts of palm and egg plant and hummus or some random sour cream based dip i mix up. might throw in some 5 cheese dip and tortilla chips, and something with balsamic vineigar.....cuz...i love that stuff.....

What about grilled veggies?

An twist on an old favourite, instead of potato salad, sweet potato salad. Or a slightly different coleslaw.

(1) Grilled sweet potato salad. It will pick up the tang and tone down the vinegar in the barbecue sauce, and provide a rich, unusual side.

(2) Corn/Mango/Coconut chutney... makes a nice replacement for traditional salads, gets better at room temperature instead of wilting, and can be 'spiced up' with some jerk seasoning and crushed mint for the adults, and toned down and mellowed with the addition of some coconut milk for the kids.

If you want the recipes, just holler.

For an appetizer why not go with some fruits.  Not only are they good, but they will help keep your guests hydrated in the heat.
Grapes are great for that, cut up some kewi, oranges, cherries, you get the idea

Your main meal is heavy, so make everything you serve before light and not filling.  5 bean salads with smoked tomotoes, Greek Salad, even in the heat these will stand up better than anything with mayo or any type of cream sauce

Vendaval -> RE: What appetizer to serve at my bbq? (8/14/2008 12:43:40 PM)

I would stay away from food that can spoil easily in the heat, like potatoe salad.  Instead go with fresh cut or grilled vegtables and fresh fruit, maybe an anti-pasto tray too.

More bbq.

Something lite, like double deep fried turduckin.[;)]

Fruit-veggies-cheese-crackers-dip or a nice soup.

How about egg salad finger sandwhiches with fresh chopped up celery in them?
You can put them on ice to keep them cool.

Owner59 -> RE: What appetizer to serve at my bbq? (8/14/2008 1:54:29 PM)

Mmmm <mouth waters....>

Add some tuna and some cucumber`n special sauce, sandwhiches.

How about a nice summer soup?

Scandalous! Potato salad belongs at a bbq! [:D]

I'm a fan of grilled veggie skewers, maybe with some pineapple thrown on there.

What about the guy's penis that got stuck in the park bench?

windchymes -> RE: What appetizer to serve at my bbq? (8/14/2008 2:40:53 PM)

Marinate some shrimp in lime juice and cilantro, put them on skewers (soaked in water first so they don't burn) with a pineapple chunk and a lime wedge, and grill.
