We have all run into them ( hopefully not literally), the idiots who are putting on makeup, argueing on the phone, checking GPS on a laptop, trying to reach the kid in the back seat, etc. Yesterday I ran into two that scared the living masochist out of me.

The first was my sister in law who  had our neice in the back of the car in her baby seat. Said neice is 2 years old and 25 lbs so the forward facing seat didn't bother me, but the fumbling with the dvd control unit and focus on the screen and trying to get the sound to work while driving down the road at 70 mph did. Blanching I took the unit from her and worked on it myself.

The second was a little blue car that was weaving all over the road, in and out of his lane at 75 mph.  We went around him..thank the powers that be and as we passed..noted that the driver was READING A FLIPPING BOOK RESTING ON HIS STEERING WHEEL!!!!! No, he was not checking directions, this was a hard back book that he was reading while driving. If our exit hadn't been less than 1/4 mile away we would have dropped back to get the plate number, as it was all we could do was call 911 and report it. Here's hoping they caught him before he caused a wreck.

So anyone else have a Scary driver on the road story to tell?

I confess that there is a certain stretch of Interstate 84 between Ontario Oregon and Portland, Oregon that I have driven soooooo many times that I used to flip through the occasional magazine while driving it. No serious reading however, just casual glancing while mostly looking at the road. It's a mostly flat, straight interstate through some very boring country. (Eastern Oregon desert.)

I've seen a lot though as someone who's done some serious driving. The worst for me though was the couple having the full-blown fist fight at 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. That was a definite 911 call.

I was driving on the Interstate, middle lane when out of nowhere the woman in front of me decides to freakin STOP so she can take the Exit ramp off to the right.
Stupid bitch! My legs were shaking the whole rest of the ride!

Then another one, on another Interstate I saw a woman holding a child's book up so the kid in the back car seat could see it/the dumb bitch was READING the book to the kid!!!!  Looking back/forth. I honked at her repeatedly/made the motion of BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL!!

my oldest was walking my youngest to her school one day and the driver (going eastbound) zipped through the red light just as they started crossing the street. idiot driver was very lucky that he didn't have to deal with if he had hit them but he did instead hit a squad car sitting near the crosswalk. my girls were shaken up a little however the driver (drunk as a skunk at 7a) and the cop weren't badly hurt.

one time i was doing parent patrol for another school and noticed this hispanic woman with youngsters in the car applying full makeup and brushing her hair while driving. she was so into her last minute grooming that she ran the 4-way stop sign where the more youngsters were about to cross. the police caught up with her a few seconds later.

Try driving out here in the winter.....the Snowbirds descend on the Valley starting about late October......OMG!!!!!  We're talking little old people who are peeking at the roadway THROUGH the hole of the steering wheel!  I don't know how many times I've wondered if there was really anybody driving the vehicle!  And we're talking the big cars...buick roadmasters, cadi's, caprices, etc.  And red lights.....forget it!  i can't tell you how many times I've stopped for the red, and watched the little old lady or man sail right on through, and they are totally oblivious!!!!!!!  For some reason, it's more the women that drive the men around......of course, some of them look about as old as God, but.......if I ever drive like that, I hope someone has the smarts to take my license away!  Alot of them get AZ licenses, because they expire in 20 YEARS......and the only way they have to take a test is if they have an accident here, and the police officer taking the report believes that they need one.

Minimum speed on the expressways out here is 75...regardless of the posted speed limit.....they put cameras up on the 101 Loop, and pegged people going 142 mph on them!  Now, toss in a snowbird entering the x-way at 40 whopping miles per hour, and you can just imagine the brake lites and asses puckering.......I went out on the 202 here a week or so ago, and totally flipped out!  I'd forgotten how much fun it is to drive them, as me and my scooter stay on city streets!  By the time I got off the 202, I was almost homicidal!!!!!  Add in the typical idjits with cell phones, texting, laptop users, women putting on makeup, and it's no wonder rush hour here is a total bitch!!!!  Makes one seriously think about taking up walking!

One of the worst that I've seen was this man was driving in the left lane holding up his right arm to deflect the blows that his female companion in the car with him was laying on him. I mean this chick was punching the hell out of him when he swerved over into the right lane, off the road and into a drainage ditch.

I think it would have been better to have started the fight before they started to drive or waited until they got home.

Any day you are on the road in Nebraska it is a bad day for driving.  I've seen drivers ed cars.  No idea what they teach.  Though I can say for certain after coming from California.  Californians get such a bad name.  They drive well.
Nebraska drivers don't have any clue at all.  I wrote a letter to the newspaper...offended a few thousand NE drivers who think they drive so well.
The only different between Ca and NE is you have millions more cars on the road in CA.  So it seems bad.  Here you have so few they think they can do anything on the road.
Some people don't know what a blinker is for.  Nobody knows what a limit line is for.  Every single day since I've lived here I've seen someone stop in the middle of the street at a stop light.  So if it is your turn you have to curve around them to go straight.
They've been working on the lights in town.  All flashing red.  Well nobody knows you allow the person to the right go first.  Then...minimum of 3 cars go through one behind the other as each car goes through the light.  Not one like it should be..but 3.  No cops of course.
Daily you will see a person stop at a red light.  Only to get tired of waiting I guess and decide to just run the red light.  I have no idea what goes through a persons mind when already stopped to decide...hey..I should break the law and just drive right through this red light?  It isn't like they were speeding and couldn't stop...they were stopped.
Then add ice and snow to the road that doesn't go away for 4 months.  As well as the bars allowing drunks on the road.

We actually had a guy die at a bar last fall.  He drank himself to death.  The cops won't hang outside the bars because they feel that is entrapment.  Doesn't matter how many people the drunk kills as they are on their way home.
I have a group of friends I hang out with from time to time.  Football games.  They bar hop.  My friend Wes takes his camera everywhere he goes.  He is the typical pervert.  Took a photo of a womans breast.  About the 3rd bar of the night for them.  Next week he shows her..she asks where he got it from.  Come to find out she was so drunk after the 2nd bar she didn't remember anything at all from that point on.  Yet she drove to 6 more bars that night.
How many lives were in danger?

That is a typical day of driving in NE, where you get a license at 13.

And Blackphx wonders why I have hold of the Oh My Gods Handle and stomp the Jeezus Brake when he drives. I trust his driving implicitly...sigh..ok mostly, except when his boss calls and adds to an already over booked schedule or he is really too tired to drive and insists on it. On that latter if I say pull over I will drive, he usually will. It's not his driving that scares me, it is the other people on the road. We live in Florida..land of the Snowbirds and retiree's. We have the Flying Dutchmen (cars with no visible driver), tourists that take their cars out for a walk during rush hour and of course those who forgot to get directions before leaving the hotel. We have those who execute a Miami left turn ( from the far right lane across traffic at the last second to make the left turn), Miami lane changes (sorry about your car you shouldn't have been in my way) and the Fuck that Seat is HOT dance while trying to merge into traffic.

I have seen one person with two dogs in their lap, one standing on the steering wheel, seen them pick their teeth in the rear view mirror, turn and argue with kids in traffic, curling their hair (I can only presume they were plugged into the cigarette lighter), Adjusting the radio and talking on a cell phone at the same time, one mother seemed to be watching the DVD with her kids, she had a screen in the front and in the back for them (action movie..hopefully she didn't cause some action) and last but not least I have seen them necking and driving. I don't want to know where the hands were. But the guy reading the book, not skimming, but actually engrossed in his reading scared the hell out of me and I am a bibliophile. I KNOW how focused you can get on a chapter..Pull the hell over before you kills someone or yourself and never finish the book!

poenkitten (who pulls over to answer the damned cell phone or lets it ring)

P.S. Good Lord someone actually had a fist  fight while DRIVING? You won't even see something like that on Wrestling as a match!!!

We put in new speed bumps through town.  During this time...of course we had to close the road.  Put up signs a half a mile down the road.
More signs where the road was closed.  This road..the road by our house..has no place to pull off.  It is not maintained..it's just a little county road.  Tractors and local traffic.
Well we have 16,000 cars a day down our little road.  Houses along the road.  Speed limit is 25 and the cars do 75.  Cops won't stop them because there is no where to pull them over.

In any event we have the signs in place.  Of course people can't be bothered to learn to read on any level.  They go around the signs.  Which means driving down into the culvert into an alfalpha field.  Down into the culvert.  Meaning unless they had 4 wheel drive they got stuck.  Our friend is building the bump.  First one he took his skiploader and helped them out.  Only to hear them bitch and say they were going to sue the city because he put a scratch on their car.

Anyway in the end grand total of people we know who went into the ditch 38.  All because they couldn't be bothered to read a simple sign.
Obey the rules of the road.

not quite on topic here...but when i was in college there was a moronic professor who was too good to obey the 15 mph campus speed limit. He would speed to the point of nearly killing a few of us.
Over the summer break the school black topped the road and installed a very high speed bump. Professor Dumbass hit it head on, going at least 50mph. He blew two tires, lost his hubcaps, bent the hood so badly it did not close, and best of all, bent the frame of his car. He did not bother to look at the "speed bump" sign.

We have had a few here who have launched themselves into people living rooms not following speed laws or acknowleging speed bump signs. Honestly the best though are the idiots who steal a car ( 3 in past year) and speed onto the dirt road, skid, over correct and end up face first in the drainage ditch. 2 of these numbskulls have been arrested as they were unconscious in the cars when the cops arrived, the other one and his partner in crime got away..but were picked up at the hospital being treated.

School police wouldn't bust him?  I've been busted more than once by school police in my life.  They are usually right on top of offenders of any kind.

Anyway our bump is not the typical bump.  Its about I want to say ten feet or so wide.  No idea if that means it is supposed to be more effective or less.  The first one does make you slow.  The second one...well I've tested it and I can go 40 over it..but I also have a 4 wheel drive.  Though in my husbands F-150 he can only do about 20.

If these morons around here hurt their cars they want to sue over it.  After all somehow it would be the cities fault for trying to get them to obey the laws of the road.

Black, Palm Springs is exactly the way you are talking.  Full of old timers who drive the way they drive.  It is up to you to be a defensive driver.  Real scary stuff down there.

I remember years ago some kid stole a vet off of a car lot.  The cops chased him through the streets of town...only for him to hit a palm tree head on.  The kid stole the car but really didn't know how to drive yet.

People swearing into your path...etc..is larger town stuff.  Anyway thats what it seems to me.  Its a typical day.  Here in the smaller town the school bus making an illegal left hand turn in front of you seems to be the norm.

I guess since I didn't grow up here it doesn't seem normal to me the way they drive.

The NY Thruway is not so bad, you want to drive the speed limit, just stay in the right lane. But I've had the distinct unhappiness of driving I-84 from NY into Connecticut lately and although it's marked 55, nobody goes under 80. The police don't ticket unless you're close to 85. This is a curvy two lane road with no shoulders and shouldn't be driven at 80.  Yesterday we were going a mere 75 in the right lane when a car came up behind us, tailgated until he could pass, and then roared off going 95 mph. We were very happy to see him pulled over by a police officer a couple of miles down the road.

On Janurary 26th, 1989 I was doing about 30 in a 55 because the weather was really really bad. Some people were passing me and as expected there was an accident up ahead. It was raining hard and the road was flooded.

I barely saw something in the distance and decided to slow down but apparently there was ice under the water. The brakes worked, but I did not slow down. As I got closer I started to turn the wheel back and forth to see if I could get any traction. I figured if nothing else head for the wall. Too late.

I would have taken the wall, in a 1973 Electra 225 you are pretty much immortal at that speed. I was in the lane next to the left lane. I finally got some traction and a tailspin had just started when I hit a 1974 Maverick. I wound up hitting it with my right front fender, which is better than hitting it straight on, this is a big car. I was also thinking I could maybe get into the "fast" lane because it looked like nothing was there, maybe I would have time to stop. Good thing I didn't.

When I got out to check on the other driver I caught a glimpse. Traffic was stopped because of an accident up ahead and people were walking around. I would have run them over. So I went over to the car I hit to check on the driver and there are two kids in the car.

On that day I became a safer driver. Thoughts went through my head about what could've happened.

What I did that day was not really unsafe. I did slow down, just not enough. The fact was 30 was too fast. I just didn't know it.

I think the crux of the matter is that some people can drive and others can't. If you can drive, you can drive with a couple of beers in you (I don't mean drunk), or talking on the phone. You know how to pay attention. But some people shouldn't even drive sober and not on the phone.

I have seen so much stupid shit in Cleveland that if I were to get started, this post would be one of my longest. I've seen people in the fast lane dart over to the exit ramp within about fifty feet. Damn, can't you think ahead ? I get into the lane I need a mile or two before I have to be there.

And the people who ride your ass and have to pass you at any cost. They think they are in a race. In the old days you could get away with a few things.  But with today's traffic you simply can't. Even though population in the city of Cleveland proper has dropped, many people who live in the suburbs work downtown.

What's more, these people who do not think ahead cause traffic jams. It gets so bad that you are sure you are going to see a wreck, but there is none. It is people who have to change lanes right away because they didn't think ahead. You can't go throught the car in front of you so the only option is to slow down to get a break. That means everybody behind you has to slow down. You get enough idiots like this and I-90 becomes a parking lot.

Though quite an issue, the accidents they cause are not the whole story. Look at all the cars in a traffic jam, each and every one of them is wasting gas, putting out heat and CO2, and wearing out, at least the engine. Even without a catastrophe they are hurting society, that because twelve seconds of their precious time is worth more than the lives of the other drivers on the road. Fuck everybody else, that's how they think.

And those who think that it's a contest to see who can do the most other things while driving are a similar lot.

I have a friend who's one of the scariest drivers I know, simply because she's so scared of driving! She was trying to merge onto the highway despite me telling her she could stay in the lane we were already in... she ended up forcing an 18-wheeler to slam on his brakes, only to get back over twenty feet later. Don't even get me started on when she tries to light her cigarettes. She thinks matches "make it taste better" and refuses to use the actual car lighter. I think she has a burn hole in her seat on a 5 month old car already.

I get to meet the darwin award winning drivers daily here in the phx valley of the dangerous driver s .I just have to remember the rules .In summer if 3 people pull up to a 4 way stop sign who goes through first ? The one with thier windows down they dont have A/C and will kill you to get that hot dry hair dryer breeze .
If its a beater  car let them go they dont have insurance anyway .
dive with a mixture of offensive and defensive  tactics sometimes its best to have the wreck behind you  and you can keep driving VS in front of you .
In AZ they think green lights start the race ,yellow means floor it its gunna turn red any second , red means oooh crap i hope nobody saw me run that  speed up and look baffled .If you see the traffic is moving slowly ahead  its prob the police pace car .
I actually saw a woman eating a sandwich , while driving 68 mph and texting  driving with a knee passing people on the freeway,i decided to exit and get a bottled water .
When in doubt follow rule one if you encounter and meet  window down drivers .
