Sometime during the past couple of weeks I realized my pc no longer makes any sound.  I was watching a youtube video at the time, and it dawned on me that I should be hearing dialogue but I wasn’t.

Today I tried listening to Yahoo IM Radio…and again…no sound.

It wasn’t all that long ago that I ran YIM 100% of the time the pc was on, and I had YIM Radio playing about 90% of the time.  But lately I have fallen out of the habit of running YIM 100% of the time the pc is open and I have at least opened one browser window for other reasons.  (E.g., it seemed to waaaay slow down the browser speed.)

I think something has probably happened *to my pc*, causing it to become mute.

So far, this is what I have done to try and restore sound:

Checked to be sure the speakers are turned on and turned up loud enough that that I would certainly hear sound, while running YIM Radio.

100% sure, the speakers are turned on and turned up.

Checked to be sure the pc speakers have a wire running from them to the tower, and that it is securely plugged into the tower.

About 99% sure the answer is yes.

Checked to be sure the wire from the pc speakers to the power surge protector is securely plugged into surge protector.

Again, 99% sure it is.

Checked to be sure both surge protectors I use are working.

100% sure the answer is yes.

I don’t know of anthing else to do to try and restore my pc sound.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks!

candy, go to your Start button, then click on Control Panel, then click on Sound/Audio Devices, look and see if the volume is off.

no no no.

First check the amplification protractor on the back of the PC is set to enable. After doing that you need to configure windows to be "open when sunny" that should fix the aforementioned problification.

Your speaker port might be clogged.  Using an eyedropper, gently squirt distilled water (not tap water, that will short out the computer) into the speaker jack and it should fix the problem.

If that doesn't work, left click the little speaker icon in your sys tray and turn up the volume or click the mute/unmute button.

Was that meant to be taken seriously stef?

Just asking.

TY (or F**k You, lol) very much...as the case may be.

(Absolutely no clue how to do any of this if it was serious, btw.)

P.S. Level, I did.  TY for the idea, but volume is turned on, so it didn't fix the problem.

Stef was half serious (or being half helpful, depends on how you look at it) .

Bottom right of your screen, there should be a speaker icon. It can control your volume.

Unless you recently downloaded Vista SP1, in which case you may have to reinstall the audio device drivers, IIRC....

Not running Vista are you ?

I found the no sound problem after my last attempt to install SP1. My solution, rid SP 1 off my system and following the advice from a knowledgable friend, only download from my computer maker's updates, in my case HP.

I still get the new software and important updates thing, and on looking I see it is SP1 again, so I ignore, I do not want a repeat of the last SP1 failure.

Looking at the various forums, the laptop forum and vista users forum, the sound loss thing is common when trying to install SP1. Microshaft, their help files were useless.
