The Rhetoric of political debate tends to be passionate. The Humor of political debates tends to be biting and sarcastic. The Fun of political debate is when pointing out Hypocracy, you clearly get your opponents goat.

This can be done without attacks upon your opponents personal being but there is no reason one cannot attack as absurd a political or cultural ideology, nor challange ideas with sarcasim, humor or even a "gotchca" line.

What gets me is why some people get so offended in threads they themselves choose to read. No one is holding a gun to their head and making them read it are they?

As long as there are no direct personal attacks, why would one care if liberals and Conseratives, or the Right and the left, Republicans or democrats "slam" each other???

What makes one run and report a political thread? Attacks on a specific poster or the general points of the thread itself?

Many folks believe that an attack on their ideas or opinions is an attack on the person.  Which for me is completely off.  I don't think there is one person here that I have debated with that I wouldn't sit down and enjoy a good meal and drink with.  I suppose those are folks that define themselves by their political beliefs, just as there are folks that define themselves by their kink.  I like to think those things are just window dressing and extra details when relating to folks.

Just my quick thoughts,
Thadius

I also think that there are people who get their kink off by being offended and venting to authorities.

Some kind of snitch fetish I suppose.

Still...

I think that direct personal attacks on posters should not go unchallenged.

But calling out an a particular "group thought" with a gotcha line over a hypocracy that they have rationalized away (and hasn't had rationalixe away something thats uncomfortable about something we believe in?) is part of the fun.

Where there is passion there can be deep offense. When people are deeply offended then there will be some that choose to comment or report. It's the same on the streets as it is here.

Really, it's more just a waste of time. People who already know what they think and will never consider other views slam people on the other side(s) just as they. It's pointless, except for ego gratification.

Far more productive would be addressing opponents in terms they'd accept and convince them to vote otherwise. Far easier to attack the media and the politicians--and not that they don't deserve it at times--but if the rest of us didn't eat it up, it would be different (as we'd vote with our feet and dollars).

How many people HERE outline a candidate's strengths (beyond the tired talking points)? Far more common is sharing the latest "slam-bite."

For you it's fun. Geez. Enjoy. But to what end escapes me.

Well this is not about candidate or even about a specific political agenda.

Sure, eating well, diet and exercise are far more productive too but clearly there is room for
junk food too.

But I'll make this point again for your "For you it's fun. Geez. Enjoy. But to what end escapes me" line.

Nobody is being forces to read and or comment on any threads, political or otherwise. If the politics of the thread offend you, don't read it or comment upon it,.

Not the point, Dude.

Politics matter. If the debate sucks, it matters all the same.

Hiding isn't the answer to anything--anymore than cheap either/or framing.

Live well. Enjoy the junk food.

Because it's politics.  After religion and baseball the most emotional and least rational topic of discussion anywhere in these United States (religion and football in the UK).

That only works when people are uncommitted centrists or are political pragmatists.

The majority of folks are neither--ideology in all its varied forms is as essential to the average person as meat and drink, and far more likely to tempt people to violence and/or violent speech.

The genius of the United States is the manner in which all ideologies manage to somehow bend to form cohesive, non-violent, and occasionally coherent government.

No matter who wins in November, we are not likely to have armed mobs in the streets come January.

I'm really scratching my head here, trying to figure out what the subject line has to do with the OP.

However, when there were few "anti-war" responses about the Georgia/Russia attacks, folks concluded that anti-war types were hypocrites, instead of folks going "this would be a lost cause."

Silence does not always mean assent.

Ah but those same things are accused of those of us that don't speak out about each of Bush's missteps.

Are you suggesting that if one candidate or the other wins there will be armed mobs in the street around the world?  Interesting, I wonder which candidate would be sparking such a reaction.

Oh I'd hate to influence the Americans on their epic democratic process by giving my answer to that.

Weren't you stating elsewhere that such things don't influence us, as we tend to do whatever we are going to do anyways?
