Aneirin -> What is politics about ? (8/17/2008 4:36:12 PM)

A simple question which I feel may have many answers, but to a world wide audience I have to ask;

Is politics about people or self empowerment ?

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: What is politics about ? (8/17/2008 5:10:15 PM)

old people trying to relive their highschool popularity

FatDomDaddy -> RE: What is politics about ? (8/17/2008 10:54:37 PM)

As opposed to middle aged people trying to change their highschool unpopulatity?

Both.  It is about empowering one's self to influence other people.

It is the adult version of Monopoly.

There are too many variables for the way you frame the question, Anerian. Politics can be about people and self-empowerment, but mostly politics are about the organization of power within a social structure.  Even small groups of humans will organize themselves into some type of system.

"Distribution of power within political systems"

" There are many models of power distributions, also known as "forms of government". Most real governments exhibit properties of multiple forms. Common forms are:
  • Autocracy: One individual retains complete and absolute power over others. This is also known as despotism.
  • Monarchism: A king or queen has ultimate control over the distribution of power, but does share it with other individuals. Power is usually transmitted by heredity— in the primogeniture system, for example, the eldest son of a king will ascend to that position when the current king dies or resigns.
  • Oligarchy: Political power is vested in a few individuals, who usually pass power by a hereditary[citation needed] system.
  • Republic: Voting citizens elect representatives who propose, make, and enforce laws. Also known as representative democracy.
  • Democracy: Citizens directly vote in lawmaking. In contrast to representative democracy, this is sometimes known as a direct democracy.
  • Anarchism: A decentralized grassroots participatory system of free associations and institutions where the law and social structure ensure an absence of hierarchy.
  • Ochlocracy: What some argue to be the end product of an unstable lawless system, a system known as "rule by organized crime". Such a system emerges when powerful gang-like organizations arrogate power and develop a semi-legitimate status.
  • Plutocracy: A society in which power is distributed according to wealth. "

it's about kissing ass, keeping accounts of who you owe and who owes you and calling in those favors when you're up to your ass in something.  it has never been about the public good.  it comes down to knowing where the skeletons are buried and using that information to your advantage.  seems to be the way most politicians work these days.

I will add this disclaimer -

" Peter Principle

NOUN:

The theory that employees within an organization will advance to their highest level of competence and then be promoted to and remain at a level at which they are incompetent. "

Modern day politics, is equivalent, to telling a girl you like her, and you just don't want to get in her pants, but really you do but if you said that you'd rarely or ever get in any woman's pants, and she knows that to. So, what do you two do, you take part in a mutual lie and play dumb to get what you both want without seeming slutty about it to much. She saves face(citizens keeps belief in moral purity), and he got what you wanted him to give(resources in return for power and control). And so since the lie was so well acted, you can run around acting suprised and hurt when you "find" out he's a bastard. But really you knew that already, that's what you wanted to begin with.

Simple, a citizen, is a self deluded whore that pretends she is virginal for the sake of appearances. A politician, plays off the citizens desire for ego gratification, and maintains their belief in their moral superiority, thus getting elected, and can go about doing all the bad shit, you know he's gotta do to sustain your lifestyle.

Simplest definition: A politician is a person seeking authority and power, who gets that authority and power by telling you the lies you want him to tell you.

Interesting analogy. I would have gone with something more like; sheep who have been told all their lives there are big bad wolves who wish to eat them, so run to the slaughter house for protection.

I’ll take my chances with the wolves; thank you.

Politics happens.

As soon as people group up,politics happens.

Just ask someone who works for a larger company. There`s politics involved at your church and school.

Join or try to run a property owners association or the like.Even a service club like Rotary International has politics involved.

A buddy of mine won`t couch hockey anymore because of the politics and personalities involved. The parents are the worst,he says.

When people gather,politics happens.

It`s inescapable,though people try.
But no one`s completely free of it`s affects.

The "system" we have that picks our leaders has been evolving for centuries and keeps changing.

It may not be perfect, but what is?

It could be a lot worse and at least we have some say in who leads us.
