Celene -> Needing tech type support (8/17/2008 4:58:48 PM)

I know there are gazillons (rough estimate) of techies and IT types here and I have the silliest little problem. Looking for a quick fix, if you could please.

For whatever reason, I cannot bring up the options for cutting and pasting when I do the old standby "right click"....
How do I reset the controls so that right clicking gives me the drop down menu of those options (cut, copy, paste, etc.) and makes my life easy once again?

(It's moments like these that I really miss my kid. )

I'm not a tech. And your description is, sorry to say, somewhat vague.

A temporary fix, use your keyboard.

ALT key and the c key = copy
ALT key and the v key = past
ALT key and the x key = cut
ALT key and the z key = undo

I've been using the control keys - but I want to have the drop down options back.
Thanks anyway.

Do you know how to access your control panel? I don't know what version of Windows you might be using. (Assuming you are using Windows.) I know that Vista is really different. They have it practically buried.

Also, do you get the dropdown menu if you right click instead of left click? If so, then it's a simple matter of reversing the mouse keys.

If the right click doesn't work on anything it could just be a bad mouse. You can plug any number of mouses in (mice) to the USB ports. If any one of them works it is the mouse itself.

If they all do not work, you will most likely have to repair or reinstall Windows. If right click works in other programs, you might get by with a browser "update" so what you have to determine is if it works in Word for example.

DO NOT set the PC to switch mouse buttons under these conditions. You might not be able to set it back. It can be done but to say how would be a treatise at least. It involves the Tab, Ctrl and the spacebar. Better just to not go there.

Does the right click work in other programs than IE ? (or whatever browser you use)

That is the crux of the matter at this time.

~Fast Reply~

I'm currently away from the house but I sent Val the link to this thread. If he knows something he will stick his head in.

Do you EVER get a menu when you right-click?  Or is cut & paste just not always available (but other options are)?  If you get a menu but not cut and paste, then that is something that is site-specific and you have to use your keyboard to get around it (and the standard set up is CTRL-C and CTRL-V, not ALT).

If you NEVER get a menu when you right-click, go to START, CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS & OTHER HARDWARE, MOUSE.  You should get a menu with most likely 5 tabs at the top:  BUTTONS, POINTERS, POINTER OPTIONS, WHEEL, HARDWARE.

Under the BUTTONS tab, make sure there is NO check where it says "Switch primary and secondary buttons."

Under the HARDWARE tab, click TROUBLESHOOT and follow the prompts.  Your mouse driver may be corrupted, and you may have to reinstall it.

Recapping what has been said here:

Does ANYTHING happen now when you right click?   Odds are excellent that is a Mouse problem.  Try cleaning your mouse.

If you can still use your right click for some functions and not for others- than in order to help you we'll need to know the kind of computer you have, the kind of Operating System it uses, and which programs do not allow for the functionality you wish.

Perhaps it's a browser problem ? Firefox gives me many more options when I right click that Explorer, including the ones you mention, OP.
