We all have gotten tickets.  Its the cost of driving.

Not necessarily so.  I've held a driver's license for 34 years and always have had a clean driving record.

And yes, there have been times, in medical emergencies that my speed has been extremely over the limit~~~

pahunkboy -> RE: “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/21/2008 1:19:40 PM)

If the speed limit could be higher- then the state should raise it.

A sick dog is not an excuse to drive 95 MPH.    If it was then all of us would be speeding so as to assist a sick dog somewhere.

In Pennsylvania,  the mountains happen.  While you can fly thru some of say i80, it can be dangerous.   Roads have new exits and such that are not to spec.

The local population to where the driver lives apparantly does not have the market for a vet. So  it isnt a resource the community needs in that it would be financially viable.

The dog is replaceable- the pounds are FULL of unwanted dogs, and cats.

I wasnt happy when I got any of the 3 speeding tickets I had.  I had "reasons" too.  I was ticketed.  I paid the fine and took my points.

Cops do not exist to hand out roses.   The tune on some of this would change if YOUR property of person was marred by a speeder.
Heck people hardly move over for ambulances.... and emergency vehicles.  If the pet industry supported it- there would be helicopters for life flight for dogs.

driving is a "priviledge".   The speeder should pay his fine, go to the pound and get a new dog.  The cop ought
to be left to do his job.  He may have been tact-less, and cold- ..still he aint there to hand out roses.

First its a dog, next a human. That's how serial killers get their start, too.

kiwisub12 -> RE: “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/21/2008 1:31:10 PM)

This whole situation is a lose-lose situations.  No-one should be driving 95 miles an hour when they are emotionally distraut. Talk about a recipe for disaster!  And the sheer insensitivity of the cop is incredible.  He needs to go to sensitivity classes, and the driver needs to not get a ticket, but work some hours at the local animal shelter.

Sweetie, I'm not quite sure why you directed your barrage toward me, I was merely pointing out the inaccuracy of your statement that
"We all have gotten tickets.  Its the cost of driving."

But that's ok..... as long as you got it off your chest and feel all better now.

Bless your heart, you're having a terrible time with all this.

He didn't direct his post toward just you, it was commentary on the whole thread.

And 'we have all gotten a ticket' is just a figure of speech re: the driver in the OP story,  not an actual  statistic from the Department of Justice.[;)]

pahunkboy -> RE: “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/21/2008 2:50:06 PM)

mama D,   you post that you had no tix in 34 years....and say you did in fact  speed.

So you didnt get caught.

I hope you and all ARE a safe driver.  That is a good thing.

Signed-     axe murderer.   (according to some guys post...:-) )

Precisely.   (thank you)    (my posts can be hard to read,)

MamaDomme1 -> RE: “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/21/2008 3:00:20 PM)

Thanks guys-- I was getting worried there.

Yes, I am a safe driver, but not all are and it is very scary to see some of them.  And I am very aware that cops aren't out handing roses-- my now deceased hubby was in law enforcement for 16 years before dying as a result of an on-duty injury.  My baby brother has been in law enforcement since 1987, my father was in law enforcement.

My speeding during medical emergencies were due to my tiny son in cardiac arrest with conjestive heart failure..... and then again my kindergarten son's feet covered in 3rd degree burns from walking into covered up hot coals to retrieve a ball, and similar situations.  I lived out in the country, waiting for appropriate EMS would have meant death or worse injury.

Normally, I am not a speeder.  I really do try to be a law-abiding citizen and never wish to endanger another person's life with ignorance and stupid risks.

The only pain and discomfort I wish to bring on any person is the consensual pain in relation to BDSM activities.  ;)

I hope to hell you don't have any pets and never get any in the future. No pet is replacable. You may be able to get another animal, but it does not replace the one you had.

“Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives,”  Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
Lack of empathy towards animals is one of the halmarks they see in cases of abusive behaviour towards humans.

Second, a purebred dog is usually expensive. From http://www.poodlesbydesign.biz/PurchasingShippingPagerevised.htm
Teacups 3 - 4 lbs under 8"  $1,800 - $3,000*
The price of a puppy may be adjusted up or down based on gender, color, size, pedigree, and evaluation.
While some places sell teacups as low as $600, they're often not the highest quality dogs. In any case, the owners are out a chunk of change, as well as losing a beloved companion.

My personal feeling in this is that both people were in the wrong. The driver deserved a ticket. He was going too fast. I have been in that same situation with one of my cats and we drove about 75 in a 65 mph zone on a lightly trafficked five lane highway. We had people passing us. The life of your animal is precious, but you maintain a safe-for-conditions speed. The video shows the driver weaving before he was pulled over. He was not driving safely for conditions. As for him moving after he stopped the first time, listen to the video. The cop tells him to move off the bridge and on to a safer place. He didn't do it as an evasion tactic. I also feel that the officer deserves the censure and sensitivity training. His lack of empathy towards the dying animal and the humans in distress was appalling.  I do find it troubling that a person with the attitude of the cop is in a job with a position of public power. I'm thankful I've been lucky enough to never meet a police officer with that attitude.

I'm still wondering what they fed the dog....'cause if they gave it a chicken bone or something....well....it's their fault, not the cop's....even if he was a jerk.

It's possible the dog just got into something they didn't notice. Mine used to pick up weird crap all the time.

A friend had a dog who would try to eat rocks. It gnawed on them and ground his teeth down. They were constantly having to comb the yard to rid it of any stones or rocks he could chew. He several times swollowed one and had to go to the vet to have it removed. Another friend's dog ate a shoelace. I've heard of dogs swollowing needles, wedding rings, hair scrunchie, a rubber ball that stayed in the dog's stomach for over ten years (http://www.thepetcenter.com/xra/ball.html,) tooth brush and a 24 inch swiffer handle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sje-ZsVIrE)

I do have a house full of pets.  :-) 3 dogs, 1 parrot and some fish.

It is true that those who abuse animals will abuse humans.     Agreeing with the ticket, is not abusing an animal.    the {not} abusing of the animal could have harmed more then  the original party.   The man chose to speed- he got a ticket. That is life.   meanwhile  if the speed limit should be higher then make it higher.

Re: Post #27 by Thadius.

Now, see, we agree again! (People are beginning to talk...)

The guy was in the wrong speeding like that trying to get to the vet. But it was also wrong of the cop to DELIBERATELY hold them up, with the end result being the dog died.

Oh, and the earlier post (not by Thadius) that the cop must've been a "cat person." That was a little insulting. I AM a cat lover, and nothing about having those furballs in my life makes me any less sensative to other people's pets. I know it was meant as a joke, but that was just a downright slap in the face.

Briena -> RE: “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/21/2008 10:07:56 PM)

My fathers dog saved his life.  Rusty Bucket is his best friend and his roomate.  He even has special cook books made for dogs so he can cook his meals.  If Rusty was sick my dad would drive 100mph to save his life if thats what it took.  Wouldnt anyone do the same for someone who saved their life?  Return the favor?  I love my pets as if they were my children, and I would do whatever I could to save them.  The cop could have helped them but instead chose to linger and be a dick face, and it cost the dog its life.  It costs its owners heart ache.  I think an animals life is just as important as a persons life.  All life is sacred.  Animals are helpless, they cannot operate on themselves, or take their own medicine.  They rely on us for help and its our duty as pet owners and as human beings to care for them.  Thats just my thoughts though.

mastervalentine -> RE: “Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one.” (8/22/2008 3:57:55 AM)

*shrug* "Chill out, it's just a dog, you can buy another one. Good luck buying a new spine, or lung if you get into an accident at 95MPH."

Neither side is right. Both officer and driver could use a psychological evaluation. Of course, the same could be said of just about everyone in this country.
