It would sound like another chapter in the movie, "Weekend at Bernies".

That's bizarre.  What if he fell over?
I prefer wakes where the casket is closed and the place is filled with tons of photos of that person enjoying life.

Some of it is a cultural thing.

Being Eastern European myself I know a common tradition for us is to prop the dead guy up in the casket and take pictures with the corpse (and then of course get properly tanked).  Other countries go so far as to sit the corpse at the head of the table and party with it -- ancient Egypt had a custom called The Opening of the Mouth where they'd actually feed the corpse.

But I'm with what was said on this thread by a couple of people -- I don't want a sad weepy funeral.  In fact, fuck the funeral, just prop me up and have a party.  I guess because I believe in reincarnation so my theory on death is "WOOHOO!  Onto bigger and better things!"

~fast reply~ Borne and bred here in theMountains where people are clannish and some times strange as hell....When someone passes, the women set off to cooking and the men head for the local maker of mountain moonlight..Usual its a 3 day affair, a home wake because the local funeral homes frown upon the party and the liquid delights..Some times its rowdy as hell and the local barney fife stop by to pay their 'respects; lol..Me I am a believe that I shall come back in a brand new body trying to get it right the next time,I have been regressed many times and all ways have died a violent death either with a sword or gun in my hands, probably escaping  jealous husband smile...bounty

mastervalentine -> RE: ok, this creeped me out (8/20/2008 2:02:48 PM)

Psh, since I was eight I wanted a wake, and I wanted to come down on wires and dance an irish jig.

screw normalcy.

I thought it was kind of neat. It made me think of old wakes where the body remained in the parlor for a few days, people would travel to come and say goodbye.
Of course it wouldn't be suitable if it were an injury/accident death, but if I looked okay after death I think I'd like to be propped in a corner 'watching' the goings on.

ack.. we did that with my family... my Mimi ( Grandma) was the last one we did that with. Folks traveled from all over to come sit with us.. sitting with her... for 3 days.

3 days of no sleep, and your dearly departed laid out in your living room.

Freaking cremate me. If you put me in the ground.. I am comming back for ya. LOL

My mum said the same thing.. Smart woman.

As I told Greedy this week.. the dead dont bother me.. its the living that bug the shit out of me.

Lasciviouslady1 -> RE: ok, this creeped me out (8/21/2008 9:20:08 AM)

Wakes in general creep me out...I remember when my father died, and the people are all saying things like, "doesn't he look good?"...I wanted to scream "NO, he does NOT look good...he's fucking DEAD."  It would be much better as someone else posted...close the casket and have pictures of the person ENJOYING LIFE..smiling...Remember them that way..not looking dead.
JMO, I think wakes are a stupid custom....

housesub4you -> RE: ok, this creeped me out (8/21/2008 1:39:54 PM)

When I went to Greece for the first time to meet my wifes family, we went walking through the hills and came across a burial ground.  In Greece they don't "bury" their dead.  The remain above ground and then after 2 or so years, the family opens the casket to gather the bones and places them in a crept with all of the families bones going back a couple 1000 years.

Yeeesh.............glad we got married before I learned that.

Hey let's not forget good old Jeremy Bentham.  I saw this on on Ripley's once.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Bentham
"As requested in his will, his body was preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet, termed his "Auto-icon". Originally kept by his disciple Dr. Southwood Smith,[12] it was acquired by University College London in 1850. The Auto-icon is kept on public display at the end of the South Cloisters in the main building of the College. For the 100th and 150th anniversaries of the college, the Auto-icon was brought to the meeting of the College Council, where he was listed as "present but not voting".[13] Tradition holds that if the council's vote on any motion is tied, the auto-icon always breaks the tie by voting in favour of the motion. The Auto-icon has always had a wax head, as Bentham's head was badly damaged in the preservation process. The real head was displayed in the same case for many years, but became the target of repeated student pranks including being stolen on more than one occasion. It is now locked away securely."

Irishknight -> RE: ok, this creeped me out (8/25/2008 4:09:33 PM)

I wouldn't mind a wake as long as they made certain that I had a stiffy.  If its a party, I should have a hard on.  That way everyone can go "He looks so lifelike."

GreedyTop -> RE: ok, this creeped me out (8/25/2008 4:11:26 PM)
