beargonewild -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 1:24:38 PM)

The majority of the time, it's the nature of a topic which will compel me to follow a particular post topic and read it through. Depending how strong a specific topic resonates will determine my reply if I do feel strong enough to voice my thoughts. The other factor is the person who started a topic. Usually if it is from a person whom I respect, then yes I am quite curious to read what they have to say, even if I happen to disagree with their opinion.

heartcream -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 1:48:38 PM)

I go by my instincts alot of the time, not really knowing what is in the thread. Following someone around might lead me somewhere else. Like others, I have fave posters-wish some of them would post more-and I miss domiguy's posts.

Like, LaT I enjoy the different pov's and learn heaps from a lot of you.

I love the humor, warmth, consciousness, writing styles, and personna's around here.

If I see a thread is started by a poster I admire I will definitely read it. Sometimes the topic or my mood draws me in. Sometimes the drama is fun and other times simply painful.

ExSteelAgain -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 1:59:41 PM)

Sure, the poster. I'll read any post LA starts although she is much younger than I am. I don't necessarily agree with her posts, especially when she is critical of me, ha, but I do learn from her logic. Bascially, I look for smart posters to read what's on their minds.

kallisto -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 2:02:38 PM)

The title of the post and the poster.   (Like this one for instance) [:)]   There are several posters on here that I enjoy reading their thoughts and opinions very much.

badlilthang -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 2:08:24 PM)

topic - and who is posting...some things i have heard a million times before - and some things are new, interesting and something i am very curious about.i read a lot of posts - i do not post that often, because i do not need to comment on everything - or people have already said what i was thinking. No need to repeat, then...i have come to enjoy a few people posting here on the boards. Smart and fun to read, and also with a great deal of knowledge on the various subjects. No need to name names, i just enjoy reading what they have to say - and have a hope that some of what i might toss in also is worth listening to...*s*

catize -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 2:26:27 PM)

I browse, scanning until something or someone catches my interest.
There are some posts I read and can only conclude I did so because I needed an emotional masochism fix.  ~grins~

UR2Badored -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 2:46:55 PM)

After a little more thought, as I attracted I am to the posters I do enjoy.  I am just as likely to perve threads of posters I least agree with--those are the most enjoyable for some reason.

akisha -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 2:47:05 PM)

First off the title, then i scan the OP and if it's intersting I'll continue, if not I skip it.

MasterFireMaam -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 3:50:49 PM)

What attracts me is the question. I don't really keep up with who posts what or where. This is why I'm not LA and can't often say, "Hey, weren't you just owned last week and not the week before? Why are you complaining that you're unowned again?"

I'm getting to the point where most of the 'done' questions hold no appeal; there's plenty of others who can answer and they don't need me.

I enjoy questions I find thought provoking...or ones that can help people self develop. And then, of course, there are these which are purely opinion.

It might be bad of me, but I rarely read what other people have written any more, if I feel led to answer. I used to do that more when whatever system it is that screwing up was behaving and sending me my notifications properly. I was much more diligent when I read the responses as they came in. Now, it's often just too much to read three pages worth of replies for each question. If I want to see if anyone has answered me, I have to go and search for my posts and check each one. Pain in the ass!

So, there's what's up with me and posts. ;-)

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 4:14:53 PM)

A sincere question that resonates.

yourMissTress -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 4:33:25 PM)

Thank you, KoM, and good question.

I look first for the topic then the OP.  If the OP is someone that I have learned anything at all from, I read their post (like this one) and if the topic grabs me, I read the rest.  Otherwise I scan the replies for other posters that I feel put thought and sincerity into their posts.

If I see that the OP is someone I don't recognize, I read what they have to say and reply based on either how serious, dramatic, or ridiculous I feel they are, and what is my whim at that moment.  Some of the trainwrecks draw my attention for just that reason, I love blood and gore type drama, as long as it's not active in my life.

There are so many posters here that have wonderful, insightful and intelligent things to say, I couldn't possibly name them all, but you and yours are definitely among them.

gobsmack -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 4:33:30 PM)

The title and preview that pops up when mousing over it. If there are a lot of replies, I'll pop in to see what all the fuss is about.

I find that I am getting drawn to threads that have these quality people posting in.  There is so much to this lifestyle .. and I find that if all I did was read what interested me... I wouldn't really be opening myself to new ideas only to ideas that would validate my own opinions.  So.. I watch the people that I feel are quality individuals more than I am actually watching for things that interest me....

Back in 2005 and maybe into 2006, the boards seemed *to me* to be *dominated* by highly 'intellectual', highly 'experienced' D/s types, most of whom have long since departed.  It seemed *to me* most regular posters on the boards in 2005 knew who these 'dominant' members were and for the most part, shared my respect for them/what they wrote. Those that remain, like Lam and IronBear, no longer seem *to me* to occupy the same sort of 'dominant' position they once did, as a function of the fact that they no longer post *as much as it seems to me* they once did.  Doubtless because they have much more important things to do.

In the main *I* no longer see people of this ilk 'dominating' the boards.  That is, they no longer seem to be posting the most Ops, among other things.  Perhaps I entered during a crescendo the boards were experiencing.  Perhaps the members *I* recall only seemed to me to dominate because *I* felt I took away so much from reading their posts.  Perhaps *I* merely miss members I had come to admire who are no longer here.

When I first joined the boards, these 'domineering types' posted about everything and anything.  Lam was notorious -- and may still be -- for his ability to demonstrate a depth of knowledge about even the most arcane of subjects.  Most of the others *I* group together with Lam circa 2005 weren't far behind him in that respect.  *I* think you’d be hard-pressed to find a ‘single noun’ search that generated no results dating back to this period, but possibly that too is a flawed perception.

Additionally, these members posted about D/s.  And here *I* do see a difference between then and now.  First, those who habituate General BDSM, and to a lesser extent some of the other D/s boards, do not IN GENERAL speak *to me* with the same depth of knowledge of human interaction the old powerhouses did.  The old members demonstrated in their posts a depth of experience of D/s -- not as 'play', 'a lifestyle' or the benighted 'WIITWD' -- but as a well-integrated part of their essential selves and their lives, the lives of those with whom they partnered, etc. -- that *I* no longer see very often.  They *seemed to me* to be ‘educators’ in the best possible sense of the word, provoking 'aha!' moments in many readers that went to core issues.

Stray Thoughts, Off-Topics, Post No 1.  An excerpt, author candystripper.

It would appear we agree, KOM.

Who'd a thunk it?  LOL.

BTW, what's this Op & thread doing in 'General BDSM'?  Shouldn't it be in 'Off-Topics'?  Just curious.

sub4hire -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 4:58:05 PM)

Something that I haven't seen discussed to death since I've been on BDSM boards.  Generally it is the title...I open it.
If its interesting I read and respond.  Most of the time I just read.  Take a mental note if I ever want to refer back and search for the thread again.

TysGalilah -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 5:05:21 PM)

 A clever thread title
 A topic that interests me
A particular person is the OP and I enjoy their perspectives and so will peek in
There are a handful of posters, and if I see that they have responded to a post> I will look into the thread to see what caught their eye and what they added.

StormsSlave -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 5:05:31 PM)

Various different things. Often the OP, sometimes the title, sometimes the subject. There are certain people I read because of who they are, but mostly I try to keep an open mind about people.

I don't read certain people's posts. shrug. Just not interested in drama. I am interested in thoughts, ideas, and concepts. I'm interested in learning, stretching my brain, and maybe learning that I am comfortable being how and who I am.

So... what some of the things that attract you to the various threads?

1.  The topic.  I don't have the time or the desire to read everything posted here.  If it's something that has been "done to death," I usually skip it.  If it's something that causes me to think and introspect a bit, I'll usually dive in and read some of the posts on the first page.  If it hasn't intrigued me by then, I don't continue.  I'll post if it's something I actually know something about or if it's a subject I feel strongly about one way or the other.  If I feel I can contribute something, I try to.  As far as posting on every single question, again I don't have the time or desire and, frankly, no one knows something about everything.  Sometimes it's better to listen rather than talk.

2.  The other posters.  I hestiate to use the term "quality people" because I don't really know a thing about 99% of the people here and what their "quality" as a person is.  I do tend to read certain posters who do actually have something to contribute, in my opinion.  Frankly, it has nothing to do with how many posts they have or how long they've been around or how popular they are to the posting public at large.  "Quality" to me is defined as the clarity and open-mindedness a poster exhibits, not how many people jump on their bandwagon or how well-known they are.  Even if I disagree with their viewpoint, I like a post where someone can really explain what they feel and why they feel it while still respecting others who differ.

3.  What I DON'T read is all the silly nonsense where it's just a bunch of giggling and flirting and rambling.  Not nearly enough time in the day to waste sifting through that.

NuevaVida -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 5:46:20 PM)

What luci said - all three points.

If a title is of interest, I'll open it.  If the OP or other posters are people whose opinions I respect (whether or not I agree with them), I'll read through it, because I know I can gain insight and hopefully I might have something worthwhile to offer.

I skip through the flirting and goofing off, for the most part.

DesFIP -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 5:54:02 PM)

I'm interested in relationships, how they work, especially how to improve them.
I tend to skip technical threads except for a safety comment.

Jeffff -> RE: what draws you to a Thread? (8/20/2008 5:59:55 PM)

Anything out of the ordinary draws me. How many times can you answer the question," how do I find a real _______" before ya wanna puke?
