bipolarber -> McCain supports return to draft? (8/20/2008 5:50:03 PM)

It was just an off comment, where McCain agreed with a woman in the audiance in one of his Q&A's, but he said that he agreed with her that the US needs to bring the draft back. This, as far as I can tell, is the first time the candidate has said this.Out loud.(Not that it's too difficult to figure out what he'd have to do, in order to fight his war with Iran, and with Moscow, and continue the Iraq war "until we achieve victory" sometime in the next 100 years.)

Personally, I really don't care, I'm past draft age, and have been out of the running anyway, since I'm diabetic... but for those of you who are potential IED fodder... or have kids who are... how do you feel about this?

Just askin'...

Pretty bloody stupid really. It's like taking all the troops we have and saying "You're not good enough so we're forcing others in"..Actually that is what's saying. I'd let them take me to the draft. Wait, I'm diagnosed bipolar, is that going to work?

McCain wants to go back and redo Vietnam. Iraq et al is his chance.

Reminds me of the senile great-grandparent who thinks you're your uncle---but much more dangerous.

Sanity.. guess what? Not everything happens on the fucking net. Turn on a TV and watch the repeat of "Countdown" Otherwise the clip reporting this will show up in a few hours on the MSNBC website. But trust me, THIS gaffe is going to have legs... especially since McCain's campaign has not issued any kind of "clarification" on the candidates position.

I can tell you where he got that from. The Huffington Post, it was one of their headline stories today.  They also had a story about McCain not being tortured, and that his wife lied about the adoption of their daughter.

bipolarber -> RE: McCain supports return to draft? (8/20/2008 6:10:30 PM)

Nope. Don't read Huffington. I was watching the video. It's on Countdown again in less than an hour. But I'm not surprised that this one's spreading through the news cycle.

You are not suggesting that Countdown is an unbiased source are you?  Most of his talking points come straight from the Huff post and Daily Kos.

I wonder why it got snipped almost as soon as McCain started to speak... this isn't being taken out of context or anything, is it?

I'm not sure what "I agree with everything you said" can be made out-of-context.

Besides, I find most Mc Cain supporters adore his ability to address complex issues with 6 word answers or less.

Nope, he switched gears and didn't touch the topic again.

For a direct answer on how McCain feels about the draft.

McCain said: "I don't know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III."
"I do not believe the draft is even practicable or desirable," McCain said.

MmeGigs -> RE: McCain supports return to draft? (8/20/2008 6:59:03 PM)

Conscription is a hell of a lot cheaper than outsourcing, but not anywhere near as politically palatable.  I think that if we as a country are fighting a war, we have to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices to do the job properly.  If that means a draft, that's what it means.  If it means higher taxes or rationing of vital resources, that's what it means.  If the administration can't make a good enough case for war that we-the-people are willing to put some skin in the game, we shouldn't be going to war.  As Abraham Lincoln said - "I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts."

MissSCD -> RE: McCain supports return to draft? (8/20/2008 7:04:13 PM)

You all will not like me.  I am former military.  It developed a skill in my mind that I can never regret.  I am proud of every minute I served.
I believe that everyone in the US should serve a mininum of two years active duty both male and female.
We don't need the draft.
We had to use it in Vietnam when we had 2,000 soldiers per day getting killed in a ground war.
Do I believe in the war?  no.  I believe in the troops.

So true Thadius...so true. McCain will be exposed as four times the flip-flopper Kerry ever was. I have Republican Party Leaders in my hometown who won't lift a finger for him, cause they know him as a consumate opportunist of the worst kind. This will be and has been revealed, as he says whatever he thinks gets him votes at the time. Forget consistency!

McCain / Lieberman would be the ultimate example of this.

STAY TUNED!

For men...ideal.

I too am too old (I'm 974 years old now...but everyone tells me I don't look a day over 371).

Men need to learn to fight.  It's what men do.  And...we're missing something on the "corporate" level.  Men, in any country....need to learn how to protect.  We currently have a generation (with some exceptions) who don't know how to protect the things that are valuable...to society.

Our women.

That same generation were / was raised by "MASH", and other TV shows that insisted we as men become more 'sensitive".

No woman wants that (they'll claim they do)...and when a man comes along who can brush aside conflict simply by the wave of a hand....they'll flock to him.

"Bad boy" stuff.

Yes...I support the draft, a national "service"...something that teaches men how to behave like men.

Treating women like the Princesses they are...but capable of protecting them...solely because they are royalty.

Nonsense.
At no point in the Vietnam war did the enemy inflict 2,000 deaths a day on US troops...

You are simply making up exaggerations that discredit those who fought over there.
