There are some things that will NEVER go out of style, which is usually what I aim for in my wardrobe as much as possible -- until Rockafeller sends me my check, I have to make stuff last! You want to go for things that are more of a timeless style. The structured jackets I spoke about previously are a good example of this. If you can find a cute tailored-looking denim jacket, combining it with a pair of well-fitting slacks (typically a straight-leg style is the best since it's flattering on everyone), a solid-colored top, and a pair of kitten heels, you're set to look good for quite some time. The important thing to remember is not to match denim to denim, and matching accessories all the way around is just poor taste -- i.e. matching plaid shoes and handbag.
As far as skirts go, A-line skirts will never go out of style. High-waisted skirts have come back in fashion but I'm skeptical of how long they're going to hang around. Look for something that sits properly at your waist. "Swishy" skirts that will flutter around your legs as you walk also have a tendency to make them look long and gorgeous, just remember that you're looking for at-the-knee length. Calf-length skirts are tricky to pull off unless you're tall, otherwise they tend to make those of us who are height-challenged look stumpy as heck.
Do some research. Notice what clothing items are constantly available in the stores, and then narrow it down from there with common sense. For instance, stretchy pants are still available pretty much everywhere, but come on now.  The prints and colors may change but the structure and style will remain constant. You can get away with wearing fairly conservative prints and colors and then jazz it up with funky necklaces or other accessories, since they're so cheap in most cases if they do go out of fashion you can just chuck them or put them away for when they inevitably do come back into style.
Shoes-wise, by the way, that kitten heel I was mentioning is AMAZING. It's classy, it still makes your legs look sexy, is comfortable enough to walk around and run errands in, and if you're not used to wearing heels they're a great compromise. Classic pumps are pretty much a safe bet as well. My favorite thing to do is go to Wet Seal and pick up one of every color of pumps they sell there. They hold together about as well as a pair of shoes from Payless would, they come in literally every color of the rainbow so you have NO problem matching them with outfits, and they're dirt cheap. Sometimes you can get them on sale 2 pair for $20!
It's hard to explain without pictorials! But a good rule of thumb is, if you walk into a store and look at a new arrival and say "Who the Hell would wear THAT?!" it's probably not considered timeless and is probably just one of those of-the-moment fashion trends. Honestly as much as I love the 80s throwback stuff going on now, I have an inkling it's going to be on its way back out very soon. I also do recommend checking out What Not to Wear on TLC even though I don't find the hosts nearly as charming as the BBC version, as they deal mostly in those elusive classic looks that look good on everyone. Except ignore the prices they quote for the stuff because if you're a smart shopper you can get basically the exact same outfit for a quarter of the price.
