BlackPhx -> Eight Crazy E-Mail Hoaxes Millions Have Fallen For (8/22/2008 8:33:09 AM)

I noticed several questions recently about virus' and email hoaxes and figured I would repost something I posted to another list.

Everyone has gotten them in their email, and no one wants to think they or someone they love will fall for them. trust me..people do, daily. My ex did and ended up owing his bank a lot of money in bounced check fees, when the check proved fraudulent. Amazingly he forgot everything I ever taught him about scams, hoaxes ddn virus's after I left. These are just a few of the more common ones..

If you recieve email and are not sure if it is a hoax, or Virus (please say you have a virus checker and keep it up todate) you can check it out at the following places before opening:
http://www.scambusters.com/
http://www.emailhoaxesurbanlegends.com/
http://antivirus.about.com/od/emailhoaxes/l/blenhoax.htm
ttp://www.snopes.com/info/search/search.asp

It also helps if you use a program from reading email that doesn't automatically download pictures, macros etc. One that I use regularly is Forte Inc Agent, they have a Free version and a paid one and both handle multiple email addresses and Usenet groups. http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

Online virus scanners are also good to have in your arsenal against those who want into your computer.
Panda http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/?
Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
and
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
are excellent places to start. If you don't have a Virus Checker AVG puts out a very good one

Noticed your computer slowing down ? Remove and Keep spyware out of your computer with
Spybot http://www.spybot.info/index2.html

She is getting to see all of Florida... they are saying that she may be headed for a 4th landfall up in the panhandle.

Well, almost all of Florida. She seems to have forgotten the Tampa Bay area to this point (notwithstanding the part of the panhandle that she's moving towards)... lucky people. ;-)

LOL we are doing fine... the skies for once are not trying to drown us and the dogs have gone out for the first time since Tuesday and cleared bowels. Never be cuaght inside with a 150 lb akita with a full bowel..the gas is against the Geneva Convention. They were running out, draining bladders and running back. Fay is working her way Northwest.. but am not sure she is not going to make a round trip, she seems to have been waiting to see a shuttle launch or something.

Oh and GT? Blackphx says for you to stop sending Fay this way when I am scooting her back your way [:D] he wants to actually land in Orlando tonight.

My family used to joke that Tampa Bay was protected from direct hits by Indian magic.  [:D]  And it's true, wasn't Elena in '85 the last real bullseye?  Good to hear that the area's safe though since my family's still down there...

Also, adding a good on-access scanner to the list: Avast! Antivirus.  It is... FANTASTIC.  And it's free, so hey, ultimate win right there.
