Pelosi Threatens Senator For Criticizing Obama

How does the Speaker of the House of Representatives get to tell Senators what committees they can and can't sit on?

Pelosi explained that Senate Democrats are leery of challenging Lieberman over his comments because his vote is crucial to preserving the Democrats' 51-49 majority in the Senate. But she warned that Lieberman's top spot on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee could be in jeopardy if Democrats gain seats in the Senate in November.

"The Democrats in the Senate are in a tough spot. They have 51 votes. Joe Lieberman organizes with them," she said. "In 85 days or something, they will have five more Democrats. They won't need him to make the majority. And it will be interesting to see what the leadership in the Senate, the Democratic leadership in the Senate, does at that point in terms of Joe Lieberman's chairmanship of his committee."

Doesn't sound as though Pelosi thought she, as Speaker, has the power.. but rather that the Senate has such power which is accurate.

True enough. I'll rephrase:

Where does the Speaker of the House get off making such comments about a member of the US Senate? That's not her side of the Capitol building.

Well, I suppose that I think a bit differently. As a US Citizen, she has the 'right' to make any comments to anyone she likes. The House and Senate belong to 'all' of us. Then again, I have no problem with Lieberman making his comments either. I just file everything away until it comes time to pull the lever, or.. you know, push the button, punch the card etc.

Not that different than replacing that elected delegate, because she refused to cast a vote for Obama...

Pelosi and Reid are joined at the hip (well almost), so it wouldn't be out of the realm to think she was just laying out this warning, to let Lieberman know.

I don't want to get into bashing the party. I will just say that it is very likely that they are not going to have Lieberman's vote next session anyways.

Sounds like she... like many of us are tired of the repugnicans childish games. Lieberman has struck-out in his political life and he's too despirate to understand he's being used. They'll toss him aside when the get their way. Rather sad really

I don't have a problem with her making comments, but threats are different. The right to make the comment that someone else doesn't have the right to make a comment, doesn't make a lot of sense.

Well, Lieberman won re-election as a Senator running as an Independent after the Democrats bailed on him in the primaries....so I'm not sure how you define striking out.

As for Lieberman being used and tossed aside...are you saying the Republicans are going to win or that Lieberman is some sort of stalking horse for the Democrats?

They sure as hell aren't gonna listen to me.

My personal opinion is that if there were more Senators like Lieberman, perhaps more would get done. Somebody willing to go against the party line, to get things done seems like it would be a good thing.

I personally don't give credit to anything Pelosi has to say or where she stands on issues.

In 2004 she had a strong preference for more international involvement in Iraq, but by 2005 Pelosi's outlook had shifted dramatically. Can we say Flip Flopper!

Pelosi and other Democrats must mold their positions to the voters.

Pelosi's conflicting statements show that she or other Democraps "don't have a problem saying one thing and doing another."

Hence the reason I did not vote for John Kerry Heinz. I don't care much for flip floppers!

You are taking one thing I said and turning it around.

I was basically stating that I don't take what she says at face value, because in a year it will be something else.

Then again... most politicans (Republican and Democrats) change their views / stands once they are elected into office.
