ORIGINAL: Effeminate I wasn't sure if you are supposed to balance your feet at the heel, and take strides, or balance near the toes and take small steps? Small steps are best -- long strides with weight on the heel can snap some of the thinner heels and lead to you falling on your arse! Just remember that you're in no rush to get where you're walking to in heels. Stand up tall and let them get a good look while you walk past. Of course you shouldn't be going completely at a snail's pace, either. As you get more used to wearing heels you'll eventually be able to take longer strides, or do the Charlie's Angel run. As far as the different types of heels, you have kitten heels which tend to be lower (probably about an inch) but are the same width as a regular pair of pumps, though they're set further in on the heel of the shoe rather than dropping down from the back. I find they tend to distribute the weight a lot better and are ideal for running errands or going about town. They're cute and flirty, yet practical. Stilettos are the super-skinny heels that are about the width of a pencil. A cheap pair can snap on you, though, so be careful -- they're also a bit more difficult to balance in. I refer to these as "fuck-me shoes" since they've got a really seductive look to them. Of course you've also got your regular pump-style heels which are your classic femme look, and the big super-chunky heels which... meh, I don't really care for. They look too clunky in most cases, so really use your judgement. You don't want to look like you're wearing Frankenstein's boots! When figuring out the exact height of a pair of heels take into consideration whether or not there's any kind of "platform" under the toe area. For example, I have a cute pair that are listed as a four-inch heel, but there's about an inch's worth of sole underneath the toes, serving as a platform. Therefore subtract that inch from the total height of four inches and you're actually only walking in three inches. Some heels can be uncomfortable and have pressure points which will cause painful blisters. You can combat this by getting some of the moleskin pads that they sell at drug stores and hiding them inside the shoe on those pressure-causing areas. The worst areas I've found are at the back of the heel right over the Achilles' tendon and over my pinky toe, so that's typically where I put the moleskin pads on mine. It may vary based on your foot structure, though. God, I should not know so much about shoes.
