I have been totally into the olympics this year, and today is of course the closing ceremony which I cant wait for (especiallty the hand over) I thought now would be a good time to ask, what were your fave moments? Worst moments? What issues have they thrown into the air (in England it seems we are very focused on the nature of buying our medals and all that stuff)

I read an article recently saying that its such a short contest with so much money pumped into it which is a waste, and then i read a statistic, people's lives are made better by the small things, being told you look nice, a sunny day when rain was expected and feeling national pride (something most of great britian must be feeling now) these things make people more happy than how much money they earn. Ive gotta say that the last two weeka have been me screaming, crying, shouting, laughing and cheering, sure bad things are happening in the rest of the world, they always will be I dont feel bad about the fact that I have enjoyed their absence in the news for the last two weeks, and from tommorow it will be back to harsh reality.

I liked the diving: a wonderful metaphore for life. You start up high, go down fast, and end up in a splash.

Precisely :-). How've you been, cdin :-) ? I can't believe you've done nothing but watch the Olympics all this time (how did Britain do? All I saw here were USA/China competitions - as if the rest of the world didn't exist *sigh*).

we did really really well, especially the cycling rowing and sailing the most golds for 100 years, pretty bloody impressive, 4th in the medal table (above Aus WO HO)

Glad to see Britain did well: what's important is to win without looking like you're trying too hard. I know we're good at that  .

PS: edited, because my syntax sucks.

I hear in the US they list the medal tables by total number of medals so that they come ahead of China.

As long as the people are happy, that's all that matters  .

I'm wondering who will get the gold metal for cheating. Greece is currently ahead, which is almost funny ... I'm sure China and Jamaca will fight it out for the title ... but they better watch out for the USA, who may make a late push as more advanced testing becomes available.

Drugs cheating is a real problem not just because it gives people an unfair advantage but also because people begin to assume everyone that wins is cheating in some way.

I'd rather give people the benefit of the doubt until they are caught.

Yep yep yep. I just wish the sports world would stop being so bloody stubborn, and started admitting that doping is widespread because it's necessary - without it, I don't think many modern world records would exist at all.

Only 6 people were thrown out for doping in the games (two from the ukraine) so though its still a problem not as huge as you would think, and bolt was amazing without drugs (as was phelps but i still dont reckon it was 8 golds but whatever)

Ahhh yes, the Olympics... where the long tradition of rampant and blatant cheating, poor sportsmanship, and politics is a good thing as long as it is done in the name of jingoism and nationalistic fervor.

its so interesting what differant people get out of it, see i remember the rowers coming out of the water and hugging each other, i remember watching interviews with people who performed the best that they ever have and people who have got to the games despite real adversity, I remember watching people cry when they recieived their gold medal and cry in joy that they got to 23rd place, yeah you are right bloody terrible thing to watch

Plenty of athletes manage to perform and win without the use of drugs. I thought I had heard some really stupid excuses for why someone had to cheat, but this one wins the prize.

It's not an excuse, baby, it's a fact. Athletes get doped up, because they need to: time to get over the delusion that it's all in the name of fair play and good sportsmanship.
