No worries, I am usually pretty detailed in my writing, or at least I try not to leave any doubt about my points.  A very interesting experiment, if I do say so myself.

Great article, I read it in the Boston Globe. Embarrassing question: who are these fundies you speak of?

Dont know about Flordia but here in NY, school board members get elected, you can have an IQ lower than your shoe size and they will decide what is good for your kids...
So you can have a raging ass have marxist a-hole or an  ultra conservative fascist bible thumper dictate the policy in your school...

Basically any body in the neighborhood can run to be a school board memeber.

Like that could ever happen here!  [sm=pillowfight.gif]

Please clarify, because the last thing we need is an argument between people who might actually agree but chose the wrong word here and there, or whatever.

Fundamentalists were an evangelical sect in the early 1900s US, teaching Biblical inerrancy. Not all of their ideas were intolerant.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_fundamentalists

Since that time the current usage has come to mean intolerant groups within any religion who attempt to force blind faith in religious doctrine onto others.

A current tactic of the American fundie movement (mirrored in other segments of the realm of intolerance) is to adopt pseudo-intellectual trappings and pretend to 'debate' their case, co-opting terms and assigning their own meanings to them, as in the creationism = 'critical thinking' or the '10 Questions' examples given above.

I'll second that!  Knowledge has always been the enemy of the church.  If not for religion and Xtianity, we would have had a man on the moon by the year 700.

But the truth always prevails, even after 1200 years of supression.

If not for religion and Christianity? Christianity is a religion. That does not even make sense.

Edited to add, and what is with the X......Are you afraid you will spell it wrong and people will make fun of you or maybe you think if you type the word, you will become one or your just to lazy to spell it out? I never understood this concept.

Thank god someone replied to that I was still trying to work out how to pronounce Xtianity, thinking it might be a close descendant of the
Xylophone.

I think my signature line says it all, at least in my opinion it does.

"We would be 1500 years ahead if it hadn't been for the church dragging science back by its coattails and burning our best minds at the stake."

I have never found that sitting around wondering what would have happened if....or where would I be if.....ever got me anywhere. I prefer to concentrate on where I  am going and what I can do now.

bondagelover1950 -> RE: Evolution Instruction in FL (8/25/2008 8:54:08 AM)

Part of the problim is that while schools teach the theory of evolution they tend to forget the operative in the title. THEORY!!! It is a way things "might" have origanted. In all my reading I have never seen anywhere that this theory has been PROVEN as the way things came into being. Many people, myself included, want to see it taught as a THEORY, to present possible alternative theories and have the kids taught to look critically at things and ask questions instead of taking it on blind faith simply because some authority figure says it is so.

In Science, "theory" has a very specific meaning, and it isn't what you seem to think it is.

Since I support reality-based education, I'll even help you out here.

"According to the United States National Academy of Sciences,

Some scientific explanations are so well established that no new evidence is likely to alter them. The explanation becomes a scientific theory. In everyday language a theory means a hunch or speculation. Not so in science. In science, the word theory refers to a comprehensive explanation of an important feature of nature that is supported by many facts gathered over time. Theories also allow scientists to make predictions about as yet unobserved phenomena.[1]"

If you have intellectual integrity, you will admit that 1)the word theory, in science, is not an antonym of "fact", and 2)now that you know this, accept that there is no other evidence-based explanation for life as it now exists.

Raechard -> RE: Evolution Instruction in FL (8/25/2008 9:12:03 AM)

Of course it’s theory because there are few facts in science, that’s the whole point and the key difference between science and religious dogma. The reason this theory is so widely accepted as the best explanation is because this theory is backed up with evidence showing how creatures have adapted to changing environments through fossilised records. Bible theory has no equivalent to that so should not even be considered as an alternative theory to evolution in my opinion.

You can only say a lecturer of any subject is wrong if you can propose a better model that suits the evidence around us and creationism doesn't do that. Yes people should always question those who are an authority on a subject but only with evidence lead study not by simply saying you’re wrong.

Why walk on eggshells protecting that which has been proven time and time again to be wrong?

Termyn8or -> RE: Evolution Instruction in FL (8/25/2008 12:48:51 PM)

HK, I am now wondering what phase of the moon we are in. I agree. It was either you or you et alii that schooled me about the word theory. What the creationists and Darwinists have are suppositions or assertations. It's called a theory when it is accepted. How can we accept either without any evidence ?

We also have alot of post hoc ergo propter hoc going on, that is that much of the proof presented is not proof of the point at all. The Bible thumpers point to the Bible to prove points in guess what ? The Bible. The Darwinists similarly see everything in the world as proof of their "theory".

I have seen the anus of humanity. I know it in myself. Religious "leaders" do anything to prove their point, and use any means to prove that they are right and that everyone should join their church, and give.

Some of them shroud their greed, even from themselves. The religious types have always done it. One said (I think) that the scientific community is now doing it as well. The drug companies certainly are. That or they think they are fooling everyone. Now those who hold the purse strings of the research funding have their way. New sciences will not be discovered, and new technologies will not be invented until they are good and ready.

As a race, the human race, we have not done well.

How much evidence supporting the theory of evolution would you like? My expertise is primarily in paleontology but I can walk you through the basic genetic and biochemical evidence as well. I can point you to some pretty good explanations of the evo-devo and epigenetic evidence and can explain the truly basic material there but can't go much past that.

Raechard -> RE: Evolution Instruction in FL (8/25/2008 1:16:51 PM)

Isn't Xian in the matrix if so Xian is therefore made up by computers and doesn't exist in reality since no human from the Matrix knows what the world was like before the fabricated representation of the world.

Wow the Christians must have grown in strength pretty damn fast to have stopped that. Man on the Moon by the year 700 you say.  I didn't realize they had gotten that powerful, that fast.
