AAkasha -> Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/24/2008 8:28:20 PM)

If you are casual friends with someone (you know where they live and have been there before, but you are not close friends), is it considered rude to just show up to say hi? Should you call first?

If someone showed up at your door because they were in the neighborhood, and you were not expecting them, would you invite them in or not?

Have you ever dropped in on someone without talking to them ahead of time?

I prefer that ANYONE calls first..

especially with my totally whacked work schedule.. I may be sleeping.

I always call first.

I always make arrangements first.

And you do NOT want to drop by my place without asking first-I see it as assuming, and I will bite your bloody head off for doing that.

I think it's rude if they don't call.  Especially when almost everyone is walking around with a cell phone.  I've found myself unexpectedly in the neighborhood of friends, called them, but they said they were 'busy'.  No big deal if they were or weren't as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, its considered rude.

I feel it is always proper to call ahead and make sure "dropping in" would be welcome and at an appropriate time.  Were someone to show up at my place unannounced it would depend on who they were and what I was doing at the time as to wether or not I would invite them in.  I do have one friend who is welcomed at anytime day or night unannounced and I'm sure it would be the same were I to unexpectedly drop in on her.  But she is the exception to the rule where I am concerned.

People just absolutley love it when you knock on the door in the middle of buttfucking thier tied up girlfriend.

I perfer a phone call but I don't consider a drop by to be rude. Circumstances are considered with every knock at my door.

Vendaval -> RE: Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/24/2008 8:55:40 PM)

Given the fact that my home is "clothing-optional" and has exposed wooden beams, they may be in for a few surprises.

Calling ahead is a good plan unless you have a standing invitation.

I prefer people call before dropping by.  I tend to be scantily clad and hate having somone banging on the door while im dancing around to 80s music in my undies, or something.  I know I am welcome at some friends homes unannounced day or night, but I still prefer to call in case they are in the middle of sexy times.  Nothing worse than gettin your groove on, and having to answer the door...

SoulPiercer -> RE: Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/24/2008 9:02:24 PM)

I don't consider it rude. Everyone I know is welcome to drop by anytime they wish. Will I open the door? Most likely not.

MissIsis -> RE: Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/24/2008 9:20:49 PM)

It depends.  If they know me well enough to just drop in without me expecting them, I would hope they would make themselves at home, & let me get on with whatever it was I was doing, without thinking I was being rude, even if it was only napping.

Termyn8or -> RE: Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/24/2008 9:29:50 PM)

It depends. If someone lives far away and takes a chance because they happen to be in the neighborhood, that's OK. Neighbors, I can send them home without having them waste a long trip.  Once in a while it's OK, but I really mean once in a while.

The situation here is thus : I live upstairs and I refuse to fix the doorbell. If you show up, and the downstairs doorknob doesn't turn I am probably not home. If it does turn but the door will not open I am home but I am sleeping or busy. That's when the deadbolt is locked.

If you wake me banging on the door you better have something to say.

Myself, I almost always call first. I do very little business with friends, so any type of emergency is very unlikely. And if I am far away from home and happen to realize that a friend lives nearby I actually might stop by, this is rare and I accept rejection well at that point because I know very well that I was not expected. So if you're busy I will just move along and call you some other day.

I agree with just about all of the above answers.
In this day and age of cell phones, IF I decide to just "drop by",
because I am in the neighborhood, guess what I do?

I sit right out front of your home and call you, from in my car!
If you answer and say okay, I will knock on your door.

If you don't answer?
I normally will leave a message and keep on truckin!

I prefer some notice first, as I really dislike drop-ins.  But I've had it happen many times, and I'm always polite and invite them in, offer tea, whatever.

No, I've never dropped in on anyone myself.

gobsmack -> RE: Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/24/2008 10:05:53 PM)

They should call first. I stay up all night, so I'm usually sleeping during the day. If the place isn't on fire, I'm not getting up.

NuevaVida -> RE: Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/24/2008 10:58:10 PM)

It's never been an issue for me.  My friends & family have cell phones.  If they're in the neighborhood, they call and see if they can drop on by and I usually say yes.  I've never had an unannounced visit.  Nor would I drop by someone's place without calling first, either.

Uh if I was in the middle of having sex and someone was knocking on my door, thems just gonna have to wait. I aint stopping my sexings to go see who's at the door lol. I am also butt naked any time I am at home so if they dropped by un announced they'd have to just deal with the fact I am naked when they stopped by.

chamberqueen -> RE: Is "dropping by to say hello" rude? (8/25/2008 1:17:12 AM)

I think a lot of depends upon how you were brought up.  I've had some friends and family that keep an open door policy and some who feel that an appointment should be made.  When I lived in Italy it was never considered rude just to drop in.  I loved a surprise visit.

I've found that some people even have a double standard with this - they would always call before dropping in on someone yet would gladly welcome a surprise visit at their own door.  My family that lives in Texas always drop in on each other unannounced but my Michigan family always calls, and some of them would never even make that much of an "intrusion" - they would wait for a formal invitation.  It is really up to each person to decide their comfort zone.
