When i was in approximately junior high school my Sunday school class watched this movie about  Armageddon.  The movie was so creepy and horrible i've never been able to get it very far out of my mind. It seems to me that in recent years there have been more and more focus on 'end of times' movies, books, conversations, news reports, etc. The part that did (and continues to) freak the hell out of me with regard to the Armageddon movie was the way one woman was talking on the phone to her friend and suddenly her friend wasn't there.
Here's the reality for me: i believe i'm inherently a good person, i don't commit crimes, i don't deliberately harm people, i feel guilt and remorse, and have tried to leave this world a little better off than it was when i entered it.  However that does nothing to dissuade my fear of  the 'end of times'.  Does anyone else struggle with these issues or am i going insane all alone?

If you are making yourself miserable, it is over something that not only defies logic and common sense, but even scripture.

It takes some incredible 'it all depends on what you mean by 'means'...' semantic manipulation to support the notion that the Twue Xtians will leave the rest of the poor slobs behind any minute now.

And they've been pumping that sewage for centuries.

But the next time someone tells you about the'any-day-now'  imminent Rapture, point out to them that they can't go if they have worldly attachments, and ask them to prove their sincere faith by signing their house and car over to you now, before such documents become worthless.

Kalista... you have fallen into the age old trap of having your fears preyed upon to keep you in line. It's no surprise that you feel this way after an abusive religious upbringing, and the last eight years of your own government using terrorist attacks to their own advantage. My suggestion would be to change your church, for starters. The folks you've been following obviously have control "issues." They think of God as some kind of unforgiving asshole. And they sound like they are willing to traumatize kids in order to indoctinate them.

Remember one thing: God may exist, but NO ONE has an inside track on who or what God is, or what it/she/he wants from us. Anyone who claims to have "special information" is either deluded, or selling something.

Find a better path, and let the people who believe in a just and loving God help you heal over this psychic wound that these extremist nutjobs have inflicted on you.

Please notice that I'm NOT trying to tell you what to believe... (I'm a Deist/Taoist, myself, so I'm not really into any organized religion.) It's just that I think you have fallen in with a screwed up church. Try some people with a gentler way. That's all.

Is there a doomsday slated for mankind? Maybe. I remember having similar thoughts when I was a kid, watching a movie called "When Worlds Collide" about the Earth being destroyed by a passing planet. Other movies that had the theme of "the end of the world" to them also left me sleepless for nights on end. The end of all things is a popular theme for getting people into the pews, and for generating boxoffice... same thing really, raising money.  But like death itself, there's not much you can do about the end of the world, should it come to pass.  At least take comfort that you won't be alone, if it does.

That was by far the funniest response i've ever heard to that.
Thanks for the laugh,

I'll be dead before the end of the world or the end of the world will bring about my death therefore it's of no great consequence to me.

This however reminds me of those films where you know at some point in the future the world is going to end and everyone one is pinning their hopes on a hero to fix a centuries worth of inactions, a bit much to ask.  People are always looking for that easy answer, quick fix that will save them the work and no one wants to think a tipping point would be impossible to reverse.

Well you have ice melting at the extents of the earth faster than ever before. Besides the fact sea levels will rise the other effect is that sea currents will stop because there will be not a significant enough difference in sea temperature between the top of the globe and the equator to produce the convection currents in the oceans. When you consider that these currents are responsible for circulating oxygen and moving sea life around to different part of the globe you can foresee the point at which the oceans become stagnant and life dies out. Any animal or plant that depends on this sea life will in turn die out.

No more fish fingers.

They say there will be three surprises at the end:  those you didn't think would make it but did, those you thought would make it but didn't, and whatever happens to you.

Really, fretting about it won't change the future.  If you have a higher power, pray for peace of mind and leave it in their hands.

bipolarber,
Thank You so much for Your well thought out response to my post. It should have probably occured to me much sooner, that those were issues of that particular church. After all, they are also the same ones who tried to reinforce the long term abuse i was suffering at home.
Thanks again,
Kali

For the life of me, I -wish- I could find that scripture. It's in the New Testament... somewhere. UGH!  (I'm terrible for remembering exactly where in the Bible I read things)

Anyway, I am like you, Kalista. Being brought up in strict religious (and abusive) beginnings, it would tear my heart out worrying about end of times. For my family, my friends, myself - even my animals. I would be upset and anxious for days when these thoughts settled on my mind and it's very hard to shake them off.

However, I came across that scripture one day and bust up laughing. The gist of it is, not to worry about all the doomsday cries, or revelations itself. Basically, stop wasting your energy on the fear that is generated by (religious) extremists and instead focus on things that matter in your day to day life.

Because of my  beliefs and upbringing, I have found that I no longer let myself get worked up about each new discovery stating that the end of the world is coming, either through war, cosmic dispensery or fire and brimstone. Lol.

I will go looking for it again, just so you can see for yourself and get back to this thread in the hope that it helps you like it did me.

Well, Kalista, you might not like this reply as well as others, but it's getting thrown into the mix anyway.  The Rapture is bullshit, but The Revelation of John is another matter.  This is prophecy, a record of visions, rendered as best he could without a reference to what he saw.  It probably wasn't much different from the oddball precognitive dreams of so many, but on a far grander scale.  The world described in those 1900 year old writings is the world we are heading directly for.  The simple fact is, WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY FOR IT TO COME TO PASS.

I don't like the NIV.  Such visions deserve the richness of the King James prose, but I'm not going to quote from memory.  He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, to receive a mark upon his right hand or on his forehead, so that none could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.  A scannable cash free economy?  18 months maybe?  Instant global communication to allow For three and a half days, men from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze upon their bodies.   Got that right now.

Here's the part they leave out in all those sermons from 13.  Before the Antichrist is able to assume control, and trigger the final battle, two-thirds of the people on the planet are already dead from war, disease, and disaster.  Seems like a pretty clear sign that the end is near...  assuming you are among the survivors.  Worry then.  Live now.

Pssst... Summerwind... I don't know if you noticed, or not... but the end for the ancient Mayans came a lot earlier than 2012....

You might try reading the "Bad Astronomy" blog. Phil, the guy who runs it has a LOT to say about stuff like doomsday predictions.

Why does everyone obsess over the end of the world? (not such a sure thing) rather than worry about their own personal death. (100% a sure thing)

Phil has also taken over the duties as president at JREF, where they also have a few words to say about such predictions..

kali, i've had some of your thoughts as well, but on a milder note.  of course i wonder if the end of the world will happen, and mostly i wonder about it becuase i dont' want my children, loved ones, and myself to die if it happens.  pretty selfish of me i guess but it is what it is.

i don't get why some are so up in arms about people having a belief in something...they have a right to believe in something as much as others have a right to not believe.  shrugs, i guess some "kinks" (if you happen to have faith in anything),  are not okay to some.

edited because it's monday night, and i must be stoopid because i have faith in some things.

You're not stupid, pretty lady.

And kali, I agree with BP, when he said find some folks with a gentler perspective. The God I believe in is kind, and loving. I don't have much use for the fire and brimstone.

I'm calling BS on that one...pointing out that the 'beliefs' directly contradict themselves about the end of the world as we know it isn't being up in arms, it is asking a simple and obvious question that believers are unable to answer.

What are we to make of faith too weak to survive simple questions?

Such as; which one of the competing end times predictions straight out of the Bible is correct and which part of the Bible is in error?

Is the end of the world going to occur while people still talk on corded house phones (soon to be obsolete) as in the OP movie? 10 year? 20 years?

If so, where is the thousand years of peace and absolute truth on Earth?  When does mankind see the vastly extended life times? Or is the post-millenial part of the Bible wrong, and the pre-millenial part correct?

What about the biblical texts that clearly show the Earth having already ended?

Or the part about Heaven already being full?

Don't be so quick accuse people of being up in arms, and play the 'I'm so put upon' victim card when asked the obvious legitimate questions... unless you care to show what part of the Bible tells believers to act like that.

I am Pentecostal.   I was raised Southern Baptist.  I know exactly what movie you watched.
It s an eye opener.
That is what the movie is designed to deliver.
Should you be afraid?   If you watch the news and do not have a strong background of faith to hold to in the times, then you may want to read some books, talk to a pastor, and pray.
It is that simple.
I firmly believe we are the generation that will see this hapen because of the way the middle east and world powers are setting them selves up for.
