I suspect that the winner will be whoever best succeeds in defining his opponent. I think that's very sad.

It may be sad.  However, it is the way elections are won or lost.

LBJ had "Daisy", George H.W. Bush had "Willie Horton",  GWB had Kerry's classic "I actually voted for it before I voted against it."

This is how our electoral system is, and has been since 1800.

General ...

I don't want to get involved in discussions about Senator Clinton's motivation, as that is largely open to speculation ... but, I do represent a strong supporter of Senator Clinton, that is far from sold on Senator Obama.

My intention right now is to watch the debates with an eye on specific things, and cast my vote.

Well apparently Im seeing something you arnt but even going by your source... Obama has 273 electoral votes to McCain 265. One state swiches and the other guy wins.

To me...that's a dead heat.

I really dont give a damn if Obama is polling 5 points better than Kerry did in 2004 in a state he'll lose by 10 points anyway. All that matters is who wins and who loses because it is winner take all in each state (well except for Maine).

And even democratic analysts have said this is going to be a very close election.

No, it was FR, and an open question to anyone who is seriously claiming that Hillary supporters will vote for the right wing party rather than vote for anyone but Hillary in the left wing party... if that actually happened in significant numbers, why wouldn't the Clinton's go where the votes are?

Ok.  I do not think that would happen.
