The Obama campaign has been successful in part by using new technology and communicating in new media formats.  Read more below.

"Obama Transforms Convention Into Recruiting Machine for Voters"

Christopher Stern and Edwin Chen

"The campaign is asking them to text-message friends and urge them to sign on as supporters of the Democratic presidential candidate. It's part of a drive by Obama's team to leave the national convention with hundreds of thousands of new names to add to a database that already includes millions.

Conventions have long focused on the politicians in the halls and on staging spectacles to win over passive television audiences. Obama is trying to make this the most interactive one in history and to give it a global reach. It is a natural progression for a campaign that has far outdistanced Democratic and Republican rivals in using the Internet to recruit supporters and raise record sums of cash.

Obama is tapping into a ``culture that expects whatever happens here to be available simultaneously or nearly simultaneously online,'' said Andrew Rasiej, founder of Techpresident.com, a Web site that tracks the influence of the Internet on presidential politics. He cited such services as Youtube.com and social-networking sites such as Facebook, which have revolutionized the way people get news and information."

Perhaps it's because they know how to use the Internet.

I'm sure McCain's got people for that.

Too bad Obama doesn't have anyone who knows which city they are in at any given time though.

I'd say maybe you should go help him out, but if he's that lost and helpless there is probably no hope for him.

You know?

I've seen other politicians, sports figures, entertainers, truckers, and other people that travel frequently mis-state which  city and even which state they are in.  It's easy to do when you are on the road for any length of time.  Other than giving the name of the wrong city the first time I saw no other indication that Obama was high in any way.  High or not, and whether he knew which city he was in or not, I bet he still knew how many houses he owns.

However, if you're going to go on live TV at a scripted nationally televised event such as the DNC convention... wouldn't Obama's staff want to advise Obama to put his bong down long enough to try to figure out where he's at before he goes live on the air like that?

Kind of grasping at straws huh?  I guess McCain has put his foot in his mouth so many times you really need to use whatever you can find.  The one I liked best was when he used his immense knowledge of foreign policy to tell us about the Iraq-Pakistan border.  Then again, who cares if a presidential candidate doesn't know the geography of two little obscure countries that'll never have any effect on us?

I've just gone back and looked at the video again and it definitely does not look like it was scripted to me.  There were things that he wanted to be sure to say, such as the names of  his hosts, but other than that there was interaction with his wife and daughters that was certainly not scripted.  Other than your imagination and wishful thinking do you have anything to show that proves he was high in any way or on anything?  I also searched the video for this "bong" you mentioned.  Exactly where did you see this at?  You know that when you have to exagerate to get a point across you lose credibility.

I love it! "How" do you forget how many homes you have? I should have such problems.

He seems proud of the fact that he "inhaled frequently" and judging by his frequent gaffes I'd say he still does.

Which I regard as a necessity in this era, kitten.  The millions of people who use the Net, text messages on cell phones and Blackberry's, etc. stay up to date on events by electronic media.  They are not necessarily sitting still for the newspaper or TV.  Generations X and Y fit this demographic of course as do many people of earlier generations who have adapted to the changes in technology.

V,
That was the entire purpose of their VP announcemet scheme, they got people to sign up to receive the text message first, which they didn't.  The real goal behind the program was to build a database to mine, now they have how many cell #s and names?

? I've heard that a few people didn't get it but I certainly got it before the official announcement. My cell received the text message at 3:11 AM 8/23/08.

Hello Thadius,

Yes, of course that was the goal and the tactic is a common marketing strategy.  The guestimates on the size of the list is about 10 million people.

"Obama's smart call: seeking cell phone numbers"

Matthew B. Stannard, Chronicle Staff Writer
Saturday, August 23, 2008

"And that, All said, leads to the larger point: Whatever buzz Obama is creating now will fade once he reveals his choice for running mate, but the collection of mobile phone numbers will be there for the campaign to use.

"His opt-in e-mail list is 10 million large, which is tremendous," All said. "And now he's probably got a million cell phones, which is incredible."

An Obama spokeswoman declined to say how large the list of cell phone numbers actually is, but outside experts said the database collected by the campaign will be critical in a close race."

The news was out at 11pm that night.  Got to love that reference to the 3am call, eh?

It was a great marketing and data collection tool, I applaud them for the implementation.

I don't generally check the news that late on Friday night. I know the very first I knew of it was when I checked the message on my phone when I got up Saturday.
