Vendaval -> DNC security and threats to Senator Obama (8/27/2008 11:59:11 AM)

I suspected this was part of the reason behind the increased security at the DNC.

"Threat to Obama stirs painful memories"

By Matthew Bigg
Denver, Reuters

"Colorado police seized two rifles with hunting scopes and ammunition from a man they arrested a day before the Democratic national convention opened in Denver to formally nominate Obama as its candidate for the November 4 election."

(break)

"Concerns about Obama's safety led the U.S. Secret Service to provide round-the-clock protection from early in his bid.

Altogether three men were arrested. Court documents had one man quoting another as speaking of wanting to kill Obama on his inauguration day, using a sniper rifle to shoot the Illinois senator from high ground.

The comments amount to the "the racist ramblings of three meth heads," insisted U.S. Attorney Troy Eid.

HATE GROUPS

Some white supremacist groups would like to see Obama killed, according to Mark Potok, an expert in neo-Nazi groups at the Southern Poverty Law Center based in Alabama.

Threats against Obama circulate on the Internet, said Potok, whose organization has developed an international reputation for monitoring and opposing hate groups.

He cited a threat posted on the Center's website in April that read, with a misspelled word: "ATTENTION, IF OBAMA BECOMES
PRESEDANT I WILL KILL HIM MYSELF MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT".

White supremacists overwhelmingly believe the Colorado case was a setup by authorities determined to smash their groups, argued Potok, who based his assertion on information gleaned from neo-Nazi websites.

White supremacist groups and particularly the Ku Klux Klan have a notoriety in the United States for violence against African Americans."

I wonder what the FBI and local cops would have said about James Earl Ray if they had stopped him before April 4th 1968.

These nutjobs give "normal" White people like me a bad name. Though I really don't have an interest in it anymore, the National Alliance is the only one I would even consider having anything to do with. They preached non-violence, complained about reverse discrimination, things like that. They reported stories that had been highly underplayed in the media about Black on White crime. They seemed to be for the advancement of White people but NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHERS. Since Pierce died I lost interest.

Whether you agree with him or not, he was a very intelligent Man. I have an article by him called "The Bums Are White Again" and was one of his less racist articles. It spoke more about the true wealth we are losing in this country, but being Pierce he was not concerned that it is happening in other countries nor that it is happening to other races.

Pierce was not a nutjob in any way, but he was fiercely loyal to kindred, country and individuality. If he wasn't racist, he would have made the best President this country has had in 100 years, but it was not to be. When you are elected to represent, you represent all the people. I hope Obama sees it that way.

Any White person who assassinates Obama is a total idiot. It not only villifies their group of nutjobs, but all White people as well. Keep it up and it will be seen as a trait, and not a becoming one I might add. What happened after MLK got got ? Did it advance the White race, or the nutjobs' case in any way ? Hell no.

The NA also notes that there is a distinct lack of White groups. Pierce had quite a bit of disdain for those who commit violence, wanted nothing to do with the modern KKK or Neo-Nazis. The Blacks have groups, the Hispanics have groups, the list goes on, but just about every white skin nutjob group that makes the news, does so with violence.

A racist such as Pierce, not a nutjob, but a racist in a different sense than I sees it a certain way. That is things are being taken away from "us". That "we" were the major contributors to the development of this society. While this may actually be true, a racist forgets that "we" took this land from "someone else".

The way I see it is, perhaps it is "their" turn. It is predicted that in a scant few decades Whites will be in the minority. Let's hope "they" treat "us" better than "we" treated "them".

I use those quotation marks because I am not really part of the "we" who committed slavery. My family did not come here until slavery had been long abolished. When it comes to reparations, I simply don't owe. I am here, like anyone else, and as surprising as it may sound coming from what some call a racist, I would like to see Obama get the big chair. We have had enough of the status quo. Note that there is NO OTHER DEMOCRAT that I would even consider voting for.

I would also not vote for Powell, because he is part of starting this mess we are in. Those who think we are doing so well, OK, do well, but that debt they ran up is going to bite you in the ass. Got alot of money ? Make alot of money ? Spend it, because the dollar is going down the tubes no matter who gets the big chair.

It's all in how the government handles it, but that money in the bank will be worth less when you take it out than it was when you put it in. Of that you can be sure. You think times are bad now with all these foreclosures ? Watch the future unfold. See for yourself what happens to the price of a loaf of bread, a pound of beef, anything.

I saw a political comic the other day which I thought was very unfunny. The first panel showed a couple of people standing near a fence that said "US border" and one guy says "I'm not sneaking in, the economy stinks". The second panel had a couple of guys in suits in an office and one says "Looks like our plan to curb illegal immigration is working".

Different kind of unfunny.

No doubt Obama had to conform X amount, and to make compromises to get where he is, but I am hoping for something different at the core. At least something. Anything.

Ironic and sad that at the same time we as a nation show that skin color doesn't matter by nominating a black man, we try to assassinate him for the simple reason that it DOES still matter to many.  I love the diversity and nonmonolithic nature of this country, but some of its elements scare me.

Maybe they want to shoot him because he's "inexperienced"...

........well, we ought to respect minorities.......

Alumbrado -> RE: DNC security and threats to Senator Obama (8/28/2008 3:28:05 PM)

That garbage about 'A black man won't live 5 minutes after:

Voting

Kissing a white woman on screen

Being elected Mayor

Becoming Sheriff

Being elected Governor...'

etc. has been around for a long time, and it will still exist in the minds of the easily misled long after a black president is elected.

RealityLicks -> RE: DNC security and threats to Senator Obama (8/28/2008 3:36:30 PM)

Soooo... the security detail can knock off early?

Alumbrado -> RE: DNC security and threats to Senator Obama (8/28/2008 3:43:18 PM)

If it bothers you so much that America,  in addition to having more religious freedom than you can stand, is a place a black man can do all of those things above , without being killed, and a black man is now openly running for president, why don't you do something about it besides whining on the internet?

Vendaval -> RE: DNC security and threats to Senator Obama (8/28/2008 5:06:23 PM)

True.  We have come a long way in the struggle for civil rights but we still have a ways to go.  Hate groups are part of American society and extra security must be in place for the type of situation mentioned in the article.

Are you really so desperate for attention?

I've seldom seen you post because you have anything positive to say; you only appear with criticisms of other posters.  As these are usually, as in this case, wild distortions of the points they have made, I can only assume you do it so that they enter an exchange with you.  Can you show me any post you have made that doesn't fit that description?

At the risk of sounding mawkish, it's sad that you don't believe anyone will communicate with you outside an argument.  I strongly suggest you get outside, away from your PC this weekend.

Project much?   If you feel criticized when someone points out that the facts are at odds with your world view, that's a reflection on you, not on the people who rely on more objective sources and refuse to take your bitter, angry, word for things.

The fact that you repeatedly fake assertions that someone else never made, in order to 'accuse' them of something that you think will score you points , is proof enough.  This isn't a high school debate team where you can 'win' by trickery.

No matter how 'clever' you are with logical fallacies and mean spirited sniping, at the end of the day, nothing you have said will have altered reality in the slightest.

So whether you like it or not, the reality is, that although morons have been mouthing such threats about successful minorities for a long time, they have not been able to keep minorities in America from trying and succeeding at all sorts of levels.
And your scare tactics won't succeed in dissuading the next minority from ignoring your negativity, doing whatever they damn well please, up to and including running for President.

Celeres -> RE: DNC security and threats to Senator Obama (8/29/2008 12:36:03 PM)

Well, all Presidential candidatesare given Secret Service Protection.  Even Hillary has round-the-clock protection from her own personal agents and from field offices. Actually, part of her current Secret Service detail is from her husband from when he was in the White House. I would think that the increased security at the DNC is because they moved the venue outdoors. =)

Vendaval -> RE: DNC security and threats to Senator Obama (8/29/2008 3:08:12 PM)

Hello Celeres,

I do think having the last night of the DNC in an open stadium would call for increased security.  And yes, the other candidates will have their own Secret Service details.  But the direct threats on Senator Obama's life create a need for a high level of vigilance.
