My turntable is from the late '90s. It was mated to a receiver from the same brand and era as itself. The receiver was rated for 200 watts per side. The sound was OK; kind of flat and lifeless though. When I cranked up the volume, it didn't improve the sound; I just got louder sound that actually had distortion in it.
I now have the turntable hooked up to my old Pioneer receiver that I picked up when I was in high school. Rated at only 15 watts per side, this beast not only sounds sweeter, but when I crank the volume up, the sweetness simply does not go away. I think it sounds even better. Oh, and it's actually louder than the 200 watt wannabe from the '90s.
I'm glad I didn't dump my vinyl when my ex wanted me to. I've got the commercial CD versions of many of my LPs, but the way the CDs were remastered makes me cringe... literally.
Now that Dan is done playing, I may just go ahead and cue up 2112. The neighbors are gonna love me in the morning.

Oh I tend to agree Sap. I had a buddy of mine hook up an older turntable to a receiver he had in his shop and I have been going to the old vinyl store every once in awhile to pick up stuff. I just got Rush and I still like it better than on my ipod.
