Gustav shouldn't be hitting the coast until Monday morning.  Most coastal areas are being evacuated.  I would think the cell phone should still be working.  Maybe he simply has it turned off?

check weather.com for updates..  just put his zipcode in and that will tell you whats going on weather-wise in his area

From what I have read the projected path is still just west of New Orleans. Which finding out where he is, Terrebone (sp) Parish, would put the projection in that area, and yes Mandatory Evacuations have been issued as the parish itself has no prepardness plan, meaning shelters, help, ect. In other words the whole parish is shutting down. That information I found on the Parish website itself, I have since lost the link but could retrieve it again if you would like, There wasnt alot of information other than the Mandatory Evacuation was in effect, along with a curfew.

You said you were getting sms messages, does he indicate he moving to safety?

Whether the storm moves east or west he is in a critical area. The storm surge alone could be devestating to the area he is living.  I do hope he moves to safer ground. It just doesnt look good for his area at all, unnfortunatly..

The outer bands should be reaching the coast starting this evening, from best I can gather and intensifying as the eye moves toward the coast.

While it detensified overnight a bit, it is moving into warm waters today and expected to gather intensity. It is moving into that critial area that decides if going to be the Monster they are predicting. If it stalls or slows it will likely blow up, it it speeds up and move through more quickly those odds go down since there are cooler waters on the other side of the current loop (see Level's OP under  More on Gustav for a link explaining the current loop.) on the other side, which is why Katrina, Rita ect..were back to Cat 3 by landfall. I'm sure you more than aware the damage those storms did, they are extremely destruction.

I had to flee Rita and found these storms are Not to be taking lightly.

My prayers are with you and him and I will also pray that he is doing the smart thing and is on the move.

His not answering your calls on his cell are more than likely due to cell phone congestion. While it may ring on  your side, there is a possibility they might not be reaching him, happens to me all the time. Cell phone towers can only hold so many calls, and I would imagine those towers are operationing at capacity in that area.

I can imagine how frantic you are and my heart goes out to you.

Thanks ever so much for Yyour words of encouragement, i do believe there are good reasons for no voice contact, smiles, one also maybe the time difference btween Uus atm.i will keep looking at all reports and just keep on trying to connect. i will pray and keep the faith that all will be ok.

There's the Weather Channel.com, and also NOAA.gov.

The fact that it's passing just to the west of N.O. is not a good sign though. (I don't mean to crank up anyone's anxiety. I have friends in the city too.) But I seem to recall, the more energetic part of a hurrican is it's eastern side.
