I've been thinking about why McCain didn't choose one of the known contenders and there is significant downside to most of them.

Romney-The animosity, the horrible things they said about one another during primary season would have made it difficult.  Also Romney's Mormonism is an issue for many in the Christian Right and McCain needs to get them excited about him. He possibly could have delivered Michigan, but McCain might win that without him.

Ridge-Yes he could probaly have delivered PA, but he's pro choice, not helping him with the Christian Right and in fact could have done more damage than good.  Also, the impression he left after being head of Homeland Security is not positive.  Personally, I think Bush left him to twist slowly in the wind there, but the general perception seems to be that he didn't do a good job.

Crist-The main downside to Charlie Crist is the persistent and never ending rumors that he is gay.  As I've said many times, I don't care who people fuck, but plenty of the voters McCain is trying to woo do.

Pawlenty-Politically right wing enough, but doesn't really bring much.  Heck, might not even be able to deliver Minnesota.  If McCain was rock solid and just needed to fill out the ticket then Pawlenty's his man, but in this year's election place holder is not enough.

That leaves Huckabee.  If executive experience is the litmus test, Huckabee has it in spades.  The right loves him, he's rather a populist and is sensitive to the plight of poor and working class folks.  He and McCain did not eviscerate each other in the primaries, so there's no visible bad blood.  Maybe he didn't want it?  I can't imagine that's true.  So why not Mike?

Thought that myself.

He would have affected the Evangelical vote and energized the base in the same way Palin has,but with out the down sides.

He`s well known and liked. Was vetted during the primaries, where he did much better than expected and survived fairly well.

And he had Chuck Norris.

Um...
Religious nutcase?
Stole money from the State of Arkansas?
Voted one of the most corrupt Governors in the US?
Janet's scandal of having her jag paid for by the state, and then keeping it for personal use?
The Governor's mansion expenditures?
The illegal leasing of state property for natural gas exploration?
The religious "litmus tests" that his staff had to pass?

damn - i live in Arkansas and i missed these little tid-bits. I must be reading the wrong newspaper.

Of course, he does have a tendency to put his foot in his mouth when he is trying for a laugh.

I wouldn't worry too much if you didn't see any of BP's points in a real newspaper. Most of the crap he posts comes straight from his imagination and has never been read by anyone.

To the OP: He didn't pick him, so I guess why doesn't really matter anymore.

It seems clear that he picked her for politcial expedience.  I have no problem with that, this is politics. He hopes to bag some PUMAs.  Time will tell on that one.  But if it's all about qualifications like they keep saying, it seems that by those standards Mike is the better choice.

Because he is Elmer Gantry

Clippings from the Arkansas Times, mostly.
