Well, they did say that another attack on the country would work in McCain's favor. Seems it goes for natural disasters as well. Think of it: no pomp, no speeches... no possible misstatements by the newbie VP... just anoint McCain, and they don't have to lie or tap dance once about the record of the last eight years.... On the other hand... that means the GOP doesn't get it's moment to steal away the perk of the DNC last week. No, America will be left with two overriding images: one of Democrat Obama standing before a crowd of 84,000 cheering people, and one of Republican John McCain accepting his party's nomination in a state of emergency, crossed with news footage of Gustav slamming into New Orleans... harkening back to what the Bush administration failed to do three years ago. Hard to say which way it will fall out, politically. But as far as New Orleans itself goes, I just hope we DON'T end up with a repeat of Katrina. Obama has put out the word that he's opened his web fundraising network to co-ordinate donations, both of money and of water, food and medical help. to help those caught in the storm, and to help volunteers to make contact with the proper authorities to help out. I'm sure McCain will do the same. Politics aside, we have bigger fish to fry right now. My thoughts and prayers go with the entire city, and especially to the several people I've made friends with after Katrina, who were evacuated to my small town when that hurricane hit. Last fall, they finally moved back to their old homes, and were starting reconstruction in earnest... and now this.
