Hi folks--

Looks like McCain was planning for weeks to name Joe Lieberman as VP, but the Christian conservatives were outraged.  At one point he had 5 women among the 20 prospective running mates; Palin had glowing reviews from the social conservatives.

An interesting look into the selection process.

Not bad another article from the NYTimes without a quote about the actual headline, or any proof that it is the reason he didn't choose Lieberman.  I even like the way they refer to folks, shows real professionalism in the journalism. Mr and Ms, not Sen. or Gov.

Nice find Thorn.

The statement about want Lieberman but for the objections of the social conservatives, was in the first paragraph of the text.  Personally, I liked seeing the assortment of people and how they narrowed them down.

Now, as to mode of address, I saw this frequently when Clinton was still running.  She was most often called Hillary, where Obama was called "Obama".  So this may not be a red vs blue thing.

That is what I mean, if you are going to use a title why not use the Gov or Sen instead of Mr and inaccurate Ms?  I could have understood if it was just McCain or Palin, just seems out of place.

I saw what they stated in the first and second paragraph, yet they provide no quotes of those folks, much like an article not long ago about Mr. McCain by the very same newspaper... perhaps just a coincidence.  I don't see the purpose of the article in the first place except to suggest that McCain is controlled by the extreme right.

Know what I mean?

Thank you for posting this, thorn happy.

I knew that there were 4 other women being discussed as potential VP's for the Republican ticket and was surprised by this choice.

She is not just rather unknown to the national audience but to Senator McCain as well.  I prefer such important decisions be under careful consideration and not done in an impulsive manner.

This section in the article is very troubling for me, bolded for emphasis.

"After Mr. McCain contacted Ms. Palin, Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Salter met with her on Wednesday in Flagstaff, Ariz. It was not until the following morning that she traveled to Sedona to meet with Mr. McCain, who then sat down with her for his only interview of a potential running mate.

Within hours if not minutes after the interview was concluded, Ms. Palin had the job."

I just went back to check the layout, and it looks more like they were keeping it to one line of text. Especially since the body does have the more formal address.

Why is this troubling?  I have hired a great many people in the course of my career, and the most successful hires have generally taken the least amount of deliberation.

If a person clearly has the attributes you desire, why dicker and dither about it?

Sounds to me like Palin nailed the interview.

This has been done to death. She herself referred to herself as Hillary, as did her campaign.

It is amazing to consider the possibility that in my lifetime, The National Enquirer is a more accurate, exposing, and forthcoming reporting source than the NY Times.

These are amazing times in which we live!

Mike, the due diligence would have been done before the interview.  That's what all those search committees do.

So, McCains camp knew of the who my baby daddy issue, and until the 'right or wrong' gramma mamma issue broke, thought it could go without saying, and realized after the mouths started running, and the story broke.......

Damn?  Why couldn't there have been a hurricane?

That's the cynics of politic.

More like McCain knew of said issue, saw it for what it was, and chose Palin anyway, "warts and all".

Does anyone think that they should not get a job because their unmarried daughter is having a baby?  Is
that supposed to be a negative reflection on the parent, or a "mistake" by a youngster who is in love with
her beau and doesn't take care.  But for the grace of God, and a good condom, goes many of us!

This country suffered through a President getting blow jobs in the oval office and re-elected the guy.
Amazing that the firewall in my company would not allow me to download the "Congressional Record" of
those steamy hearings.  I think this attack on Palin's child will backfire on the liberal media and, if anything,
makes her family even more representative of what is going on in all of our families these days.  Does anyone
in any family not know a brother, cousin, nephew, niece that is living with their lover?

And the young lady is going to "marry the father of the child"...so rare these days it seems to me. We should
all be wishing them the luck and success they are going to need  in their "instant adulthood"....rather than casting stones.

As someone who prides himself in his balanced political outlook, I have to ask, have you never read the NY Times before?  In all their articles they use those terms, as well as Senator and Governor, which you must have somehow missed seeing in the link.  Yes, it does show professionalism, or would you rather they refer to him as McCain as other less polite media sources do?

Nobody's backpedaling.  After all, it's the Democrats who keep wanting to run Palin down because she's a woman.
