Apologies to all non-Floridians... but I just read about this today and am disgusted enough to try to rally the troops against it.

The proposed amendment reads as follows:

"In as much as a marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized."

Frankly, this is small-minded, discriminatory and hateful- the second clause in particular. It effectively rules out civil unions between gay couples as well as virtually any other arrangement involving shared benefits between unmarried couples of any kind.

It's embarrassing that people in this state are bigoted enough to even consider this. Let's show that we have some simple decency and bury this thing.

...And yet the "Vote "YES" on 2" bumper stickers abound.  i hate the sight of those stickers on cars driving past all the homeless mentally ill, and destitute people sleeping under the overpasses.  If only the time and money put into that sort of legislation had been used aiding the needy.

I hate to put it this way, but what did you expect from Florida ?

Among many other things I have seen while there, and heard about while not, this does not surprise me at all. We are talking about a State in which a bunch of old geezers got busted for gambling because they were playing pinochle for a penny a point.

Nice place to visit, but I have NO desire to live there.

Termyn8or, I hate to break it to you but a similar measure passed in California a few years ago by like 60 or 70% of the vote.

I dont think Florida is the issue here.

Fortunately the turn out for voting may sink this anyway... most people don't bother to even read the amendments..mores the pity.

Well, i wonder.  i was so disappointed that Amendment 1 passed.  i suppose the people that voted for it had no sick relatives, or children in public school...or more likely, they saw more pro-Amendment 1 bumper stickers than con ones, and felt they were informed enough to make a decision based on that.

These measures have been passing all over the nation I believe...I guess I have misjudged the religious ferver in this country...OR..It is confirming the homophobia of the majority.

Im so happy that the supreme courts over turned that vote here in Cali.  GAY MARRIAGE IS ON!  Its sad that people are so closed minded to other lifestyles.  I guess you can expect that from most of the southern states though.  Florida is part of the bible belt, atleast the pan handle is.  Mostly all right wing republicans.  When I was in Alabama and people found out I was a democrat, they almost shot me in the face!  One old lady actually gave me this look like I killed her baby.  I hate the south...

If it passes, you can bet there will be a legal challenge based on it's Constitutionality. That's what happened back in '92 in Colorado, when that state became "The Hate State, Where it's Legal to Discriminate." The final cost to the taxpayers, to fight the stupid, hateful legislation (cooked up by right wing, republican christians, I might add) was in the tens of millions, and was a huge clog to the court system.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is a pretty smart man in my book. The things people are saying about gays are roughly the same as the things people have said about blacks and all other minorities in the past. Laws created specifically to exclude a certain sect of society? Time will come, I don't have a doubt, that perhaps one day, even in our life-times, that a gay-family is nominated to run for the President of the United States. ...then again, China would be the next world's super-power... haha

That is where the constitutional amendment number 14 section 1 comes into play.  It states:

1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
 
It was the amendment that was used to over-throw the vote of the people in the first place.  It was originally put into place due to slavery and segregation, but as you mentioned before, minorities and gays often get the same treatment when it comes to the law.

I honestly don't think that the GOP really cares about Adam and Steve getting married.  What they do care about is getting folks to the polls.  The reason we have Bush instead of Kerry is that in many states, there were issues on ballots that conservatives REALLY care about.   Only 20% of the country really is that bigoted and stupid- but those assholes show up to the polls when there is the chance to do something like this... and when only 38% of the population votes- 20% becomes a majority.

You don't know what you're talking about.  It's not a regional thing.  It's urban, suburban, and rural areas for the most part in every section of the country.  As for the South......My entire state is controlled by the Democrats.  At the state government level, most of the South is still overwhelmingly Democratic.  So I am calling bullshit on your supposed Alabama experience.

Call bullshit all you want.  Go to Dothan Alabama and tell me its not right wing conservative!  My husband was born there, his family still lives there.  Its so freaking conservative that my husband left.  Thats why he joined the navy, he got sick of closed minded right wingers that surrounded him.  You cant go freaking 5 miles on the 231 without seeing a sign for some sort of babtist church.  I mean they post freaking billboards for thier churches!  The governer of Alabama is a republican Bob R.   • Voted YES on prohibiting needle exchange & medical marijuana in DC. (Oct 1999)
  • Voted YES on allowing school prayer during the War on Terror. (Nov 2001)
  • Supports a Constitutional Amendment for school prayer. (May 1997)
  • Religious affiliation: Baptist. (Nov 2000)
  • Voted NO on prohibiting oil drilling & development in ANWR. (Aug 2001)


So like I said, go ahead and call your bull shit all you want!  Also, it looks like Florida is right behind Alabama!

I live in S. Carolina and I'm an Independant and there are lots of us down here!
Yes, this is part of the "Bible Belt" but not everyone who lives here is like that.
I'm from Boston, Mass origionally and I have a thick Boston accent and people here have treated me very well for being a "Yankee."
So you can't really stereotype people.

The bible belt is mostly all conservative republicans.  I wasnt stereotyping either, I was giving a discription of something that happened to me.  People really did flip out on me when finding out I wasnt a conservative, and an old lady really did look at me like I killed her baby.  I was so freaked out by the old lady that I actually went home and told my mother in law about it.  She thought it was funny, I was thinking that souther hospitality was given only if you were a conservative...

Isnt there a town in Alabama that banned the sale and use of sex toys? I seem to remember reading about that a while ago.
