FatDomDaddy -> A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/2/2008 8:33:35 PM)

I am amazed on this experience thing.

Let us look at arguably the most experienced man ever to be elected President, James Buchanan. From state office he went to the House and the Senate where he was Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Ambassador to Russia, he later turned down an appointment to the Supreme Court,  AFTER he was named, served. He was  Ambassador to the Court of St. James's and the US Secretary of State and President of Franklin and Marshall College.

He was also one of the WORST presidents of the United States.

No let us look at two virtual neophytes.

One was a one term US Congressman, a state senator and defeated US senator nominee. The other was a police commissioner, two year assistant Secretary of the Navy and a first term elected Governor of New York but was serving less than two years when he was tapped as VP.

Both of them, Lincoln and Roosevelt are on Mount Rushmore.

I am ecstatic that a two year Senator is running for President and a two year Governor is running for Vice President.

Wow FatDom, I am truly and sincerly impressed.

I agree -- experience is not a determining factor or an exact predictor of performance. For those with inexperience, one must look past that to the skills and abilities of the person in question.

I thought this was an interesting take on Palin and why McCain picked her.

As for Obama, I think the conservatives criticizing his inexperience are belaboring an RNC talking point. Its been funny and glorious seeing them do an about face with PALIN. As usual, irony is completely lost on them.

Celeres -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/2/2008 9:22:44 PM)

I actually didn't know that, FatDomDaddy.

I think it was completely hypocritical of McCain to launch attack ads testifying to Obama's inexperience during the DNC, and then choose Gov. Palin the day after the DNC.

Also, at 43 years of age, President John F. Kennedy was sworn into office. After Robert McNamera turned down President Kennedy's offer to the Secretary of Defense, Kennedy replied: "Look, Bob, I don't think there's any school for Presidents either." Where does one "really" get experience from anyway, as evidenced by JFK, Lincoln and Roosevelt?

As for Fred Thompson, it seems as if he was nursing a cold or something? He was clearing his throat quite a bit... and I agree that his speech could have been better, but I was nevertheless "moved" by his speech, unlike some others I've heard this past week.

To be fair, those talking points were lifted right from the Democrat Primary and The Clintons. Obama's running mate echoed them too when shilling for Hillary.

Why???

McCain is actually running for the office.

Obama needed Biden because of Obama's lack of experience.

McCain on the other hand needed someone outside the box of Washington.

Outside the box?  You have not researched the earmarks she has gotten for her home town and her state.  She is very much inside the box of DC, just because the GOP says she is not, does not make it true.  Hell she even hired a well known lobbying firm to assist her in getting money.

She even learned how to flip flop, She was very supportive of that bridge to nowhere, until talk sof the VP position started ringing in her ear, now she claims to have been against it.  Yet when she ran for Gov she was very very supportive of it.

MrRodgers -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 5:45:10 AM)

Buchanan was also a 5 term congressman and a 2 term senator. (the most experienced before or since) I agree though experience is of little report on performance or better yet...character.

Nixon was qualified by the congress and the senate and then 8 yrs as VP...disqualified by character. So if any of this matters is something that remains to be seen.

Fred Thompson was the oratorical hit man last night leaving the impression that congress is at a low ONLY because of the last 2 years when it could just as easily be as a result of the repubs abusing the overweighted power of the minority in the senate where they can phone in a fillibuster from the golf course.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 5:47:17 AM)

You can't have it both ways on Palin.

At one point she is an out of touch, political nobody from a podunk state and then the next she's a shrew political insider with Washinton insider muscle!

Many Alsakans were for the "bridge to knowhere" until the actually learned more about it and when the time came to derail it, she did.

RealityLicks -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 5:58:49 AM)

I think running a state with such a tiny population leaves plenty of time for moose-hunting.

Touché.

Most everybody is for everything that is on...somebody elses tab. It was in fact going to be built until it became a national disgrace for Stevens and less so...republican's conservative hypocrisy and sponging.

Who can tell us ? I've read and heard Alaska took the money anyway (over $300 million) and just spent it somewhere else. Can anyone tell us if that is true ?

Termyn8or -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 8:10:46 AM)

Here's a thought about experience forya. GWB has plenty of experience being President. He ran about a half dozen companies into the ground. Too bad they couldn't get rid of him soon enough.

They received $36 million to put towards other transportation projects instead.

I think if McCain is serious about needing more experienced people in Washington, he would have chosen Lieberman, instead of Palin. With that said, certain News groups (ABC, I believe) quotes certain members inside the McCain camp that McCain himself still wanting to choose Lieberman up until this past Sunday. He decided against it when everyone in his campaign persuaded him that it would be a losing ticket, "McCain-Lieberman". I suppose friendship has a pricetag in politics.

Thadius -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 11:44:51 AM)

Just hopping in with a quick question about the point you are trying to make.  How many of those inexperienced presidents (you know the good ones) didn't have a Gov on the ticket, you know somebody that has run a government?  Then add to that, how many tickets didn't have a veteran on them, you know somebody that understands how the military works?

[;)]

I do appreciate your point, and have to say that there is a good claim to be made for somebody outside the typical box.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 9:27:41 PM)

Most elected American President fall into two categories, Governors and Generals that win Wars.

I actually dreaded the thought of FOUR sitting US Senators running and I love how all the non McCain voters think he should have picked Liberman.

Thadius -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 9:31:16 PM)

More to the point that I was making.  There has never been a ticket to win the White House without at least a Gov on it.  Even the inexperienced Lincoln had Hamlin (a gov and veteran).

FatDomDaddy -> RE: A thought about Experience and The Presidency... (9/3/2008 9:38:23 PM)

To that I agree and McCain's add of a Governor with outside cred will assure him the election over two Sitting Senators/
