Thadius that is the issue. Just because she is running for office does not make her a feminist. Cat has kittens in the oven, doesn't make 'em biscuits.      So tell me, are there any feminists in Gor?

Oh, and Thadius, after I iron I am making baked stuffed haddock. Does that make me *not* a feminist too?

I thought the idea of the feminist movement was to support the strength and independance of each woman as an idividual.  Perhaps I was wrong.  So only women that agree with the liberal side of the spectrum can be feminists?  Got it.

Oh and I am not the one claiming that she is or isn't a feminist... Those claims are being made by your side of the debate.  I simply pointed out the hypocrisy of some of the "feminists" around here claiming that because of her beliefs she was not qualified, or that she isn't a feminist.

Now get that ironing finished, and hurry up with dinner.  It sounds good.

Nonetheless, do you really think she's a feminist? Do you think she would claim the title for herself? That was the topic of the OP.

A central tenet of feminism is advocacy of women and advocacy of gender equality.

So far as I know, Sarah Palin has never campaigned on such issues specifically, but her ability to take on a male-dominated political establishment and win certainly seems to showcase all that feminism holds dear.

"showcase all that feminism holds dear".Were you able to keep a straight face while you typed this.

Don't you think the slant in that question is a bit overmuch?

Mysogyny?  Oppression?

No these are the topics of focus and attention in feminist theory which is foundational to the broad-based (no pun intended) definition of "feminist."

Feminists trying to take away women's reproductive rights, hm?

She might claim to be a feminist, but she's still dumb as shit if she's gonna be overly concerned with the happenings in my vagina.

I didn't say she wasn't a feminist, I'm saying she's a moron. She can believe what she wants and that's fine, but I start getting a little annoyed when she begins trying to legislate these beliefs upon me.

The article I posted was titled "Palin is a true feminist role model" (emphasis mine).

I am not going to bandy the semantics of whether a "feminist role model" is or should be either an acknowledged or self-identified feminist.

What the article does drive home is that Sarah Palin's career is the sort of thing that one would expect feminists to be cheering about:  woman takes on a male-dominated political structure and wins.  (whether you agree or disagree with her various political stances, are you seriously going to deny that her career has that general trajectory?)

Is that Gor humour  ?

Seriously now, it looks like you're building a straw man to divert people's attention from the real issues: what about Iraq, what about the economy, what about healthcare? Perhaps these subjects aren't as fun as the People magazine type subjects that keep you busy, but they're there in some people's minds, people who are fully aware that Palin's nomination was one stroke of genius in one sense: it's mobilised public opinion well away from what matters. For that kind of circus politics, I have to tip my hat to the GOP.

Ah the irony is almost too much for me to carry on.  A Gorean arguing with women, that claim to be feminists, about the rights of a particular woman to run for office.

Time for me to go back to being a chauvanist.  So who is making dinner?

Aynne what times dinner,Can I bring anything...wine?

Nah, that was my own special blend.   Like it?

I am more than willing to discuss the issues.  I even started a thread hoping to do so, and I got answers "he isn't Bush" and the like.  Are you suggesting that we try to bring it back to that discussion?  I am game.

Cool. Let's start with not labeling people you don't know and not putting words in their mouths.

Palin is a true feminist role model

Just because she's a female doesn't make her a feminist role model. What has she done to further women's issues? Biden has a solid record on women's issues and is much more of a feminist role model than Palin though not so as much as H. Clinton who truly walks the walk. Hopefully, you're not of the mistaken impression that feminists have to be female or that being female automatically makes one a feminist.

So only women that hold liberal viewpoints are considered worthy of being strong female role models? Or is it that only women with liberal beliefs are entitled to be strong and independant?  Perhaps, it is as simple as women that have conservative viewpoints, aren't entitled to the same treatment as their liberal counterparts...

Hmmm, me smells somethin here... and it taint a good thang.  "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" ~Animal Farm

What I've always thought was a hoot is when women with kids (2.6, say, versus 2.2) are labeled as money-grubbin' welfare cheats if they're poor and stay home with the kids.

However, mid to upper class women are supposed to stay home with the kids for the betterment of family life and society in general, and not complain about the lack of decent child care.

This is beyond absurd.  So the fact that Sarah Palin is a woman succeeding in an arena heretofore dominated by men means nothing, and says nothing positive to the daughters of America about their potential to succeed in this world....all because she is on the wrong side of some ephemeral laundry list of issues?

Thanks for the article, Bita. I think this hit the nail on the head:

quote:

What McCain does not understand is that women supported Hillary Clinton not just because she was a woman, but because she was a champion on their issues. They will surely not find Sarah Palin to be an advocate for women.

That says it all: the rest is smoke blown in voters' faces.

The fact that she appointed a top public safety commish who had already been reprimanded for sexual harrasment says nothing postive to the daughters of America about the potential to succeed in this world... but then .. maybe we have different ideas of what success means. You're right .. it's beyond absurd.

I, for one, appreciate all the republican men in this forum telling me that I should admire the "feminist" Palin.  Good on you.

Women are able to make up their own minds, believe it or not, and I don't think more than 1% of us will fall for the "Palin is a feminist" bs.  But keep pushing it.  Good luck with that.

You almost sound like the propaganda ministry of the old USSR describing the agricultural harvests. Palin is a great VP. Bush had done well in IRAQ.

You have special talents. Keep it up.
