Who are your female role models?  Feminists you admire? Women you view as heroines?

Please state why and provide links if appropriate.

And for goodness sake, no name calling!

Right on you guys!  Keep those great women coming.

Here is one of my all time favorite women from herstory, Queen Boudicca from the Iceni people who inhabited part of what is now England.

Boudicca (died c.AD 60)
Boudicca was queen of the Iceni people of Eastern England and led a major uprising against occupying Roman forces.

"Boudicca was married to Prasutagus, ruler of the Iceni people of East Anglia. When the Romans conquered southern England in AD 43, they allowed Prasutagus to continue to rule. However, when Prasutagus died the Romans decided to rule the Iceni directly and confiscated the property of the leading tribesmen. They are also said to have stripped and flogged Boudicca and raped her daughters. These actions exacerbated widespread resentment at Roman rule.

In 60 or 61 AD, while the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paullinus was leading a campaign in North Wales, the Iceni rebelled. Members of other tribes joined them.

Boudicca's warriors successfully defeated the Roman Ninth Legion and destroyed the capital of Roman Britain, then at Colchester. They went on to destroy London and Verulamium (St Albans). Thousands were killed. Finally, Boudicca was defeated by a Roman army led by Paulinus. Many Britons were killed and Boudicca is thought to have poisoned herself to avoid capture. The site of the battle, and of Boudicca's death, are unknown."

My maternal grandmother. A double gold star mother born in 1900. A tough Scots-Irish woman who had lived a life few of us can even imagine. Outlived 6 of her 14 children. In 1984, when I was 17, I drove 4 hours each way simply because she wasn't supposed to walk to the polling place but was adamant about going, she had never missed voting since she gained the right, my aunt and uncle who she lived with both had to work and they knew she would head out the door the moment they left. So I cut school and took her to vote, I didn't dare ask for who. Afterwards she wanted to go to the cemetary where her husband and sons were. She never spoke of the two sons at all and my mother hardly knew them being a little girl when they went off. She told me about them that day and I treasure it to this day.

I would even add a few women around here to that list.  I don't need to toot their horns, because they know who they are.

I would have to say Condelisa Rice. She has 3 different degrees and speaks 5 languages fluently. She has been a very effective, and respected Secretary of State..

Sally Ride, Martha Stewart, Mary (the mother of Jesus), Florence Nightingale.

all strong women, who while maybe some were not the most likable women in the world, changed the way women and men thought about how women could function in society.

And another great woman mentioned in another thread is -

"Sandra Day O'Connor (born March 26, 1930) is an American jurist. She served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1981 until her retirement from the bench in 2005. The first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, she was in some cases a crucial swing vote for many years due to her case-by-case approach to jurisprudence and her somewhat moderate political views. However, during her time on the Court, she voted with Justice Rehnquist more than with any other justice.

Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, she was a politician and jurist in Arizona.[1] O'Connor was nominated to the Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1981. On July 1, 2005, she announced her intention to retire effective upon the confirmation of a successor. President George W. Bush nominated Justice Samuel Alito to take her seat in October 2005. O'Connor left the Court upon Alito's commissioning by President George W. Bush on January 31, 2006.[2] She is currently the Chancellor of the College of William and Mary, and also currently serves on the board of trustees of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia."

Oh... I almost forgot.  Nancy Pelosi, mother of 5 and Speaker of the House.  She happens to be 3rd in line to assume the presidency, should the need arise.

My mom. The most courageous and decent  human being I've ever known.

Christina Hoff Sommers and Camille Paglia, two feminists that seem to make a lot of sense.

There are more that escape me at the moment.

The lady who serves the kids lunch at the school my grandson's attend. The mom who cried with pride when her son went to Iraq then cried in pain when he was brought home in a casket but still loves this country. The lady who said .. I'm not going to the back of the bus. The lady who, years later is driving that bus and the other one who is running that bank.

There's too many .. and, I could probably put down a link or two for some of the more famous ones .. but, really, there's no need, I think. Just gotta open your eyes to see how many amazing women surround us every day.
