bipolarber -> When was it...? (9/3/2008 8:07:43 PM)

It's been raining here all day. The remnants of hurrican Gustav, sweeping over the state, like a huge washing machine. I've been stuck at home, with some bug, and I've been watching the coverage of the GOP convention most of the afternoon. I didn't watch the actual speeches so far tonight, since I've been feeling wrung out.

But, I've had the day to think... When was it, do you suppose, that they began to change the language on us? Words are our primary means of communication, to extend meaning to others... yet, over the last eight years, those words began to change:

When did kidnapping become "extraordianry rendition"?
When did coverups become "redaction?"
When did spying become "domestic surveilance?"
When did torture become "enhanced interrogation techniques?"

Among so many, many other bits of Orwellian doublespeak. Did it happen before 9-11, or was it a little after that? Was it after they began to lie to us about where the anthrax was coming from? Or the lie about yellowcake from Nigeria? Or when they swore to us there were WMD in the middle of a country that we had left in smouldering ruins ...just 10 years before?

I’m guessing, right about the time the general public became comfortable with them doing it.

cpk69,

Yeah. That was the thing that kinda got to me... we all seem to have gotten used to it.
Now we accept, without much resistance, the idea that "time horizions" are the same thing as time lines... or the "Maverick" really stands for old white guy who votes with the current administration 90% of the time.

We are so fucked by these people. :(

I hear what you’re saying, and have my suspicions as to “when it all started”; fear has been around for a very long time.

Thing is, when consent is involve, I think it means we are fucking ourselves. :( x2

Political propaganda is as old as the remants of lost cities on the plains of Mesopatamia.  The more things change the more they stay the same.

bipo, no response is needed, you seem to have it under control. We have disagreed here and there but I am with you on this one.

Eventually being dead will be called "vitally challenged", or maybe "cardio-pulminarily deficient".

I say call a spade a spade, and don't anyone give me any racist bullshit about this, a spade is a type of shovel.

Torture, Term's suggested word = Torture.

I could go on for days, but you get the idea.

...as you point out, it's Orwellian. The control of language influencing perceived meaning.
