Status: offline 		I have a 5 month only PCc that came with Vista home basic.

The pre installed Nortons trial is over.

What programs which could be all inclusive or perhaps seperate would in your opinion best be well suited for purchase at a low price end range. My financial recources are limited. But I sure dont want to be vunerable.

My usage is fairly low in regards to internet use, a few trusted sites, my messenger programs. It's the googling something for information and hitting a bad site I am wary off.

I have used the AVG free for ages and really had no issues I dont think, but the again, lost two computer within a year to losing both the hard drive and motherboard, so there is suspect.something could have got through any ways.

I need non recourse hogs being that I cant upgrage to more memory and take steps to protect and improve it at the same time, so it protection first.

Im not computer stupid so can understand some tech talk, which by no means being an expert.

Givin the ever changing programs available I would just like to get a feel on what works reliable without sending my computer into recourse overload.

So internet geeks, tell my your pro and cons, so I can make a better decision with input and opinions of what people prefer and why.

I could google myself senseless because all programs tout they are the best.

Hey at least this is a non political thread, tho fear it will get buried in those that million of political threads, but its worth a try.

There are people on here that know more than I do about
this but if you lost hardware like motherboards and harddrives
I doubt the cause was software, ie. a virus.

Do you have the computer plugged into a good APC?  Not just
a surge protector but a box that can even out the flow of  electricity
to the computer and protect it in case of power outage and sudden
return surge.  APC is a type of device and also a brand name.

I use a combination of safety and utility software programs but I
like to keep old hardware going so I am not familiar with Vista.

Status: offline 		Get avg antivirus free. Its free and works well. If you set it to it will scan your google sites for you and tell you which ones are ok to go to. Get spybot search and destroy. It's free and works well. Get zone alarm firewall. It's free and works well. Get mozilla firefox as your web browser. It's free and it puts a stop to popups and unwanted virus attachments. Run your computers defragmentation program at least once a week. You can schedule it to do it when you most likely sleep. And if you have to connect to the internet try to do it thru a router. The goal is to get as much protection between you and the web while allowing you access to it. Keep all the programs updated (most do it automaticly). I just had to do these exact things to my sister computer today because her norton trial ran out. Yea her pc was riddled with spyware, maleware.

Status: offline 		AVG Free is better than most anti-virus software that you pay for.  Those guys are geniuses.

Status: offline 		fyi, Im not blaming the software for the deaths of the other two. The desktop was 7 years old and I knew it was going.  The laptop was a freebie from a friend that virused it to death with porn and I reformatted and it never was stable.

heh Vista wasnt an option, I am a poor girl. When the ol laptop died with no warning. My sister susprised me and took me to PC Richards here in new york on Memorial Day weekend and I got the cheapest one, with Vista preinstalled. If hasnt been to difficult on me yet Vista wise, but Im not a heavy user and heavest I used it yet is probably playing on pogo. LOL 

I have had avg free for years and had nary a problem with it so I will probably end up back with it and do a d/l today. I will look at the spybot program (does it also look for adware)as well as the fire wall program. I do have the mircosoft one running and I do also go through a router.

I have always tried to keep my computer security safe, and never ended up with a virus taking hold. I did daily virus scans and spyware daily not weekly. 

My defrag is still sitting at 1% and I am running the disk cleanup. Like to keep things clean. So this brings up performance programs that can also keep the registry clean (I know there are pro's and cons) a cluttered registy does seem to bog down the performance I have found. I do backup before using them.

I would rather get suggestions from people that have used and happy with a program, than d/l a million trial ware  programs and still not know its integerity.  Generally I dont trust what they say about their programs, most especially if its not familiar.

I have found over there years that the geeksters here have pretty sound advise. If it free thats great, if others feel its does the job, I am still willing to pay for a trusted program, but the heavy advertsiers and big company ones are just beyond my budget and I do want to keep this one clean and safe. As I did the other. Time on one took over and stupidity of the previous owner did  the other.

Status: offline 		Really no idea what the experts think is the best.  However...I've tried a dozen or so virus programs over the years.

All, pretty much a waste.  Currently I am running trend micro on my pc's.  One license allows you to register 3 computers.
It has spyware and a firewall built in.

So far it has done what it should.  Which I can't say for many programs out there.  Although it does cost.  I think I paid around 50 for a years subscription.

Status: offline 		Ive been  using AVG, Zone Alarm, Spybot and AdAware for the past few years. All Free, and no problems, again Im not using Vista but XP, but I havent heard of any problems with Vista users.
Avast is also highly recommended.
I use my computer 14/24 of the day constantly surfing, chatting and using weird stuff and they have caught the problems Ive had.
