not sure if you're talking about Obama or McCain...it doesn't matter.  Enochlophobia, or fear of crowds is fairly common.  Besides...are we really going to start nitpicking every single detail?  Slippery slope....

It's not a weakness.  People just get overly focussed on looking for any drawback to a person, they'll point out just about anything as "evidence" they're not the best choice.  What's next, gray hair?  I'm 33 and I have them, I don't feel that it makes me much less of a person, or much less capable.

......a bit of a cheap shot this seems to me. There are more substantive grounds to criticise either candidate.

He doesn't need to be comfortable with big crowds.  he just needs to address them, comfortable or not.  Soft limit, not a hard one.

I would have thought there were very few times the president has to address huge crowds. Secret service doesn't like huge crowds and the pres. Too hard to control.

I think a job has to fit the personality of the person.  Bush was never comfortable talking with foreign dignitaries in a level situation.  He avoided that important part of the job often, never preferring to meet face to face.  He would rather "negotiate" from afar often by crazy insecure displays of powers. 

So if you're leader of a country with a large population, he should be comfortable talking to large crowds.  Kind of like if you want to be a manager, you have to be comfortable managing and working with other people.  Just my opinion.

Thomas Jefferson did not enjoy large crowds or public debate for that matter. He seemed to do OK in spite of that.

 I am not sure who the OP refers to...Obama or McCain as I haven't been following your election too closely.  I imagine that many people are uncomfortable in large crowds however as long as this does not result in avoidance behaviour it isn't a problem.  It may simply result in heightened tension initially, dry mouth, sweaty palms etc.

Yes cheap spin shot McCain is not comfortable in a lecturn speach format. He's capable of giving the speaches he's just not at his best in that forum.
Put the man in a town hall meeting format and the size of the crowd doesn't seem to bother him at all.

This is the goofiest thread I have ever seen. Bush or any other President will never address a large crowd when overseas. It isn't allowed by the secret service, and never has been. Getting secret service clearance is difficult to get in this country. I know because I had to go through it..
