Or, not phrased in an awkward metaphor, what level of control should governments have over their citizens?

Let's take present-day America as the baseline.

I'm convinced most people need less autonomy with regard to their savings, their ability to have children, and the types of contracts they can enter. See: the abysmally low (negative, in fact) national savings rate, the tendency for the dumbest, least able and poorest members of society to breed like rabbits, and the embarrassingly high number of people who took on mortgages they simply couldn't afford.

Discuss!

Government should have less control over the people than the people have over the government and over themselves.

The answer isn't more government interference, it's less human stupidity.

May the Farce be with you. And remember: your focus determines your reality.

You have failed to address the awkwardness of the metaphor.

Offhand, I would say that the embarrassingly high numbers of financial institutions with the willingness to loan (most of which have overseas operations) absurd amounts without taking their feet out of their wastebaskets and their ass out of a swivel chair, so long as the paperwork passes muster is going to rather spice the broth.  and you know what too many cooks can do,   they can fight terroism in Iraq.

That right there?  that is an awkward metaphor, get back to me with your thoughts.

About as much control as I would give you... I think both entities have something in common.  You like being in everyone's business...

The national savings rate may be low, but we as a nation are still handling money better than the government.

Why blame the buyers who couldn't afford houses?  How about the dummies that FINANCED the deadbeats?

Good luck with your idea that the government should limit procreating.  The fight over THAT one will make the gun control fight look tame by comparison.

Once you submit to an all-powerful Government your only hope would be that you know your new Master very, very well, because there could be no going back as Government would then have ultimate power over you. Even at that, a new problem would arise when your Government Master changed in time... as you can't know which Government Master would own you next, or what your slavery to that next Master would entail.

And not only would you be selling your own soul into slavery, you would be selling your progeny into slavery as well, with no going back.

You have it backwards, my friend.

THAT is the proper order of things in the United States.

Our Government exists for no other reason than to serve us - "we, the people".  Just as I choose what to ask of my sub, and how I ask them to serve me, we do the same with our government.  I have good friends who have come here from countries that have the opposite mindset - the people exist only to build the state, and they lose themselves to the state, lose their identity, and cannot count on the state to protect them, defend them, or help them - just use them.  This is profoundly sad to me.

The purpose of government is not to control the lives of individuals, in my opinion.
The purpose of government is to provide security for its citizens, essential services
to fight common natural and man made enemie, and to insure that everyone has
equal opportunity to succeed...or fail.  Nothing more.
