BitaTruble -> US Pledges 1 billion $ to Georgia (9/5/2008 7:11:51 PM)

$

Also on Bill Moyers tonight.

"... the United States pledged $1 billion to help Georgia recover from its defeat by Russia’s armed forces, which continue to control two breakaway regions, as well as buffer zones in Georgia."

"In an interview, Georgia’s prime minister, Lado Gurgenidze, said that the war had cost $1 billion, including direct damage to infrastructure and property. At the same time, he said the country’s economy remained “remarkably resilient,” thanks to the support from abroad. “The free world will not let the Georgia economy fall and will not let it founder,” he said."

The war cost one billion .. we pledged one billion. Georgia's economy is 'remarkably resilient'? Why wouldn't it be if the US is the one footing the bill? Where's that billion dollars coming from and how pissed is Popeye going to be when he finds out?

Can someone 'splain this to me .. you know.. in small words so I understand?

If it were the Georgia that sits north of Florida, it might be worth considering.

I thought the Republicans were in favor of SMALL government.  OK, I know, it must be an Obama conspiracy.

Mayhaps,the Cold War was seemingly more profitable than The War on Terror, and so we're beginning to wax nostalgic for the days of Kalashnikovs and "Star Wars".

"...we didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning.."etc.

I'm not a fucking Georgian.  I thought I was an American.

I am all for humanitarian aid but now we are paying for their war bills?  While we are already deeply in debt?

Oh yeah, Popeye is going to blow a gasket.  If we were within earshot the colorful cursing would no doubt turn us blue.  [&:]

$1 billion devalued US dollars? Don't they realize that's the equivilent to almost ONE WEEK in Iraq?!!!

bipolarber -> RE: US Pledges 1 billion $ to Georgia (9/6/2008 8:25:04 AM)

My mistake... 10 billion a month in Iraq... so $1 billion is only THREE DAYS expenditure in Iraq.

Kalyna36 -> RE: US Pledges 1 billion $ to Georgia (9/6/2008 8:42:25 AM)

One billion now or billions later as a new cold war comes from not doing something to stop the Russian agressors and let them claim and opress the independent states they once had that now offer a buffer to the west.

SilverMark -> RE: US Pledges 1 billion $ to Georgia (9/6/2008 9:06:16 AM)

popeye1250 -> RE: US Pledges 1 billion $ to Georgia (9/6/2008 9:21:35 AM)

Correct, I do disagree with this.
"The government" has no money, not one penny, all the money in this country belongs to ...."The People!" So why is our govt pledging *our money* to another country?
All this "foreign aid" stuff has to end.
It's been going on since before WW2 and there's no end in sight.
If it really worked the amount we gave should be going *down* every year not up.
If individuals in the U.S. want to give their own funds to foreign countries or charities that's fine by me and that's the way it should be done, not by our govt!
Foreign countries now pay the lobbyists on K street big money to lobby *our* Congress to give them bigger money in "foreign aid."
And as we know most of that money is stollen!
The Virginia suburbs of Washington have now taken over from the NYC suburbs of Connecticut as the most wealthy in the country due to so many lobbyists living there!
There are too many people making too much money from all this "foreign aid" crap.

Wow...that was eye-opening Popeye.  i always thought your issue with foreign aid was that it was sent to Africa or the Caribbean...but apparently you're pretty much against it across the board LOL.  Damn...you're even meaner than i thought.[;)]

Mr Culate did indeed star in the same play as Ms Ejac. I forget the name though.

That damn Bush just took $6.66 out of my pocket and gave it away..alone with every other tax payer in America. I sure could use that money to buy gas with.

Butch

meatcleaver -> RE: US Pledges 1 billion $ to Georgia (9/6/2008 10:05:51 AM)

The US's promises to Georgia were always unrealistic and encouraged Georgia to try and regain its sepratist regions, thinking the US would ride to its rescue. So I guess the US has to give something to Georgia to save face.

The other stupid policy of this administration is promising Ukraine membership of NATO when its President is pro-NATO while its Prime Minister, police chief and much of its armed forces are pro-Russian.

Does Bush enter a fish tank to think?

Iron, the people in D.C. are there to run our govt. not to be running a charity for foreign countries.
Like any "govt. program" things like this just get way out of control.
And, when so many people make money from them they just seek to perpetuate them.
*There is *a reason* why there is a Mercedes Benz dealer in every single country in the world!*
U.S. Taxpayers are paying to buy tens of thousands of Mercedes Benz's and other luxury vehicles every year!
Some years ago the U.S. State Dept was trying to justify the purchase of" private corporate jets" by many countries that were on U.S. "foreign aid" programs!
And about twenty years ago CBS' "60 Minutes" did an expose on the country of Milawai (sp) and how after receiving their foreign aid check the "leader" and about 100 of his cronies went to London, rented four floors of a 5 star hotel for a week and went on an orgy of spending for luxury goods including $20,000 fur coats, electronics, $20k worth of luxury cosmetics, cars , champaigne etc and had it all shipped back in 20 trailor truck containers on a ship!
Vladimir Putin owns a luxury villa on the French Riviera paid for by,.....U.S. Taxpayers!
Seems we "loaned" Russia $67B after the breakup of the Soviet Union which has yet to be repayed!
I could go on for 4 or 5 more pages but I think you get the point.
Yes, I'm against "foreign aid" *across the board.*

You need to understand the history of the Ukraine and especially since gaining independence. Russians have made sure that fellow Russians are still in key positions. They bribe and keep money flowing in the east of Ukraine to stir up division be between the many Russian immigrants and with Ukrainians of Russian dissent in the East which some bought into the systematic attempt by Russian to eliminate the history and culture of the Ukraine against Ukrainians that have both Russian and Western descents.

Some might be loyal to Russia but I guarantee you most are just coward hedging their bets. Ukraine as independent is not that accurate. Russia still controls it in a way that they are still not allowed to reach out to the world economically. There has been a not so covert non military war going on since the end of the occupation where Russia tries to make sympathizers comfortable and destroy the real Ukrainians through economic depression.

I guarantee you if Ukraine was allowed to join NATO that pro Russian sentiment would be nothing more then a whisper. But of course NATO is never going to let the Ukraine in because Russia truly considers all these countries they gave up to still be 100% theirs. So it is just two sides blustering hoping one will back down but all the while Ukrainians suffer. But if theWest did want to contain the Russians before gearing up for another cold war they might want to think about calling the bluff now while it would be much cheaper.
