DomKen -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 11:40:01 AM)

I make my living developing software. A lot is web apps deployed on linux webservers but a lot of my projects are still desktop apps for windows.

I got a new top end computer as a perk for signing a new contract. Vista runs great on a 3 grand box. My old XP development box got moved down to the testers who put Vista on it. That old box was a P4 2.4GHZ with 1 Gbyte of RAM. It was screaming fast running XP. Running Vista its a dog.

Vista was simply too ambitious. It made too big a step forward in hardware requirements and went too far in trying to prevent copyright violations. MS did this before with Win ME which they thankfully dumped in a hurry. They have a new version of the OS in development and that's where they should devote the big effort once they get Vista SP2 together.

But really, never ever upgrade an existing computer to a new version of Windows until after the first service pack comes out.

mrbob726 -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 11:44:45 AM)

I have 2 desktops, one with 98SE one with XP sp3 - 2 laptops, one with 98SE, one with XP SP3 - I need the 98 machines, because I have legacy (expensive) dos programs that require a dos window - that being said I've TRIED to assist some friends that have VISTA (I'm NOT a novice with these things called PC's), and as far as I'm concerned, Vista really sucks pond water big time. I'm experimenting with Ubuntu;  when I get it going, my next machine(s) will be Linux with dual boot to DOS  I expect eventually to leave windoze entirely. I might not, if microfuzz has the decency to admit they screwed up royally, apologizes to all the folks that have been loyal over the years, and stops the totally arrogant attitude toward their users. Linux (at least the Ubuntu version) would be fantastic for most casual users, The main problem for me at this point is trying to find drivers for my laptop lan networking and wireless.

edited for clarity and spelling

I might also add, that MAC is not an option for me - again, because of a lot of legacy programs.

edited for spelling, because the hurrier I work, the behinder I get [sm=weightlift.gif]

Oooo, another vista bashing thread, I just have to join in. I hate vista, I have it on this pc I am using, which incidently is my first modern computer after my old desktop which was just a collection of scrounged discarded parts running Win 98 SE. I thought getting a modern computer will make my pc usage that more enjoyable and hassle free after the problems I had with my old machine, constantly fixing those problems, but they always got fixed.

This thing, and it's daily reminders for new updates is getting on my nerves, it wants me to install SP1, but the last time I tried to install that, it messed the pc up, it took ages of searching the net for a cure to the problem, with the advice, only accept updates from HP, not microshaft. The help pages of Microshit were totally useless and I even thought arrogant.

Vista is so slow, it takes over a minute to boot up and shuttting down, sometimes two minutes of more. Also, maybe I am a bit concerned, but I do feel I am being spied on through this machine after reading about NSA having an input into the security software.

Then, the other bugbear, is none of my peripherals work with Vista and it was only this morning that I was surprised thatĀ  an oldĀ  XS drive image store actually worked with it, it had'nt, that would be the last straw. I am already searching for a legal copy of XP Pro.

I know, I should have bought a MAC, everyone I have talked to has said the same, microshaft has lost the plot. All it needs now is MAC to drop it's prices so those of us who can only afford entry level machines have the chance to switch over to pastures new.

Definately MAC next !!!

you can always buy a used Mac for good price. My ibook G4 still works great after 4 years.

edited to write that I also have a laptop with XP. Its more compatible with many applications and downloads but i enjoy the use of MAc way more. The ibook is way lighter to carry too!

I HATE VISTA!  I have had vista on my PC for about two years now.  It doesnt matter how many times I update, my pc is still screwing up because of it!  I am actually getting XP back from my father to put back on as my OS.  Then I will wait until they work out all the bugs on vista before I install it again.  Whenever I update my PC, the whole thing freezes.  I already had to create a new log in account TWICE for my husband.  I dont get it.  I update the whole PC as Im the administrator, but his log in and the guest account always trash out and have to be replaced.  UGH to vista.

Oh yeah I forgot, my PC was new, it was replaced by best buy, when I got it Vista was installed already.  No matter what I do to fix it, its still a disaster.  Whatever LOL.

marieToo -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 12:55:48 PM)

I've had Vista for about 3 weeks.

In the first couple of days there was an error message here or there and I thought surely I was going to go batshit over it, when the system wouldn't let me do what I was trying to do. With a little bit of patience I just had to figure out what it wanted me to do.  I played around a bit, clicked on this, clicked on that, read this, read that, then I kissed it's ass a little bit, conformed to it's way of thinking, and it's been running perfect for me ever since.  Kinda like a Dom in some ways.

My father works for a huge catholic university as a  one of their head networker/programers.  He deals with a huge network of over 100 pcs just in his office alone.  He hates Vista so much that the copy that the school gave him to install is sitting in his desk drawer.  At the moment he is refusing to change their OS to Vista.  No one is complaining...  Not even the bosses who gave it to him.

aftrshock -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 2:00:04 PM)

to Dolf:

Complaining that Mac is too expensive? Yeah, way too pricey I'll agree. But what'd your MCSE Cert cost you? Over $1000. And how useful is it today? USELESS!

And for you people worried about legacy; you can either dual-boot w/ BootCamp, or run what's called parallels; you can completely, 100% emulate a windows desktop in a Mac environment.

And to mrbob:

what you need is called ndiswrapper. Go into windows, pull up device properties of your wired/wireless hardware, and see which .inf file it uses. now go ahead and boot up an ubuntu live disc on whatever desktop / laptop, with windows install.

find that inf, and ndiswrapper (file.inf); it'll create the modules and load them for you. most of your hardware on any proprietary laptop or desktop should be covered. Also may want to consider giving Knoppix a try; best in hardware detection and installation, as far as the desktop linux variants are concerned.

as always, 'man' is about as useful as can be.

Lockit -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 2:34:43 PM)

I am just trying to keep my vista running until I can dump the problem.  Now the damn thing doesn't even want to recognize the os during boot and asks what to do.  How the hell do I know? lol  Just friggin start!  Every day it is something new... some new error, twenty questions to get one thing done, too much space taken up, this won't work, that won't work... oh you want to update three times a day... sure... remind me six times... thanks... what an irritation.  Then if it is an HP vista... hahaha on you!

Then I am told I can't delete it all and put on an XP os... trapped... unconsentual bondage to MS... and HP, both paddling my ass every day, while I pray for release.  Now it is rocket science to run a computer. I do believe in aliens now... I have a lil green monster with big eyes in there, I just know it.  But what good are the eyes if the friggin thing won't run?

My students when they write a paper on Microsoft word on vista, it wont open on an XP computer unless they format it to simple text. Its a pain.

Lockit -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 2:43:27 PM)

I took a cd to Kinko's to have things printed and faxed.  Their computer said it was all corrupted.  Kinko's doesn't work with vista anything, I was told. We tried opening documents in another format... do dice.  I finally took the writing program off and put on Word 2006.

Doesn't matter. I still run ME, on a very old machine, but the next time I buy a computer... I'm going back to Mac.

Wow! Me too!! I was starting to think I was the only person using ME! And when the next upgrade of the Macbook Pro is released, it's mine! :)

That's actually probably an issue with Office's new Open XML document formats, not Vista. On Windows you can install this compatibility pack to let older versions of Office open the new format. On Macs you can use this converter application. The newest versions of Office (2007 for Windows/2008 for Macs) use the Open XML format by default, but you can still choose to save documents as older formats if you need to. Hopefully those links will help restore your students' formatting for you.

Most people's MCSE cost them nothing. Their companies paid for it. I got mine in 1999 IIRC and have kept it up to date since. It was a requirement to get this job and we send all the junior coders to get it after they've been here a year. It is a very useful course and the cetificate is quite useful in getting work.

SilverWulf -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 7:41:08 PM)

<fr>

I bought a new laptop about a month ago, of course it came with Vista.

For the first few days I absolutely hated it and had an appointment set up with the store to wipe it and install XP the next time I was in town.

I played around with it some and learned the tricks it takes to keep it from freaking out on me, just like we all had to do with XP when it first came out.

I cancelled that appointment, I haven't had any problems at all once I figured a few things out.  There are quite a few things I like better compared to XP, as well as a few things that I've just had to learn to live with.

I think what it comes down to is this:

If you are buying a new computer that is built to run Vista and comes with Vista pre-installed, make sure it has enough resources to handle it and you will be ok after a short transition period.

If you are thinking about upgrading an existing computer from XP to Vista... DON'T DO IT.

Lockit -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 7:49:24 PM)

I got the first vista.  The second I hear is better.  But... at first it was a little strange, but I was happy with it.  The speed of my machine was great, I was happy... and then the hell began.  My machine should be able to handle the resources.  I did fairly well except certain things didn't work with vista, until the service pack, then shit just started happening and today I have to wonder if it will be working next month.  I believe that HP did things that made vista even more unstable and of course I bought HP.  That is two machines from them.  I will never buy HP again.  A Mac is looking better and better to me and I don't care how much it cost, it is worth getting rid of the MS headache.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/6/2008 8:05:02 PM)

Never touched Vista. I'm now using a server, with dual 3 ghz xeons, and 3 gigs of ram, raid scsi, and redundant power supplies, running windows server 2003. This computer has never crashed once ever. The power has gone out in the past, but it has never crashed. So, I can't complain about that, It's been well over a year, with this thing. So It's pretty stable.

I think servers are great, they are built better, server software is typically a lot more stable. I don't play games much so that doesn't matter, I don't even know if they'd run or not.

Anyway, I don't plan on ever upgrading to windows Vista, unless I just get it somehow, I won't even pirate it for a demo run, as I just don't need it. XP was a vast improvement though, as it added very good driver support. I trully hate installing drivers, so if I use windows on a desktop it'll be XP, as I don't care about nice looking backgrounds or sliding menus, I just turn all the extras off in XP even, with plain blue background.

Fast Reply:

I finally caught one of the new ads on television the other night.  It was definitely a "WTF?" moment that Firm and I shared.  Seems we're not alone and there appears to be many who are also wondering what the point of the ads are... other than to give Bill Gates another shot at demonstrating his comedic talent.

Well... in a moment of terrifying clarity, it just hit me what the point is...

With mystifying banter and pointless humor, they're confirming that Microsoft is a joke. [;)]

Lockit -> RE: It seems we're just unenlightened about Vista... (9/14/2008 11:47:48 AM)

Yeah and the joke is on us! lol  I saw that commercial too... people getting paid will say anything.
