Thadius -> The Green DNC shows their love of Old Glory... (9/6/2008 10:22:58 AM)

I guess the only things not worth recycling were the thousands of American flags brought out during the final show of support for Obama last week.

This picture is only part of the flags rescued from Invesco and the Pepsi center.  A worker and the local boy scout troop rescued these and many many others (somewhere in the neighborhood of 84 large bags full) from being sent to a landfill.

I sense a recurring theme here, pull out the flags when folks are watching (like a certain lapel pin that is now being worn all the time by a particular Senator), and then thrown away when the cameras are turned off and can no longer be used for propaganda.

I didn't include any links to the stories because they are blogs, however if one watches the news tonight I am pretty sure the story will be told in a unique way.  Oh and they are going to be reused.

What's the point here Thadius, some low level functionary blew it and didn't come up with a re-cycle plan for the flags. What conclusion is this leading you too...all those Democrats don't love America, they are socialist's...what should we make of this, please explain to me what you believe this means?

Thadius -> RE: The Green DNC shows their love of Old Glory... (9/6/2008 10:38:34 AM)

I think I explained it pretty clearly.  However in an attempt to make sure my point is not misunderstood.

Yes, they bragged about how green this convention was going to be.  Therefore, I think that there should have been a better recycling system in place.

Secondly, one would think that at least on some level of the campaign, folks would have an understanding of proper flag disposal.

Finally, it is clear that these issues were not important enough to implement, therefore I am jumping to the conclussion that it is just following a trend that has been constant in this campaign. I did not bring up the socialism or other claims.  It is funny that is the first thing that pops into your mind.

Just saying.
Thadius

This site outlines US codes related to the flag.
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/4/ch1.html

"American Legion Posts and local governments often have facilities to dispose of unserviceable flags."

http://www.usa-flag-site.org/etiquette.shtml
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"

Just sayin.

Burned? yes. Ceremoniously? no.

Vendaval -> RE: The Green DNC shows their love of Old Glory... (9/6/2008 11:06:53 AM)

About the flag not being allowed to touch the ground, would that apply in this situation?  And what is usually done with flags collected from convention floors?

It means that the DNC is so sloppy in their thinking, so careless in their patriotism, so clueless in their comprehension of the importance of symbols--in particular, the flag--that it never even occurred to them to contact Flag Keepers, the Boy Scouts of America, the Girl Scouts of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, or any military installation (such as Peterson Air Force Base or the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs), any one of whom would assist in proper disposal of the U.S. flags.  The Boy Scouts were already volunteering at the convention and the organizers did not ask them "can you take care of the flags when we're done?"

No, it doesn't make them socialist.  It makes them stupid.

Contrary to popular belief, a flag does not need to be destroyed because it has touched the ground or as the way the code is written...
quote:

Title 4, Chapter 1 ยง 8,
b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

This is a sign of disrespect of the flag, not a reason to destroy it.  Therefore if a flag is still properly presentable, it should be cleaned and salvaged if possible.

Vendaval -> RE: The Green DNC shows their love of Old Glory... (9/6/2008 11:32:13 AM)

Thank you for clarifying that point.  I checked the Cornell site and saw what you quoted, just not the specifics of what to do if the flag has touched the ground.

Good for the worker and the boy scouts for taking care these flags.   There should be a proper set of procedures in place for this situation at any political convention or rally, etc.

There is a political side to this...

Those flags have now been handed out by vets to those attending a political convention today.  I am glad that they were saved from rotting in a land fill and will now have homes.

Vendaval -> RE: The Green DNC shows their love of Old Glory... (9/6/2008 11:36:55 AM)

I am glad that these flags went to veterans.

I will agree this oversight was stupid if you will concede the leadeship exhibited by members of the GOP have been criminally stupid for the entirety of the Bush Administration.

Thanks for the link, Thadius. I don't know whether those flags actually came from the DNC convention or not, but the way most of them seem to be so carefully rolled, my gut reaction is that the clean-up crews probably dropped the ball on this one. I'm glad they're going to be washed and recycled though so others can enjoy them.

Thadius -> RE: The Green DNC shows their love of Old Glory... (9/6/2008 12:08:22 PM)

In all fairness the DNC is now stating that these flags were stolen from the premises, and suggesting that they were going to be sent back to the manufacturer...

Just felt that I should present the other side of this.

The pictures I presented were the after clean-up shots...

Here is just one picture of how they were found.... http://hillbuzz.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/bo-flags2.jpg?w=484&h=356

The devil is in the details.  The sad part of this is not so much the "political statement" that could be built from this, but that no one in DNC seems to have given it much thought, including the gentleman who wishes to be the next president of the country this flag is supposed to represent.
