McCain, Obama plan joint stop at Ground ZeroThe Associated Press
Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama said Saturday they will put aside partisan politics for a joint appearance at Ground Zero to mark the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

A showing of class on both sides......

Agreed.  Both men made the right decision here.  Kudos to both.

Mark,

Call me a cynic.  I don't see this as a political thing that we can all agree on.  This is an American thing we can all agree on.

It is a good gesture by both men and their campaigns.

Simply an American,
Thadius

They'll make a wonderful showing of putting the BS aside...

But I assure you that the talking heads on the 24 hour news networks will make as much political hay out of it as they can, one way or another.  :(

MSNBC: "McCain visits the spot where 3000+ Americans died thanks to republican stupidity...."

FOX: "Those democrats! Using 9-11 as a means of scoring political points, and attempting to take credit for the Bush administration keeping us all safe from further attacks..."

CNN:  blah, blah blah... (with scrolls on every edge of the screen.)

Yeah, sometimes you just don't need to be friggin psychic, to see what's coming.

Call me a cynic, but I see it as a no brainer. It would be political suicide for either of them to ignore it.

I am not doubting anyones sincerity on this. I am sure both men, like most, if not all of us has strong feelings.

I just expect platitudes and empty flag waving. I am tired of having my "Patriotic american" chain pulled.

I am sure there will be plenty of flags waving and plenty of platitudes.

I choose to take such gestures as they are offered, as tokens of respect from the living to the dead.  Over 3,000 people died on 9/11.  For the families and friends left behind, that day can never be the same.  Acknowledging the tragedy of that day isn't just a patriotic or political thing to do; it is the decent thing to do.

When patriotism and smart politics converge with simple decency, I choose to celebrate the decency over the patriotism and the politics.

That's me.

This just isn't going to play well for Obama.  I'm picturing editorial cartoons of them in some moving joint photo op, with thought ballons of McCain thinking "Never again," and Obama thinking "We had it coming."

The Jeremiah Wright videos are only a Google away.

I hope you're wrong.

That would not be the decent thing to do.

There are plenty of opportunities to flay Obama for his beknighted view of America.  9/11 does not need to be a part of that.

Right now there are 4152 confirmed deaths of US soldiers in Iraq that President Bush and his co-horts are directly responsible for. All in the name of terrorism and 9/11. Not to mention Iraqi deaths. All based upon a lie.

I really don't feel like celebrating or flag waving.

Me either. Not until 1/20/2009 and it cannot come soon enough not can it undo the damage done by the regime of Bush.

I really welcomed this thread because of the very personal hurt 9/11 inflicted on friends and co-workers. It is truly a good thing that the two men running against each other mark this important day by putting aside their battle for a moment to honor those men and woman who died in the towers as well as those fireman, policeman, EMT, Port Authority and others that gave their lives trying to help neighbors.

There is no R or D next to the names of those that died.  They will not be remembered for their party affliations,
if any, but remembered as fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors, each a member of our extended American family taken from us by evil men bent on the destructionof our country, our culture, or principles, our way of life.

I think it is a shame that even in this thread the hatred for Bush from some knows no bounds.  Their must be
dozens of other places to say your piece..this was an opportunity for a momentary "peace" among those of us
with different political views.  Bottom line, we are all Americans who love our country.  With all its faults and
imperfections people from around the world still come here in droves to find a better life for their families.

God Bless America...and it's people, even if some of us might not believe in Him.

And I have lost 2 in Iraq. The dead of Sept. 11th do not have a greater moral weight than others.

And the use of those dead for political gain OR  to further a political agenda is criminal

No, I do not.  Turning the deaths of 3,000 innocent people into political fodder turns my stomach.

By any measure of civilized behavior, 9/11 was an act of pure unadulterated evil.  There is no policy point to be advanced, no strategy to be discussed, that requires yet another fruitless exercise in quantifying and qualifying that evil.

The policy point of relevance, the strategy of importance, is what does the United States do to safeguard against the return of such an evil.  Obama and McCain need to debate the future, not the past.
