Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of the assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto who has little experience in governing, was elected president of Pakistan on Saturday by a wide margin. Zardari, 53, who spent 11 years in jail on corruption charges that remain unproved, succeeds Pervez Musharraf, who resigned last month under the threat of impeachment. He is expected to be sworn in on Monday or Tuesday, Pakistani officials said. Zardari has the tacit approval of the United States, which views him as an ally in the campaign against terrorism. He has promised a tougher fight against members of the Taliban and Al Qaeda ensconced in the nation's tribal areas, from where they mount assaults on American and NATO troops fighting in Afghanistan. http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/09/06/asia/07pstan.php CBS just made mention that his nickname is "Mr Ten Percent", due to the amount he skimmed from various sources. quote:
LAVONIA, Ga. - The windowless building that once housed the town's only strip club sits empty in the middle of a sprawling gravel parking lot, made all the uglier by the scars from its final party. This summer, a mob led by the mayor tore down gaudy billboards advertising topless dancers, put plywood over glass doors bearing a nude silhouette and purged the awnings proclaiming the incendiary name of the club — Cafe Risque — in a diesel-fueled bonfire. Now Mayor Ralph Owens stands at the place where XXX once marked the spot, his grin widening as he takes out a set of jingling keys from his blue jeans. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26564297/?GT1=43001 quote:
CHICAGO - The Rev. Jesse Jackson has been released from a Chicago hospital, two days after he was admitted for severe stomach pains. A spokeswoman for Jackson's civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, says Jackson was released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital shortly before noon on Friday. Jackson underwent a series of tests that determined he was suffering from viral gastroenteritis — an infection caused by a number of viruses. His office later said he had been stricken by food poisoning and was severely dehydrated. Rainbow/PUSH spokeswoman LaToya Porter says the 66-year-old Jackson was feeling much better and that he was planning to attend a Rainbow/PUSH event Saturday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26563264/ Was Obama spotted anywhere near the restaurant? quote:
WASHINGTON - The long and divisive war in Iraq is about to resonate with presidential candidates in a way not seen so far in the campaign: The sons of both vice presidential nominees are assigned to go there soon. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's eldest son, Track, will perform security duties for his brigade's top officers. "He's just like any other infantry soldier here," said Army Col. Burt Thompson, who heads the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. "He tries to remain as anonymous as he possibly can." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26566312/ Good luck to them both. quote:
TORONTO - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper plans to dissolve Parliament on Sunday and call early elections in hopes of strengthening his minority government's hold on power. Harper's Conservatives need to win 28 more seats to have a majority in Parliament, and although he has played down that possibility, polls in recent days indicate the right-of-center party has a chance to do so. Dimitri Soudas, a spokesman for the prime minister, announced Harper's plans Friday, saying voting would be held Oct. 14. It will be Canada's third national ballot in four years. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26566013/ Wild ass Canadians.... quote:
MOSCOW - President Dmitry Medvedev said Saturday the war with Georgia has shown the world that "Russia is a nation to be reckoned with" — his most aggressive comments to date on the conflict with Russia's southern neighbor. Medvedev said the fighting in August was forced upon Russia and insisted that Russia had to act to save lives. He spoke at the opening of State Council, a high-level government body made up of governors and others. "Russia will never allow anyone to infringe upon the lives and dignity of its citizens. Russia is a nation to be reckoned with from now on," Medvedev said. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26572450/ How reassuring.... quote:
LOS ANGELES - To mark Playboy's 55th anniversary in January, the magazine has approached Lindsay Lohan about doing a nude pictorial, Access Hollywood has confirmed. But it appears even an offer of $700,000 couldn’t persuade the actress to bare her breasts. And while Lohan has been photographed sans top before — in last year’s tribute to Marilyn Monroe in New York magazine — she is now done posing for naked pictures. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26562509/ I'll take my shirt off for $700 grand.....
