Hi folks--

David Frum (not a liberal) has an article in the NYTimes Magazine ("The Vanishing Republican Voter"), writing about income inequality and its threat to the GOP.  It's quite interesting, not something I've come across before, and this ain't a Democrat talking.  I'd be interested in hearing what other folks think of Frum's thesis.

This seems to make some sense, Thorn:

quote:

As a general rule, the more unequal a place is, the more Democratic; the more equal, the more Republican.

It's human nature to feel anger at a real (or perceived) slight, and that's how many take the income discrepancy. "I can barely afford ravioli, while Biff Dickhead over there is paying $500 for a haircut". And whether they come through or not, the Democrats posistion themselves as the best possible agents of change, regarding those sorts of things.

Surely the income differential depends on where someone is in society and saying supporters of one party appear to have less pay differentials than another is irrelvent.

By the way, Republicans have been in power the last eight years so if they were concerned about the problem, you think they would ahve done something about it.

wages stagnated around 1981.  not 2000. at least for most of the US.

as long as god plays such a vital role in US politics I doubt this article amounts to much.

"they:" use the old testament to map out an armagedden and 1000 years of peice.

god has a plan and we are part of it.

as to my personal feeling. I wish they would not speed up the end of time.

"As a general rule, the more unequal a place is, the more Democratic; the more equal, the more Republican."

I really have a hard time agreeing with what he has to say.  I live in Idaho, which for many years has been known as THE most Republican state.  Here we have the most millionairs per capita (27 per 1000) of any state. http://theboard.byu.edu/index.php?area=posts&date=2004.05.19&archives=1 and yet we rank 41 in over all per capita income. http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/regional/spi/spi_newsrelease.htm

According to what Frum wrote Idaho should be a VERY Democratic state with that kind of income discrepancy, but instead it is the most Republican state.

Good observation Igor, I'm impressed.

I was rubbing elbows almost daily with JR just before his accident at the Tostidos Bowl and, while he had so much more money than I ever will, I didn't dislike him in any way. He was a real likable fellow!
