The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday, September 7, shows the race for the White House is tied.

What caught my eye was the breakdown of each candidate's support:
quote:

McCain earns the vote from 89% of Republicans while Obama is supported by 81% of Democrats. McCain also manages to attract 15% of Democrats while Obama gets 9% of the Republican vote. Voters not affiliated with either major party remain fairly evenly divided between the two men.

Seems like McCain has more of his base firmly in hand than Obama, has more of Obama's base on his side than Obama has of McCain's base, with the independents equally split.

That can't be good news for Obama.....

McCain is ahead according to gallop, but polls are polls.  At least it's all still competitive, though.  I'm glad McCain got a decent bump from the convention.

This still isn't a total containing numbers after the completion of the convention.. so tomorrow and Tuesday will be more telling.

Gallup has McCain up by 3.. http://www.gallup.com/poll/110050/Gallup-Daily-McCain-Moves-Ahead-48-45.aspx

Tomorrow's report will be the first in which all interviews were conducted after the conclusion of the convention.

And pollsters say the bounce isnt over yet until Tuesday or Wednesday. So likely McCain will hit 50%.

What's interesting is the Rasmussen poll shows people have a more favorable opinion of BOTH Palin and McCain than Obama. 58% of voters says they have a favorable opinion of both McCain and Palin. While 56% have a favorable opinion of Obama. Biden is the least liked and has a 48% favorability.

Polls also show he is losing religious people, especially catholics, in droves. I wonder if the Palin pick may have pulled a bunch of those away from him. Also Nancy Pelosi's comments about abortion and the church may have spooked some voters. Pelosi is a catholic, and she was asked about her ideas on abortion, and she made a claim that the church has gone back and forth on the issue and there is no consensus within the catholic church. And after that comment the church just came right down on top of her and put out all sorts of statements that she is incorrect and that the church has always maintained a stance against abortion. blah, blah blah... And that may have hurt Obama somewhat with moderate-religious voters.
She could have just said, "That is one thing I disagree with my church with..." and left it at that...simple.

Biden may have been a mistake. He brings some foreign policy experience to the ticket....but other than that....nothing. And what would have really been a sure win....a Hillary/Obama ticket with Hillary on top. It would have been a landslide. But the far-left and the George Soros types didnt think Hillary was far enough to the left. After all, she supported the Iraq war. So they knocked her off and put this unknown on the top of the ticket with no experience and a bunch of friends who either preach hatred in church (Wright, Pflager) or end up in jail (Rezko, Kilpatrick). THAT is why the Dems are losing now.

Sarah Palin on the other hand may have been a hail mary thrown by John McCain, but Palin caught the pass in the end zone. The difference in excitement of the Republican party between 2 weeks ago and today is enormous. That party is now excited, united, and they fully believe they can win. And that has blindsided the Democrats. They have yet to recover from it. And now that excitement is starting to show in the polls.

I think the reasoning behind bringing Biden on was more than the foreign policy issues, I think Obama figured it would help him in the Catholic community and in PA.  Just look at the first week, how many times Scranton and Catholic were mentioned by both of them.

I caught an interview with Geraldine Ferraro the other night, she was asked what advice she would give to Palin.  Her response was basicly, what can I tell her, she is a Gov with an over 80% approval rating, she knows what she is doing, however I would advise Sen Biden to look at the tapes, lots of them, because this woman is good, and he is going to need to be prepared for her in the debate.

This election is going to be a very interesting one to watch... I can only imagine what the Oct surprise is going to be.

As I hear it, Thad, the DNC wasn't the first time Michelle Obama has stood up and worked an audience.  Why do you think he got out the 'family is off limits' statement so quickly?

I have had the pleasure of hearing her speak, in a non DNC environment...  Let's just say that the college writings of hers that have disappeared, are very much in agreement with her positions.

However, it is not my job to bring that stuff up.

Floating Biden's name for a cabinet position, maybe?  Or would that be too tacky?

Would not be surprised if, come October, we start hearing rumors about Lieberman being tapped for Secretary of State.  That would increase McCain's crossover appeal to Democrats.

What Dems are you speaking of? The ones in my local chapter despise Leiberman and we refer to him as the new Zell Miller.

Lieberman has no appeal to any Democrat I know. The GOP is welcome to the liar.

HARTFORD, Conn. --U.S. Sen. Barack Obama rallied Connecticut Democrats at their annual dinner Thursday night, throwing his support behind mentor and Senate colleague Joe Lieberman.

"The fact of the matter is, I know some in the party have differences with Joe. I'm going to go ahead and say it," Obama told the 1,700-plus party members who gathered in a ballroom at the Connecticut Convention Center for the $175-per-head fundraiser.
"I am absolutely certain Connecticut is going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the U.S. Senate so he can continue to serve on our behalf," he said

I am starting to notice a trend...

Those of a similar frame of mind as the 15% of Democrats planning to vote for McCain in November.

I wonder if that will grow to 20% or more by November?

Nah, it will probably be in the 10-15% range.  Some die hards would vote for a scarecrow if it was put on either of the major party tickets.

I havnt seen them, but someone on the radio said that they found some video of Palin's debates when she ran for governor in 2006 and said that she's no push-over. Biden is going to have his hands full. She knows her stuff...especially on energy and oil. Biden is not going to get away with the many misconceptions Democrats make about oil and energy independence. Remember also that she not only beat the Democrat she was running against in Alaksa, but she also beat out the incumbant Republican.

They also say she's been reading newspapers every day since she was a young teen. So she isnt clueless about the world or about history. She isnt going to be like Obama and say we should invade Pakistan. It's not going to be very difficult to get her up to speed on foreign policy. I'm sure the McCain campaign already has foreign policy experts giving her a crash course.

It should be a good debate.

That's a shame, Ken.  Reminds me of the story of the woman who couldn't believe Nixon won because she didn't know anybody who voted for him.  Joe has been a solid voice for liberal causes for a long time, but because he steps off the reservation for what he believes is the good of the country, he becomes a pariah.  Dissent will not be tolerated, huh?

True.  That's why I was surprised that Rasmussen had McCain's crossover vote as high as it did.  It's not a huge figure overall, but just after the conventions it is higher than I would anticipate.

Foxnews is running a special on her again tonight... it answers alot of the questions about the woman, and gives some good background (including a snip from one of those debates).

In my opinion worth catching.

A solid voice for liberal causes playing puppetmaster in McCain's ear? Yeah, like DomKen said, we don't want him, thanks.
