You think shepherds are calm??? Goodness I'm envious my mom has a 70lb obsessive ball of energy.

I have two babies.

Taylor an australian cattle dog. He's full of nervous energy. Very loyal and protective and would guard me within an inch of his life and has protected me when the need arose. He's very talkative, very smart, and he does wonderful in training. I need to spend at least an hour a day of alone time with him. He is the dominant alpha dog.

Daisy who is a beagle jack russell mix. She's this little tiny dog very submissive nut. She has this HUGE bark and she is extremely spoiled. She's crazy smart, but the terrier in her is extremely stubborn. She is the problem child of the family.

They do a million funny little things and all I can do is get pictures of what I can.

wolfy.  bordercollie husky mix, black and white treasure.  he thought mama was DA BOMB and was such a pistol...he wasnt allowed in the bedroom cause wolf has allergies.  he'd sit at the doorway and sliiiiiide one paw in...then the other... "wolfy, what are you doing?"  and he'd pull them back like "um, nothing!" and grin that doggie grin.  he's been gone some 6 years now.

kiara was the black german shepherd.  absolutely gorgeous featherbrain.  [:D]  she would follow commands...till she saw a kitty.  then it was "OOoooo i much catch it and kiss it and slobber all over it and love it and love it!"  unfortunately kitties tend to run when they see a HUGE black blur flying towards them with the mouth open and tongue hanging out!  we found her another home when we moved into an apartment.  see, big dogs are wonderful when they're helpful.  when they're dragging you across the yard on your belly cause they saw a kitty....not so wonderful.  she's happy now though.

Thunder...... 137lb male Akita.  He'll be 12 in November and still acts like a puppy.

He would follow me to hell and back.  He hates being a part from me.  He is the sweetest dog in the world, but threaten me or his family and it's game on baby.

Camey..... 120lb female Akita.  She passed away two years ago at 12 years of age.  She took a chunk of my heart with her that won't be returned until we are reunited.  She was the bestest friend I ever had.  She taught me about the breed, about loyalty and about having a major sense of humor when training, and living with an Akita.

I could write volumes of stories that would make you giggle, but my eyes are full of tears just talking about her, and thinking of how much I love her and my Thunder.

I couldn't have human children, so God blessed me with the best canine children in the world.

And yes, this breed is a reflection of me in so many ways it's sometimes scary.

To those that have lost dogs or suffered along with a dying dog,my heart goes out to you. It`s the down side to having such good buddies.

Had the world's sweetest goleden retriever. Lost her two years ago and still miss her terribly.
Beyond that, we're on our second Quarterhorse. The first one couldn't show anymore so he went to a therapeutic riding facility where he was their best horse from his first day there. His arthritis and ringbone caught up to him alas, so now he's in full retirement. He doesn't get ridden but still has kids with needs flocking to groom and feed him treats. He's a really smart horse, and can tell when a kid can do things by themselves and when they need him to cover for them.

Whaaaaaa LaT, that is soooooooo funny!

My dog is amazing. I rescued her off the street in Manhattan at 3 months old, she was born in Harlem with an extremely bad start. She was crazy skittish. I have had her 11 years and now she is very relaxed and loves Canada and the winter. She helps me deal with just about everything including winter. She is indescribably amazing. She, oh my Lucy, is so the best!

I saw the singer/songwriter Ben Harper being interviewed and he said something like, "Life is a series of good dogs."

My sister lives close by with a cat two dogs, and her daughter who lives there has a little one. It is great to get all the dogs in the car and go some nice place with grass, trees and water and have a real doggy time. I love it.

Vendaval -> RE: Canine companions (9/9/2008 1:57:04 AM)

He mellowed out after age 2  more or less.  Those puppy and first years were very challenging; little pieces of garden hose everywhere and plenty of holes dug for hiding bones or laying in the dirt when it was hot.

Heart, I just wanted to thank you for that quote and Vend, for this thread. I agree "life is a series of good dogs" At least it has been for me. I've had them most of my life and cannot imagine what some of the rough times would have been like without them.

Molly, the neurotic black lab that loved so unconditionally, especially my son when he needed her most. She mothered everything small and helpless and would defend her home ferociously. (just run like the hounds of hell were after her with a loud noise or thunderstorm) That was why she was at the shelter, gunshy hunting dog. She had to be put down because of diabetis complications.
Boxcar, the lovable stray that wandered into our lives so mysteriously then back out just as mysteriously so many years ago.
Duffy the little white ball of fluff Bichon Friese that I was conned into taking and broke all of our hearts when she refused to believe that she had boundaries and that Hwy 92 was not within them.
Bella, the shepherd setter mix, my most special beautiful girl that took such a huge chunk of my heart with her. She was a puppy when I brought her home from the shelter. Much of our house had her toothmarks on it before she grew up. Everyone that ever met her fell in love with her. She did so much for me, went to work with me, was beside me through some of my most hellish life moments. She taught 2 small children and their mother, that all big dogs are not scary and mean, after they suffered years of terror because of a dog attack. I was devastated when she died of a sudden massive stroke, only consoled by the fact that she had had the best doggie life possible and died without suffering any old age ailments.
And Rusty, the irrepressable goofball overgrown red hairball, golden retriever, that won his discharge from the shelter with his sad eyes. He was huge, even by golden retreiver standards. He came to us in his middle years, as have many of our dogs (most all rescues). He was an angel with the grands when they were little. They would crawl all over him, stand on him to look out the windows. Stick their fingers in his mouth, ears and eyes. He loved it and layed there with them when Bella would run to escape on the middle of my bed. We lost him to cancer.

These were the dogs of my adult years, Others in my childhood that are less vibrant a memory yet still so important in forming my love for the animals.

I am blessed to share my home with Natasha; a seven year old Schipperke mix which I inherited when a dear friend of mine passed on a few months ago. She helped my friend through some of the most difficult periods of her life and like a four-legged angel she is now helping me get over losing my best friend.

Vendaval -> RE: Canine companions (9/10/2008 5:24:12 PM)

You are most welcome, La Tigresse.  Most of my pets have been rescues and strays too.  Their love and loyalty are beyond price.  [:)]
